According to the American Heart Association, a stroke happens when a clot in a blood vessel stops blood from reaching the brain. Doctors believe the increase is due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes, and poor management of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. RELATED: Actor Luke Perry dies at age 52 after suffering strokeDoctors say it’s crucial to recognize the signs of a stroke: sudden severe headache, trouble walking, confusion, weakness, numbness, and difficulty speaking and seeing.
