The maker of the video game Fortnite is being sued by two parents in Canada who claim the game is as addictive as cocaine. The parents are claiming software development company Epic Games used psychologists to design "the most addictive game possible."Fortnite is one of the most popular games among kids. Eight-year-old Rayline Brassert and her friends are hooked“People always brag about Fortnite,” said Rayline. “Like when they always come to school and brag about it.”Rayline’s mother says it can be a challenge to get her daughter to stop playing. “There’s like this switch that goes off and if she’s not allowed to do something and she’s a completely different person and you gotta pull her back to reality,” said Natalie Brassert.Fifteen-year-old Gavin Probst says he plays Fortnite nearly every day and admits he can spend a little too much time in front of the screen. “It’s real easy to lose time. I’ve personally gone overboard many times,” said Gavin. His mother, Christine, also notices a change in her son when he starts playing the game. “You can just sort of tell their attitudes get a little bit more short, they can be a little bit more cranky,” said Christine. Dr. Russell Schilling with the American Psychological Association has worked with game developers but wasn’t involved with Fortnite. “They’re creative people and whether psychologists are involved or not, what they’re trying to do is make the game as engaging as possible,” said Dr. Schilling. “They want you to play it, they wouldn’t make money if they weren’t.”Schilling feels there’s not enough research to show video games are addictive, even though the World Health Organization made video game addiction an official mental health disorder.“Many things can become addictive,” said Schilling. “There are many factors for why that may happen but there may not be anything specifically about video games that’s unique – we just don’t know at this point.”As for the lawsuit, Epic Games won’t comment on pending litigation but Fortnite has nearly 250 million users worldwide. 2067

However, home and refinance loan programs targeted towards military veterans can be a benefit or a headache, depending on the lender. John Bell, advisor for the Veterans Affairs Administration in D.C. says there are many reasons why vets can take advantage of borrowing cash against their home. But how you choose a cash-out lender makes a big difference. “We want to make sure that veterans are armed with information from the disclosure process early in the process as well as though closing, so they understand the decisions they're making,” he says. Bell says, unfortunately, there are predatory lenders out there targeting vets, sticking vets with thousands of dollars in hidden fees. “Have we seen it, yes,” Bell explains. “Do we know how to combat it and help you in navigating that process? Without a doubt.” In 2018, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs stepped up its regulations for lenders, specifically on cash-out refinance loans. The VA has always offered advisor services to protect borrowers through their long-standing VA home loan program. “We need to make sure that all lenders are operating on the same playing field, that they're all giving veterans the transparency that they need to make informed decisions,” Bell says. According to a report by the American Enterprise Institute, in September of 2018, veterans cashed in on cash-outs. They accounted for 86 percent of mortgage loans, which was up about 30 percent from two years prior. “The general rule is if it sounds too good to be true it usually is,” Bell says. The Humane Society of the United States went undercover, investigating animal testing at one of the largest contract research organizations in the world. Officials found dozens of beagles and hounds that were force-fed fungicides to test a new pesticide product at a lab in Michigan.The undercover video is hard to watch. "In some cases, the animals are forced to ingest substances either by putting a gel capsule down their throats or with a tube,” Kathleen Conlee, vice president of Animal Research Issues at the Humane Society of the United States, can be heard saying in the undercover video. For some, it’s hard to fathom. However, Conlee says this kind of animal testing happens more often than we think. "There are about 60,000 dogs at about 350 facilities in the United States right now, and I think the public is very shocked to learn that it's at that scale,” Conlee says. And that's just dogs. Conlee explains when you factor in all animals, the number being used for testing is closer to 25 million per year. "That's warm-blooded animals that doesn't include fish, reptiles, amphibians," she explains. In this case out of Michigan, 36 beagles were being used to test pesticides for a company called Dow Chemical Company. It’s a practice that is not against the law. "The company is doing legal activities,” Conlee says. “Nothing illegal was happening." Often times, Conlee says federal agencies like the FDA and EPA request animal tests to approve products or provide funding for experiments. Most recently, the U.S.D.A. was under fire by a separate animal watchdog group for alleged "kitten cannibalism,” where they report experiments involving feeding kittens to dogs. The federal judge overseeing the case against Jeffrey Epstein on Wednesday ordered a hearing to discuss prosecutors' effort to dismiss the indictment against the alleged sex trafficker in the wake of his death.In a court filing, US District Court Judge Richard Berman said he believed the August 27 hearing would help shed light on the conclusion of the case against Epstein.
