BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao said on Tuesday that China supported the Caribbean integration process.     "China will strengthen dialogue with the Caribbean community based on mutual respect, reciprocity and equality to promote south-south cooperation and achieve common prosperity," said Wen. He also said that Barbados supported the Beijing Olympic Games and China's participation in the Inter-American Development Bank.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- A high-profile meeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC) ended on Sunday by concluding that the overall situation of the country's economy was good and the dynamic of economic growth remained unchanged.     "The country's overall economic situation is good. The economy is growing quickly and the financial sector is operating steadily. The basic momentum of the country's economy remains unchanged," said a communique released at the close of the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee. "The most important thing is to do well in the country's own business.     "We should make flexible and careful macro-economic policies. We should step up efforts to boost domestic demand, particularly domestic consumption and keep the economy, the financial sector and the capital market stable.     "We should continue keeping social stability and pushing the country's economy towards sound and fast development," it said.     The meeting also came at a time when the outlook of the world economy became increasingly grim as a result of a serious global financial crisis.     This meeting was significant because it was the third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee 30 years ago that pushed the country on to the road of its historic reform and opening-up drive.

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Monday hailed the country's remarkable science and technology achievements since the launch of its 1978 Reform and Opening-up Drive, but he also admitted that there is "still a large gap" with the world's most advanced.     Among developing countries, China had now taken the lead regarding the general level of science and technological development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     He attributed the achievements to the full support of the Party, the nation and the hard work by Chinese scientists and technicians.     Hu made the remarks at Monday's inaugural ceremony for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Science. BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Thursday night it had launched a level-three flood control emergency response mechanism to cope with Typhoon Kalmaegi.     Tropical storm Kalmaegi escalated to typhoon level on Thursday and was expected to be reinforced and land the coast areas in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on Friday, according to the headquarters. Chen Lei, deputy commander-in-chief of the headquarters, ordered local governments to start their emergency mechanism and make full preparations for the typhoon's landfall.     Meteorological, water resources, and transportation, and other related departments should closely monitor the situation and inform the public on time, said Chen.     Kalmaegi, the seventh tropical storm this year, is also expected to affect Shanghai on Friday and Saturday.     Under its influence, force 8-10 winds is predicted to blow on the sea off Zhejiang. Heavy storms are likely to hit the coast cities in Zhejiang, the provincial meteorological authority said Thursday.     It is also expected to bring heavy rain to Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in Fujian in the next two days.     The heavy rain would continue in Fujian until this weekend, according to the weather services.     Flood-control, offshore fishery and marine authorities in Fujian, Zhejiang and Shanghai have sent out warnings for early preparations against the storm. Ships and boats are advised to return to ports.

KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe.     In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation.     Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China."     China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum.     Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better.     "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. We, Europeans and Chinese, should seize every opportunity to smoothen out potential frictions and to bridge the gap between the intensification of our commercial relationship and the weakness of our intellectual exchanges. In this respect, the Euro-China Forum plays a crucial part. And its influence keeps growing." he said.     Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up.     "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said.     Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe.     The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said.     "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said.     The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.
