SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pool for inmate fire crews is shrinking after a bill lessening crimes went into effect in California, according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Issac Sanchez.A record breaking wet winter led to a superbloom of epic proportions across San Diego County. New growth that will dry out and turn to tinder this summer, according to fire officials."We are poised daily, year round now to fight wildfire," Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said.Cal Fire relying on every resource to lend a hand if necessary.Our sister station in Redding reported last year one particular kind of crew is running low. Easy to see in their orange fire gear, volunteer inmate crews help firefigthers by completing tasks like digging fire breaks.Last year they had a "brown out" where they had to deactivate a crew to keep the others adequately staffed. "From what I understand it is absolutely an impact," Sanchez said referring to AB 109. The law, passed in 2011 lessened crimes for convicts ultimately letting out hundreds.According to our sister station, the humber of inmates at fire camps dropped from 2013 by 11%. That's 451 inmates.Leaving the CDCR with more work, "to identify and kinda steer eligible candidates into the program," Sanchez said.He said inmates must meet certain criteria like working well with others, being non-violent offenders, and meeting physical requirements."We still have enough folks to staff the crews, it's just a matter of identifying them at this point," Sanchez said.In San Diego County we have four inmate fire camps, in Fallbrook, Warner Springs, Julian and Boulevard. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Symphony Orchestra announced Thursday they are breaking ground in September for the Bayside Performance Park, a new permanent venue for the Orchestra at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.The Symphony Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday on the 9-month plan that will be complete in time for summer concerts in 2020.Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer said they are taking advantage of an underutilized part of the Embarcadero, "we've looked and there is no performance venue on the water like this, certainly not in the state of California, but probably the U.S."READ RELATED: San Diego Symphony's new bayside venue clears last hurdle before buildThe Symphony has been stalking the venue for years, "people had the idea to have a permanent venue out here for 17 years, but we have been hard at work for four," she said.The final project can seat up to 10,000, "feature a permanent, highly innovative, architecturally striking and acoustically superior outdoor stage that will allow the Symphony to present a wider variety of musical presentations and enrich the patron experience with improved sight-lines, expanded concession area and permanent bathrooms," the press release states."I understand that some people on Coronado are concerned about the potential for noise but it's good noise," neighbor Sam Ciccati said, excited about the new venue.
