Community colleges across the country have been an essential part of higher education. During the pandemic, many are seeing a decline in enrollment as issues like child care and internet access affect students."It's an issue. We did a survey in the spring semester of our students and about 24% of our students said they either had no WiFi access or it was spotty and that’s a quarter of our students," said Rebecca Ashford, President of Chattanooga State Community College. Dr. Ashford says their school enrollment is down by 7%. Chattanooga State Community College even started a technology pantry, similar to a food pantry but instead of food it offers donated laptops and other technology materials to help equip students with online learning."I think the uncertainty of the whole world and situation that we’re in, the demands of family, uncertainty about jobs and the lack of technology access - or just the fear of it because a lot of students are fearful of taking online classes. I think it's just the perfect storm," said Dr. Ashford."A lot of our students are concerned about what should they do. Should I go back to school? Should I stay in school? There's a lot of concerns, [students who] need to go out and make money, maybe someone in their family has lost a job," said Dr. Carole Goldsmith, President of Fresno City College in California. Fresno City College is reporting a 15% decline in enrollment. Like Chattanooga State Community College, Fresno City College students aren't able to take a number of classes that require in-person learning. Classes like welding, science labs and more."Our performing arts. We have a very large theatrical program; dance, song, music and all of those programs we’re not able to bring them back face-to-face so a lot of them unfortunately are dropping out," said Dr. Goldsmith. Dr. Goldsmith says, at the same time, they're seeing some spikes in classes that many students use to transfer to a four-year university, like engineering and math. Students possibly finding it more economical to take the courses online at their local community college than spend the money on a virtual university tuition. "Some of those counts that we’re seeing increase in some of the general education transfer courses is really quite telling and I think as we move forward it may change how we do business for many years to come," said Dr. Goldsmith.The community college has also been loaning out laptops and WiFi hotspots to students who need them. At Chattanooga State, educators are hoping students who've been unable to continue classes know that the school is ready and here for them when they're able to come back. And that, in general, they don't fall too far behind. "We do know that students who take a gap year are, I think it's about 25% or so, less likely to complete a degree. And so, we’ve been really trying to get the message out about not taking a gap year and continuing your education," said Dr. Ashford. 2968

CLEVELAND — Have you ever heard of an emotional support animal being a squirrel?A passenger boarding a Frontier Airlines flight in Orlando headed to Cleveland got on the plane with one Tuesday night.A Frontier Airlines official said the passenger did note in their reservation that they were bringing an emotional support animal but did not indicate that it was a squirrel.Frontier Airlines does not allow rodents on flights.When they told the passenger of the policy and asked her to deplane, she refused and Orlando police were called. Many passengers WEWS spoke to didn't seem annoyed or angry but rather amused."The joke of the plane was hashtag squirrel so you’ll probably see it all over social media," said passenger Amber Calhoun.She was eventually escorted off the plane, allowing the plane to depart. A spokesperson for Frontier Airlines said the woman's ticket did indicate she had an emotional support animal but never specified the type of animal.The whole fiasco delayed the flight for almost two hours.  1046

CLEVELAND — Who’s been at a store buying holiday gifts and then the cashier asks, “do you want to sign up for our credit card today?” They might offer a discount or something else, but should you sign on the dotted line?“They make it easy. They really make it easy,” Leanne Smith said.Smith is from Solon and knows how stores can tempt you with their credit cards, but she’s sticking to her Target Red Card for now.“I don’t think it’s a responsible thing for me to have one at every store,” she said.Tedd Rossman from CreditCards.com said that if you ever plan on carrying a balance, store cards aren’t going to be the best option for you.“While sometimes these store cards can work for you, most of the time, they’re not the most consumer-friendly option,” Rossman said.That’s because Rossman says the average store credit card has an interest rate of 25%, some as high as 29.99% such as Discount Tire, Big Lots and jewelry store cards like Kay Jewelers.“These cards are not as selective about credit quality, which is why the retailers and their bank partners say they have to charge such high-interest rates,” Rossman said.CreditCardInsider.com recently rated various popular store cards based on various things like interest rates.Here are those results:Target - 24.4%Old navy - almost 26% (25.99%)Walmart - roughly 18-27% (17.99%-26.99%) interestNathan Grant from CreditCardInsider.com said you shouldn’t just sign-up at the checkout on a whim even if there’s a discount offered or cashback incentives.“The percentage of interest you’re paying might end up calculating to be more than what you got from spending on the cards,” Grant said.According to Grant, some of the better retailer cards are:Amazon prime cards with lower interest rates—5% back on Amazon purchases and gift cards when you sign up. It could help you build credit, but you’ll want to pay off your balances every month and spend responsibly.And another thing to watch out for is deferred interest. COLLEGE EAST (CNS) - A 19-year-old man who was trying to sell one vehicle in the College East neighborhood ended up having another one stolen.The victim was trying to show a car, in the 5100 block of East Falls View Drive, to two men and a female suspect around 4 p.m. Saturday, but it wouldn't start.So he got his red 2007 Honda Civic, in order to give the for-sale car a boost.He left the keys in the Civic, and one of the supposed prospective buyers jumped into the driver's seat and started pulling away.The teenage victim tried to prevent the theft-in-progress by standing in front of his Honda.``The suspect pointed a black gun at the victim causing him to move out of the way and let the suspect take the car,'' Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The female suspect followed the Civic in a gray BMW, Heims said. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Like any other case, President Donald Trump’s positive COVID-19 test will set into motion a series of events designed to determine who the president might have been in close contact with. That investigation—called contact tracing—is considered by many experts to be one of the best ways of handling new outbreaks and potential COVID-19 clusters.President Trump announced early Friday morning that he and the first lady had tested positive for the virus. The president had been in Cleveland earlier in the week for the first presidential debate. The incubation period for COVID-19 is anywhere between two to 14 days, although in many cases the period is between three to five days. It remains unclear where and how President Trump was infected with the virus.Members of the small crowd that attended the debate in person were required to be tested for the virus. Anyone with a positive test was not allowed inside.In typical cases, once a person has tested positive for the virus, contact tracers—which act almost like disease detectives—will ask the patient a series of questions about their activities prior to the positive test. Eventually, the contact tracers will work to find out who the patient might have been in close contact with.Generally, close contact is defined as another person who may have been within six feet of the patient for at least 10 minutes. The people identified as close contacts will be alerted by the contact tracers of their possible exposure and risk of infection. All parties are then asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days.Although the close contacts are not apprised of the identity of the person who tested positive for the virus, sometimes they are not forthcoming with information to contact tracers.“When we call the contacts, you get a variety of responses. Sometimes people hang up, sometimes they cuss us out,” said Romona Brazile of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.The contact tracers will also ask the close contacts about any possible pre-existing conditions and advise them on how to keep the virus from spreading in their homes. The goal of contact tracing is to determine who might have been exposed in order to keep the virus from spreading uncontrollably.Whether it be SARS, HIV, or Ebola, contact tracing has been used by epidemiologists and virologists for decades. It is considered by many to be one of the best ways to prevent further spread of diseaseThe Cuyahoga County Board of Health has had anywhere from 60 to 75 contact tracers and can activate more as they are needed, officials said.
