While many hair salon and gym owners across the country understood why they had to shut down during the pandemic, those closures created a financial hardship. A hardship that some are finding difficult to overcome."Economically, it's been devastating to us. We opened up our gym three years ago and sort of like a little miracle. We took over an existing gym that was probably not fitting the community. We came in there with our life savings, we opened up this beautiful gym and we were becoming very successful," said John Pena, the owner of GYM NYC in New York City.Pena says their business was shut down for nearly six months. Now, he's finally excited to reopen. Pena applied for and received money from the Paycheck Protection Program but it only did so much. "There is no income coming in from the business, obviously. The extra 0 on the unemployment has really been a big help but that’s going away. I’ve been able to pay my bills and that's it," said Pena. Pena and other gym owners in New York are hoping for more government help for small businesses to help them get back on their feet."In general, I think there is a set of overhead expenses that I’m sure owners in any industry would tell you play a huge factor. With many conferences scrapping fall sports, the NCAA announced that it will postpone all fall Division I championships for 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.The decision does not impact the College Football Playoff, although the future of that competition is in question. The announcement, however, impacts athletes from other sports including soccer and women’s volleyball.NCAA President Mark Emmert said that college championships cannot be held as long as 50% of conferences are not participating.Emmert said that his staff has been already looking at ways of ensuring college athletics can move forward with winter and spring sports. Emmert said the NCAA should make it a priority to ensure winter and spring championships in 2021 are played given that the NCAA had to cancel all winter and spring championships in 2020.“I am confident we can do it,” he said. 873

While traveling with his parents on route to Virginia from New Jersey, James Murray made an attempt to get on I-95 and make a smooth sailing trip to his destination.But, Maryland's weather and high winds had other plans."The rain was okay, and getting out of New Jersey was fine, but then we got into and crossed over Maryland and they closed I-95 down, it was crazy," said Murray.In a Facebook Live, Murray goes into detail about his tense situation.Murray says he recalls the traffic being stand still and officials forcing all the vehicles off of the interstate into a little town called Port Deposit.It was starting to hit the late hours of midnight and Murray's parents, who were also in the vehicle, began to feel worried that they wouldn't be able to find their way. With no hotels and no opened restaurants in the area, they all started to feel concerned while driving through the unknown town for hours.That's when Murray saw an opened restaurant called Jumbo Jimmy's and immediately pulled into the parking lot to enter the restaurant. He was then greeted by a woman behind the counter who told him that the restaurant's kitchen was closed. After the woman took a second glimpse at Murray and recognized who he was, she immediately told him that they'll be more than happy to open the kitchen to serve him."The people were so lovely, so lovely in this place, not just the people that worked there, but the patrons were so nice and friendly, and they treated my parents like a million bucks." Murray also goes on to share that many people in the restaurant extended their generosity and were willing to open their homes to him and his parents. But there's a possible health risk airline crew members call a stinky little secret.Crew members work to keep passengers safe and comfortable when flying but there's a secret they want you to know about in the cabin air. Flight attendants and pilots call it the "dirty sock smell."One flight attendant, who was granted anonymity for this story for fear of losing his job, says that smell sent him to the emergency room last summer."(The) smell kept getting intense, intense. (I) started to get light-headed, wanting to throw up," "Andrew" said. "For almost 15 minutes the smell just kept getting stronger and it didn't go away. That's when I felt extremely sick, light-headed and was hard to breathe."He wasn't the only one with a serious reaction.   "My other flight attendant next to me asked, 'Is that the smell that everyone's been talking about?' Everyone called it the 'dirty sock smell,'" the flight attendant said.According to industry insiders, the source of that foul stench comes from how airplanes are designed. Air in airplane cabins comes from "bleed air" — air that begins as fresh air outside that enters the jet engine. After entering the engine, some of that air "bleeds" off, mixed in with recycled cabin air and then is pumped back into the cabin.When a gasket leaks inside the jet engine, fumes from hydraulic fluids, oils or de-icing agents can enter the cabin.Julie Anderson, a representative from flight attendant union Association of Flight Attendants, says some of the oils that enter the cabin contain neurotoxic additives."Engine oil fumes contain a very complex mixture of chemicals that can include carbon monoxide," Anderson said. She added that the "dirty sock smell" can lead to hypoxia, headache, dizziness, feeling faint, confusion and even incapacitation."That's obviously an issue for flight safety and security," she said.When Andrew's plane landed and the flight attendants' symptoms persisted, they were sent to the emergency room."They said I had a high level of carbon monoxide detected in my blood," he said. Anderson says the industry has known about the problem since the 1950's and she says the solution is elementary. "My 11-year-old can recognize that it doesn't make sense to compress air in an engine that can leak oil, and feed that air to people in an enclosed space, without putting a filter on board," she said. As simple as that sounds, the stink about dirty sock smell is wafting into the courtroom. In an ongoing lawsuit, a group of flight attendants is suing Boeing, claiming their health suffered from a fume event on an Alaska Airlines flight. Boeing declined a request for an interview but issued a statement, saying that "Boeing has not changed its position that cabin air is safe to breathe."
