On Wednesday, reports surfaced that retailer Sears might file bankruptcy, which could force the closure of some, if not all, of the retailer's remaining 900 locations. Sears joined forces with Alvah Curtis Roebuck, the company quickly became a mail-to-order giant. By the mid-1890s, Sears had a 532-page catalog of items. According to the retailer, the 1895 catalog contained clothing, accessories, wagons, fishing tackle, stoves, furniture, china, musical instruments, saddles, firearms, buggies, bicycles, baby carriages and glassware. 1906: Not only was Sears expanding operations in Chicago, but it was also opening centers elsewhere, including in Dallas. The opening of a shipping operation in Dallas helped lower the cost of shipping for the retailer. 1913: The Kenmore brand launches, first as a line of sewing machines. In the 20s, Kenmore would launch a line of washing machines. It was not until the 70s when Kenmore expanded into refrigerators and air conditioners. 1927: The now mature, 40-year business was working in a different environment. America was starting to urbanize, as Americans started moving into city centers. This caused the explosion of chain stores throughout the US. In response, Sears opened its first retail store in 1925, showcasing items from the catalog. The store was such a success, Sears was able to open 26 more locations by 1927.  This was also the year the Craftsman line of tools launched. Although not manufactured by Sears, it was owned by Sears and sold at Sears stores and in catalogs. Sears would own exclusive rights to Craftsman tools until 2017, when it was sold to Black and Decker. 1931: For the first time in company history, the majority of Sears' revenue came from its retail stores. According to Sears, 53.4 percent of sales in 1931 were from its stores. By 1933, Sears opened 400 retail locations. 1941: As the United States entered into war, Sears' expansion of retail operations paused. At this point, Sears had opened 600 locations.1953: Sears resumes its growth not only in the United States, but it is also opening stores in Canada. 1973: Almost 90 years after moving to Chicago, Sears expands its operations into the Sears Tower, which is one of the tallest skyscrappers in the word. 1993: More than a decade after launching the Sears catalog, Sears ended production of the catalog, and instead shifted its focus on its brick and mortar locations, auto stores, and outlets. 2004: Kmart purchased Sears (then named the Sears Roebuck Co.) and merged the two brands into the Sears Holding Company. On the corner of South Park Street and West 16th in Little Rock, Arkansas, sits a bus bench.To the untrained eye, it is nothing more than some wood and concrete, but to the students at Central High School across the street, it is a reminder of the racism our country has faced.In 1957, Central became the first high school in a major U.S. city to desegregate when nine black students were escorted through crowds of white students by the National Guard so they could attend class.One of those black students, Elizabeth Eckford, was mercilessly heckled as she approached the school. So much so, that she turned away and retreated to that bus bench as a safe haven while she waited for a ride home."Even though it’s history, it didn’t happen too long ago,” said Adaja Cooper, who graduated from Central High School last year.Years after the 1957 Little Rock Nine crisis, the bus bench Eckford had sat on was removed for no particular reason. In the decades that followed, most did not bat an eye, until Cooper, a black student, was in her junior year of high school and wanted to recreate the piece of history as part of a school project known as The Memory Project.“It’s not just the story of building a bench, but the retelling of the history,” said Cooper. “It created a bond, and it’ll last for the rest of my life.”With the help of sophomore Milo Williams Thompson and history teacher George West, Cooper began pouring concrete, cutting wood, and reassembling the bench.It was not the first piece of history recreated by The Memory Project, but it was the most technical."It was supposed to be a one year project, and we couldn’t stop after we saw the experiences the students were having,” West said.By 2018, when Cooper was a senior and Williams Thompson was a junior, the bench was completed and placed on the corner once occupied by the original. For the students, it marked an achievement in craftsmanship, as well as personal growth."It’s that relationship that students begin to create, build, and experience beyond just the small universe that they arrive in,” said West. “They have a voice in the community.""We have to recognize that racism didn’t end in the 60s,” added Williams Thompson. “It’s still around and it’s still a national problem.”The Memory Project has created walking tours that supplement the ones taken by tourists at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site. (KGTV) — An investigation is underway to find a mail thief who appears to be targeting military families living on Camp Pendleton.A few weeks ago, Jessica, a Marine wife who lives on the base, went to her mailbox and saw a card from a friend in Arkansas."Opened up my card, and after I opened it, I realized there was a slit down the side," said Jessica.After a closer look, Jessica realized someone had been in her mail."A clean cut down the side. Didn't get caught on anything. A machine didn't make this ... Just irritated. It's an invasion of privacy," said Jessica.Jessica says her card never did contain any cash or gift cards, but others on base haven't been as lucky."They're furious, and they want something done," said Jessica.Jessica says on various Facebook pages connected to the base, hundreds have posted photos of tampered mail received in the past two months. The envelopes are usually missing cash, gift cards or checks."Pretty disgusting. Pretty shameful ... It's no accident it's happening to us. Military families are an easy target. We're not with our families. Families make up for it by sending us a little extra, definitely for our kids," said Jessica.So what is the commonality when it comes to the mail? It's processed and delivered by the Postal Service. The closest post office is about a mile-and-a-half from the base.The Postal Inspection Service confirms they've begun an investigation, along with an internal probe. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- A North County mother said Oceanside Police used excessive force on her son in a civil lawsuit that has been ongoing for nearly two years.Josette Pyper said her son, Timothy, has been battling mental health issues and addiction. She believes his injuries by police should not have happened.“It was horrible,” Pyper said, sharing her story publicly for the first time. “I couldn’t even watch the whole video. It’s hard. Very very hard.”Pyper is referring to the incident that happened on Nov. 22, 2018.According to the lawsuit filed against Oceanside police and the City of Oceanside, a report of tire slashing was called in by Timothy’s father. His father had a restraining order against him, yet often invited him to visit, according to court documents.The lawsuit states his father called police and also mentioned “that there were potentially two guns in the home.”Police came to investigate the possible restraining order violation and vandalism. Court documents said that police began making public announcements for him to come out of the home, but he did not.Several officers and police K-9 entered the home. They found him in a locked bedroom, which the lawsuit stated was Timothy’s room. An officer picked the lock and opened the door, ordering him to come out with his hands up.“Tim complied with the officers’ command and began walking towards the door. As he did so, the officers changed their command and told him to ‘crawl out,’” the lawsuit said. The family’s lawyers aid the command was confusing, as Timothy began to slowly walk towards the officers to surrender.Police body camera video shows Timothy slowly start to exit his bedroom with one armed raised and the other near his ribcage. “He was wearing only boxers and clearly did not possess any weapons. It looked as though he had been sleeping,” the lawsuit stated.With a shield, an officer pushed Timothy back into his bedroom. Video showed him on the ground after being shoved back into the room with his hands up and feet on the floor. The family’s lawyer said reports from officers that Timothy tried to “violently” strike police were false.The body camera video showed police pulling Timothy up to arrest him, then getting bit by the police K-9.“He’s in full surrender mode and it’s captured on video and they yank him up, they pull him up by his arm,” said the family’s attorney Christina Denning. “He trips over some clothes and then it’s just a brutal multi-tactical attack on him at every different angle as he’s screaming… for his life.”According to the lawsuit, one officer admitted to punching Timothy “with a closed fist in [his] right ribcage… and then applied a choke hold during the arrest.” Another officer admitted “he shot Tim with a .40 mm sponge impact munition,” or rubber bullet.“It’s not right… there was a point in that video where he actually was asking [for his] dad,” Pyper said. “They were still on top of him. Is that a threat?”Josette’s son has a criminal history. His most recent cases included public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia. She said Timothy is schizophrenic, dealing with addiction. She does not believe the officers were equipped to handle someone who has mental health issues.Oceanside City Attorney John Mullen defended officers. In a statement to Team 10, he said officers waited more than an hour before entering the bedroom and at least 44 orders were made demanding he exit the room. “As plaintiff approached the officers with one hand obscured, the officers deployed less than lethal tactics, including the use of a canine. The officers were concerned [Timothy] was trying to access a weapon,” Mullen wrote to Team 10.He said the restraining order was issued due to elder abuse against the father and that Timothy “violated this order and barricaded himself in the father’s house.”“OPD was called to this same address one month earlier for a similar violation of the restraining order and plaintiff was combative and injured two officers during that arrest,” Mullen said.Team 10 asked if officers knew of Timothy's mental health history and asked if the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team was called to the home. Mullen said “the City has no information concerning his mental state at the time of the incident or now.”Mullen said he does not believe PERT was called to the home "because this was an active crime scene with unsecured guns in the house."The family’s lawyers disputed that, saying officers were aware of his mental health from meetings they’ve had with opposing counsel.Pyper wants to her get her son help and firmly believes the incident with Oceanside Police could have been handled differently.“They need to be accountable for what happened," she said.A trial date is scheduled for late 2021. 4779

Apitherapy -- the medicinal use of bee hive products, including honey, pollen and bee venom -- was the woman's go-to treatment for stress and contractures, a tightening of her muscles that caused stiff joints.Live bee sting acupuncture "is a technique that is becoming more widely available" around the world, said Dr. Ricardo Madrigal-Burgaleta, senior author of a case study describing the Spanish woman's experience and previously her doctor at Madrid's Ramon y Cajal University Hospital.The case study was published in the current issue of the Journal of Investigational Allergology and Clinical Immunology.The woman had shown no negative side effects to bee sting acupuncture, he said.
