OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Oceanside is home to the oldest cafe on the historic Highway 101. Appropriately named Cafe 101, when you step inside, you take a step back in time inside a 50s-style diner filled with memories and history. Café 101 has been an Oceanside fixture since 1928 for one reason. "Location, location, location," says John Daley sitting at the counter. Daley should know for several reasons. He's a developer, a third-generation Oceanside native, and former owner of Cafe 101 and much of its rich history."At one time, this was even our local bus stop for Greyhound out in front of us," adds Daley. When Camp Pendleton opened during World War II, Oceanside exploded from 5,000 people to more than 12,000. Cafe 101 was not only a drive-in diner, but it also served as a trailer park. "So those people had to have some place to live, they have to have some place to eat, and some place to recreate,” explains Daley. “So, it was just a crazy time in Oceanside history."For those Marines, Cafe 101 was like a second home and the employees who worked there were like family. Years later, when Daley and his partners bought the restaurant in the mid-80s he would see those Marines, much older now with children and grandchildren, return to the cafe to relive memories."Me being a big talker, I love to go out and say high to as many as I could recognize, and thank them for their service, and tell their kids what a great job they did to make our country free," says Daley with a smile. Cafe 101 is pure nostalgia. From home cooked food to the stainless-steel tables, the red booths, and the table side jukeboxes. But what sets Cafe 101 apart is its symbolic mural on the south wall of the cafe. It’s been featured in magazines and newspapers all over the world. That mural is what makes Cafe 101 such an essential part of Oceanside. "It was kind of iconic in a sense," says Daley. "Which is really a 101-highway mural too. We put palm trees and cool cars, and we got the ocean in there too. Nothing better along the 101 than to have all those things on it." 2205
Officials at the Hermitage — the site of former President Andrew Jackson's former plantation home in Tennessee — have reported that Jackson's tomb has been vandalized.The incident was reported to the Metro Nashville Police Department. Officials with the Texas Animal Health Commission say a 2-year-old dog in Texas is the first animal in the state to be infected with the virus that causes the coronavirus in humans.In a news release, the officials with the health commission said the Tarrant County dog was tested by a veterinary as a precaution after its owners had the virus.“Based on current knowledge, there is no evidence that pets play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to people,” said Dr. Andy Schwartz, State Veterinarian in the release. “It’s always important to restrict contact with your pets and other animals, just like you would other people if you are infected with COVID-19 in order to protect them from infection.”The veterinary says the dog is healthy.There are now 12 other animals in the United States that have tested positive for the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.Officials say routine testing of animals is not recommended at this time. 1011
Officials with Operation Warp Speed confirmed Wednesday that they remain on track in their goal to distribute 20 million initial doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of the month.Health and Human Services Sec. Alex Azar, as well as Operation Warp Speed chief medical adviser Dr. Moncef Slaoui and the operation's chief operating officer Gen. Gus F. Perna, said Wednesday that the first shipments of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine were delivered largely without issue.The briefing comes just two days after medical centers across the country began administering the first initial doses of a COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer. That vaccine was approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA last Friday and was formally recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the weekend.The briefing also comes a day before a vote by an FDA panel on whether to recommend a COVID-19 vaccine produced by Moderna for Emergency Use Authorization. Should the panel vote in favor of the recommendation, it would keep the Moderna vaccine on track for authorization by next week.In a report released Tuesday, the FDA reaffirmed Moderna's safety and efficacy statistics that were published following the conclusion of the drug's Phase III trial. Slaoui also said that a vaccine candidate produced by Johnson & Johnson is slated to fill its Phase III trials by tomorrow, and that initial efficacy data for that drug would be available by early January. He added that initial results of a vaccine candidate produced by AstraZeneca could be available later in January.Azar also said Wednesday that though supplies remain limited, there are still some therapeutic drugs, like antibody treatments, available for high-risk COVID-19 in some areas. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Oceanside City Council just gave preliminary approval to a plan that would use city development fees as a way to provide homebuyers help with their down payments.City Councilman Christopher Rodriguez presented the idea, which he calls the Affordable Market Purchase Program (AMPP)."It's a win-win," says Rodriguez. "And it's the fastest way, in my opinion, to creating home ownership."Under the plan, people could borrow up to 20% of the home's asking price from the city. But, it can only be used on single-family homes up to 0,000 or multi-family units (townhomes and condos) up to 0,000. The money comes from the city's "In-Lieu" fund. That money is a fee developers pay to the city when they don't include the required affordable housing in their project.Rodriguez says the city currently has about .7 million in the fund."Every million dollars could help 14 people with down payments," he explains.To qualify, people need to be first-time homebuyers who make less than 115% of the county's median income. That's around ,000 a year for a family of 4.They have to have been either living in Oceanside for a year or working in Oceanside for six months.The program is also available to veterans or seniors who are over 65 or over 55 but currently living in an Oceanside mobile home park.Applicants must also chip in at least 1% of the home's value as their down payment.Rodriguez says this program can help people who otherwise wouldn't be able to buy a home because they can't save for a large enough down payment."A family that is struggling to make ends meet and pay rent and unable to save, now they're able to use a program like this," he says.The loan from the city would be repaid when the home is sold again, or when there's a title transfer, first mortgage repayment, or in 30 years.In addition to the full cost of the loan, the city would also get 25% of the appreciated value of the home. That money would go back into the fund to help more people."It's unique, it's relevant, and our community desperately needs opportunity," says Rodriguez.He adds that this could help businesses retain employees. Right now, many people who work in Oceanside live 20-30 minutes away. Rodriguez says getting them to buy homes in town would make them more effective as employees and more likely to stay in their current jobs.The City Council gave the plan a preliminary approval at Wednesday night's meeting.
