SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Willie O'Ree, who played seven seasons with the original San Diego Gulls after becoming the first African-American man to play in the NHL, will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday in Toronto.O'Ree was elected to the hall in June in the Builder Category, along with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, for his work growing the game.``This honor would not be possible if I had not rejoined the league in 1998,'' O'Ree said.  ``I was given a second wind to give back to the game and I am honored to be recognized.''Bettman said he was ``particularly honored to be part of a class that includes Willie O'Ree.''O'Ree became the NHL's diversity ambassador in 1998. You could be the first. You have the skills, you have the ability.``When I went to Kitchener (in 1955-56), (coach) Jack Stewart told me the same thing. When I turned pro with the Quebec Aces (in 1956-57), (general manager) Punch Imlach told me the same thing. It started to register with me. That gave me the extra confidence I needed.''O'Ree made his NHL debut on Jan. 18, 1958, in the Boston Bruins' 3-0 victory at Montreal. O'Ree played one more game with Boston that season, then returned to Quebec Hockey League's Quebec Aces.O'Ree played 43 games with the Bruins in the 1960-61 season, scoring four goals and having 10 assists in 43 games. O'Ree was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in June 1961, but never played for them.There would not be another black player in the NHL until 1974 when rookie left wing Mike Marson debuted with the expansion Washington Capitals.O'Ree was traded on Nov. 10, 1961 to the Los Angeles Blades of the Western Hockey League, who he played with until they disbanded in 1967 when the NHL expanded to Los Angeles.He joined the WHL's Gulls for the 1967-68 season, their second. He remained with the Gulls for their final seven seasons, scoring a career high-equaling 38 goals in the 1968-69 season.O'Ree returned to professional hockey after a three-season absence in 1978 at the age of 43 with the Pacific Hockey League's San Diego Hawks, scoring 21 goals and assisting on 25 others in 53 games.He played 19 years of professional hockey, despite losing the sight in his right eye as a result of being hit in the eye by a deflected puck while playing junior hockey in 1956.O'Ree kept his vision problem secret, because if it had been known, it would have ended his playing career.Alf Pike, who coached O'Ree with the Blades, figured O'Ree was keeping a vision problem secret and switched him to his right wing, and O'Ree blossomed into a top WHL scorer.Following his playing career, O'Ree was security director at the Coronado Hotel.O'Ree's many honors include the Order of Canada, his native country's highest civilian honor, and the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A graduate program at the University of San Diego that teaches peacebuilding will evaluate whether or not to send students back to Culiacán, Mexico. The concern comes after Thursday's bloody battle involving Mexican federal troops and the son of notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.The USD Kroc School's Trans-Border Institute has been regularly taking graduate students to Culiacán for the last five years, offering seminars and certificate programs in peacebuilding that have had an impact on the region, said program director Ev Meade."It's one of the only states in Mexico that's actually improved with respect to violence and was on the upswing until 3:30 yesterday afternoon and now all bets are off," Meade said in an interview.Meade was scheduled to speak at a conference on Friday but had to cancel the trip abruptly when cartel shooters laid siege to the city.The incident began when members of the Mexican National Guard patrolling a neighborhood in Culiacan and were ambushed by members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Among those members of the criminal gang was Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of "El Chapo" Guzman.Cartel forces blocked roads with burning cars and demanded the release of El Chapo's son, who had been captured by Mexican security forces.Violence spread across the city until authorities suspended operations and released Ovidio Guzman Lopez.At least seven people were killed in the battle, one Mexican National Guard member, one civilian, and five cartel members, according to Security Minister Alfonso Durazo."It was terrifying. I had friends who were trapped in their offices. Other friends who were trapped in restaurant bathrooms," said Meade.The USD program in Culiacán has trained hundreds of local activists, public officials, and entrepreneurs in peacebuilding and social innovation, according to the Kroc School.Thursday's violence showed an entire militia of criminals could descend on the city in less than an hour, Meade said. He and school leaders are now weighing whether to send students back."I mean this is the point of a school of peace studies to go to places in conflict and help. Apply our best knowledge and methods. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 91-year-old La Jolla resident is the first confirmed case of West Nile virus of the year in the county.The man was hospitalized with encephalitis in September but was confirmed Thursday to have the virus by the California Department of Public Health.He has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering, according to the county.RELATED: Community gives gift of mobility to young West Nile survivorThe man had not traveled outside of the county within the month prior to becoming ill, leading officials to believe the mosquito bite was local.Mosquitos trapped near the man's home tested negative for West Nile by the county Department of Environmental Health. Nearby residents have still been notified of the case.Last year, there were two confirmed cases of West Nile in the county, a drastic decrease from the 22 cases reported in 2016, in which two people died. So far this year, there have been 132 cases in California, including two deaths.RELATED: Mosquitoes in Santee test positive for West Nile virusMany of those infected with West Nile do not experience symptoms, the county says. About two out of 10 cases may suffer a headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands.The county reminds residents to protect themselves from mosquitos bites by wearing long sleeves and and pants, and using repellent when outdoors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported. He was Gallagher's platoon leader during the deployment and told investigators he learned about the alleged war crimes only after he was told about them by a special operator first class."Naval Special Warfare does not comment on specifics of an ongoing investigation in order to preserve its integrity, however all credible allegations of criminal activity are taken extremely seriously and thoroughly investigated," Naval Special Warfare spokeswoman Cmdr.
