It is a common sight this time of year---Amazon delivering packages, but this time it's some of Baltimore's 4,000 employees of the company helping it deliver 2,000 so-called "boxes of smiles" to those who need them the most in the city."This includes toys, gifts, items of personal care and so and so forth," said Amazon Operations Director Preet Virdi as workers brought the gifts into the City Hall Rotunda. The need for such essentials became evident earlier this year when the city attempted to put a number on its disenfranchised citizens."We have approximately 2500 men, women and children who were experiencing an episode of homelessness at that time," said City Homeless Services Director Jerrianne Anthony. For those who have experienced life without a roof over their head, the boxes of smiles represent far more than a collection of gifts and essentials."Amazing. Amazon. The gifts. We need them. We need the Mayor's Office of Human Services, because without them, we have no hope," Sakina Ilyas told the crowd. But once she stepped out of the spotlight of this staged event, Ilyas opened up about her own experience with her family's past homelessness."It was very, very stressful especially during the holidays. No family. Nowhere to go,” said Ilyas. “The problem here in Baltimore City is lack of housing. Lack of affordable housing. There are over 17,000 abandoned houses that are just sitting there."In the meantime, just 10 days from now, on December 20, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City will no longer accept applications for public housing, citing a waiting list of 14,000 that averages seven years to deliver. While the unexpected gifts, along with a check for ,000 are appreciated, Ilyas is left pondering the obvious."More is needed, because when this is gone, the stage is set, the curtain is open, but what happens when it's over?"The city did adopt a three-year action plan on homelessness earlier this year with the goal of combining action, results and concrete steps to address the problem. 2036
Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says an active-duty solider at Fort Leavenworth helped stop an active shooter Wednesday on the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River. In a news conference, Kitchens said the incident started on the Kansas side of the bridge. That's when a 34-year-old soldier from nearby Ft. Leavenworth stepped in and "saved the day" by striking the suspect with his vehicle, according to Kitchens."He saved countless people," Kitchens said.Kitchens said the suspect, described as a Platte County, Missouri man, was armed with at least a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle and was firing seemingly at random at cars on the bridge after getting out of his car.The suspect was injured in the crash with the soldier and was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.Another active-duty solider from Fort Leavenworth, was struck by the suspect's fire. That soldier's injuries were also not life-threatening.The soldier that stopped the shooter was not injured.Initially, police responded to the bridge around 11 a.m. on a possible road rage incident. The shooting incident was contained to the bridge and all parties have been detained. The Missouri Department of Transportation said the Centennial Bridge, which connects Leavenworth with Platte City, Missouri, has been closed for the investigation. 1348
In an interview with CNN, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said that coronavirus could be around for the entire duration of 2020 as the CDC prepares for the possibility of a widespread infection. This comes as the CDC says that the risk to the general public is low. While thousands have been infected in China, there have been only 15 confirmed cases in the United States. Although Redfield expects there is a possibility of it becoming a "community virus," aggressively monitoring those with suspected and confirmed cases buys the CDC time. The time is needed as Redfield told CNN that not much is known about how coronavirus is spread, and how to treat it. "The containment phase is really to give us more time. The virus will become a community virus at some point in time, this year or next year," Redfield told CNN. "We don't have any evidence that this coronavirus is really embedded in the community at this time, but with that said, we want to intensify our surveillance so that we're basing those conclusions based on data."Making things more challenging for Redfield, he said, is that it's possible for someone infected with coronavirus to not display symptoms. "What I've learned in the last two weeks is that the spectrum of this illness is much broader than was originally presented. There's much more asymptomatic illness," Redfield said. "A number of the confirmed cases that we confirmed actually just presented with a little sore throat."Click 1475
It’s been nearly four decades since a Northern Ireland-based start-up car company put a futuristic take on the sports car. With its low profile, sleek, stainless steel body and unmistakable gull-wing doors, DeLorean’s DMC-12 remains one of the most recognizable cars on the planet. “You're going down the road and people are just hanging out their windows taking pictures and videotaping,” explains DMC-12 owner Robert Keslar.Keslar bought his second DeLorean with severe engine damage eight years ago.“There was some fiberglass damage from the fire that occurred,” he said. “So, I did all that myself and then I brought it up here to the shop and they finished it up for me and got it back on the road.”Only one model, in one color, was ever released before the company shutdown production in 1982. Its founder John DeLorean was in legal hot water and the original company was left insolvent.“It was a perfect storm,” said current DeLorean Motor Company Vice President James Espey. “A bad economy, high interest rates and a bad exchange rate on the pound to the dollar.”With just over 9,000 produced, an estimated 6500 remain on the road today. But it was 1985’s "Back to the Future" that electrified audiences, cementing the DeLorean’s place in American pop culture. In the film, an incredulous Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox asks the question: “You built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd responds with this: “The way I look at it, if you’re going to build a time machine you ought to do it with some style.”It’s that style and original design that’s been frozen in time. And the re-imagined DeLorean Motor Company remains on its quest to bring the iconic luxury car into the future. “We still have people who don't know that the company is still in existence,” says Espey. DMC is now headquartered just outside of Houston in Humble, Texas. They specialize in the service and restoration of DeLorean cars. They even hope to one day produce new ones.“When the Delorean factory closed in late ‘82, all the remaining parts got shipped here to the United States,” according to Espey.Their warehouse, now a time-capsule, is lined with original parts manufactured nearly 40 years ago. “About three and a half million altogether,” says Espey. “Nuts Bolts Washers glass interior trim switches stainless steel panels pretty much everything to make a car.”That’s enough parts, potentially to build another 500 cars. But DMC says new production is on hold for now. They are waiting for final federal regulations for a law passed in 2015 that would allow them to produce a low volume of vintage cars that would be exempt from today’s emission standards. “In a perfect world that would lead to an all new DeLorean at some point in the future," says Espey.Fortunately, enthusiasts like Keslar don’t have to wait for the future. “The doors the finish the stainless steel there's just nothing else like it,” says Keslar with a smile. “It’s an absolute blast.”A blast from the past. 3024
