Spectators might have to kiss a decades-old tradition goodbye in Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade.Women in the crowd are known to dash out into the streets and plant a smooch on uniformed service members marching in the Georgia port city's St. Patrick's Day parade, the second-largest in the United States and third-largest in the world.But military officials and parade organizers are hoping to curb amorous paradegoers this year.The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee announced last week it wants the pastime to come to a halt, something it's been attempting for years.The practice predates the 1960s but has gotten out of hand over time, said Brian Counihan, general chairman of city's parade committee.Kevin Larson, spokesman for nearby Fort Stewart, said that the military is just asking people to police themselves. It's not a law or a rule. Larson said that the soldiers marching in the parade are at work. They have to maintain their professionalism because they are representing the Army."At the end of the day, we enjoy taking part in these events," Larson said. "But we do need people to respect our soldiers' space."The bystanders running into the streets can also spark safety and security concerns."You can imagine when you have all these people marching, it causes a disturbance," Counihan said.He said the rush interrupts the movement of floats, causes service members to lose their formation and results in huge delays.The parade committee has tried to stop people from rushing into the streets before. Years ago, it told participants on floats not to throw beads or candy out into the crowd as a way to prevent anyone from getting hurt.The Savannah event started more than 190 years ago. About 280 units, including bands, soldiers and floats, march through the downtown streets of Georgia's oldest city.With this year's parade on Saturday, the committee is expecting more than 500,000 to show up, and all the hotels in the area have sold out, Counihan said.Typically, those watching the parade can just run into the streets and plant one on any passing soldier. Larson said that military officials know the bystanders can't be forced to stop."There are some people who like it and some who don't," he said. "It comes down to personal preference."He said that officials have suggested that soldiers who do not want to be kissed can say no or offer a handshake instead.Still, the parade committee chief insists, "We are not party poopers."This is a large event, and we are just trying to discourage people from interfering with these units," Counihan said. Some first responders worry if current COVID-19 hospitalization numbers do not start falling, the general population looking for care might get turned away.Bed space in intensive care units is not available in several major metropolitan areas around the country, as more COVID-19 patients come in.Last week, 224 ICU beds in the Albuquerque, New Mexico were reported as occupied despite the availability of only 192 within hospitals that reported data to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.According to data from HHS, 1 in 3 Americans is living in an area where hospitals have less than 15 percent of available intensive care beds, and 1 in 10 Americans are in an area with less than 5 percent capacity.“It’s scary,” said Maria Pais, an RN Supervisor at University of New Mexico Health. “We’re scared.”Since March, Pais has been helping the hospital convert areas into ICU chambers so it can handle the influx of patients.“Social distance so we can get through this and so we can have the beds we need in this hospital to care for you and your family,” she said.“It takes a toll on everybody, because daily, as we come into work, we never know what we’re going to be doing,” added Patrick Baker, director of the hospital’s Rapid Response Team.“I don’t envy the providers who have to sit there and make the plans for if and when we have to determine who gets care and who doesn’t,” he said.Baker says surgery units have been converted into ICUs as UNMH has reached a point where emergency rooms are now seeing effects as well.“It’s not just affecting COVID patients,” said Baker. “COVID patients coming in is a big deal, but how would you feel if you had to go to the emergency room because you got in a car accident and you weren’t able to be seen?”And the issue is not just affecting people coming into these hospitals but the men and women tasked with keeping them running.“Staff to take care of the patients in the beds is more likely the limiting resource that we have,” said Barclay Berdan, CEO of Texas Health Resources, which oversees the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Sitting in the front seat of his white Ryder semi-truck, Graig Morin often has some of the best views of Maine as he crisscrosses the state making deliveries. But the best seat in this cab belongs to his dog, Lilly.Morin is the owner of Brown Dog Carriers in Biddeford, Maine, where dogs aren’t just a part of the company name, they’re part of the payroll.“My wife got her when she was a puppy. She’s 12-years-old now,” Morin said looking at Lilly, a chocolate lab, whose front whiskers have started growing gray with time.Lilly likely does not know that an entire business is named after her, but she has provided plenty of company over the years. Morin estimates the pair has traveled the better part of 500,000 miles together. She’s become such a fixture in his passenger seat that customers often wonder when she’s not around.“A lot of time at deliveries I’ll get, ‘Where’s the dog?’” he added.These days, the trips have become more frequent.In the spring, Morin and Lilly started seeing a massive uptick in business. Deliveries were skyrocketing with people quarantined at home. At the same time, though, Morin also saw other small businesses struggling and wanted to help.“Why not? If everyone that could, did, we’d live in a much better world,” he said about the company’s response.With the extra money they were making, Brown Dog would give out free coffee to first responders.
