LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A FedEx plane had to make an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).The airport says FedEx Flight 1026, a Boeing 7677-300, landed safely after declaring an emergency Wednesday morning.The Los Angeles Fire Department transported one of the pilots to the hospital with a non-life threatening leg injury that was sustained during the evacuation of the plane.LAX says the aircraft wasn’t carrying any passengers.KNBC and KTTV report that the plane was arriving in California from Newark, New Jersey, and landed at about 5 p.m.According to KTTV, the pilots of the plane reported a problem with the landing gear before the aircraft landed and slid on its underside. 715

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wilford Brimley, who worked his way up from stunt performer to star of films such as “Cocoon” and “The Natural,” has died. He was 85. Brimley’s manager says the actor died Saturday morning in a Utah hospital. She says he was on dialysis and had several medical ailments. The mustached Brimley was a familiar face for a number of roles, often playing gruff characters like his grizzled baseball manager in “The Natural.” Brimley’s best-known work was in “Cocoon,” in which he was part of a group of seniors who discover an alien pod that rejuvenates them. Brimley was also recognizable to many as a longtime pitchman for Quaker Oats and medical supplier Liberty Medical. 696

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California growers are frustrated by an unusually wet spring that has delayed the planting of crops like rice and damaged others including strawberries and wine grapes.Rice grower Kurt Richter said Tuesday that storms forced him to wait weeks to start seeding his land in Colusa County. And rice that he managed to get into the ground is in a "refrigerated state" because of colder than usual temperatures that threaten to reduce yields.Watsonville strawberry farmer Peter Navarro tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that recent wet weather is disrupting his picking schedule and causing a loss of production.Much of California has seen two to five times more precipitation than is normal for this point in May. LONDON — Trucks waiting to get out of Britain are backing up for miles and people are stranded at airports as many countries impose stringent travel restrictions over concerns about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily. A growing number of countries are halting air travel from the U.K., including Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, and others are considering restrictions, like Sweden, South Africa and Hong Kong. Meanwhile France has banned trucks from the country for a period of 48 hours while the new variant is assessed. British Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the strain is “out of control” around London and southeastern England — but experts have urged caution, saying it’s not clear if it’s more lethal. In an urgent message Saturday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson closed all non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, and pools, and told his country they would have to rethink their holiday plans. He said the new strain appears to be 70% more transmissible than existing strains, and British experts believe this strain is causing the explosive surge in cases in the UK. However, he added "there's no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective.The World Health Organization and health experts from around the world are researching the new strain, and working to identify what makes it different. On Sunday, COVID-19 testing czar Admiral Brett Giroir told ABC's "This Week" that he doesn't believe a travel ban is necessary at this time. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Hawthorne-based SpaceX launched a NASA ocean-monitoring satellite into orbit today from Vandenberg Air Force Base in central California. Residents in parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties could hear a series of sonic booms following liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket. Farther south in Los Angeles County, residents might have caught a glimpse of the rocket's smoky trail as it powered the satellite into orbit, then reversed course and returned to Vandenberg for recovery and use in future missions.The launch was scheduled for 9:17 a.m., and SpaceX tweeted a video showing the successful liftoff at 9:19 a.m.At 9:28 a.m., the company tweeted that ``Falcon 9's first stage has landed on Landing Zone 4,'' and deployment of Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich was confirmed at 10:18 a.m.The rocket carries NASA's Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite, which will join a nearly 30-year project to measure global sea-surface height, while also providing atmospheric data that officials say will improve weather forecasts, climate modeling and hurricane tracking.
