BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Thursday pledged to deepen clean energy cooperation as U.S. commerce chief led a large green power delegation to Beijing."As major energy producers and consumers, China and the United States can work together extensively in the clean energy field," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke in Beijing.The driving force behind cooperation, Li said, lies in the fact that China is actively pushing ahead with clean energy projects while the United States has green energy expertise and technology.Li encouraged the two countries to work more closely in clean energy,greenhouse gas emissions reduction, technological development to add to the momentum of sustainable development.Locke is leading a delegation of business executives from American clean energy companies eyeing China's fast growing green energy market, the size of which the United States has predicted will be 100 billion U.S. dollars by 2020."These 24 companies we brought from America represent a cross-section, a variety of different sectors," Locke said at the start of the meeting."But they still represent the best the United States has to offer in terms of clean energy, energy efficiency, electricity generation and distribution," said Locke, who earlier travelled to Hong Kong and Shanghai on the trade mission that started Monday.The diverse trade mission, the first one led by a U.S. cabinet-level official since Barack Obama assumed the presidency, includes leading energy firms like General Electric and First Solar as well as less well-known companies.Locke, on his third visit to China since he became U.S. commerce chief, characterized clean energy as "an extremely promising industry to foster areas of growth and create new jobs."He underscored the U.S.'s commitment to working closely with China in clean energy.Locke will join U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other cabinet officials for the Second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Beijing.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) –- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed sympathy to the nine coal miners who were safely taken out of the Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province Monday morning.Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety, read a telegraph of Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang on the site. SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period.The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said.The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced a string of emergency measures Wednesday to provide convenient financial services for people in the quake-hit Qinghai Province and to support reconstruction.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, would lower the deposit reserve ratio for financial institutions in the quake area by 1 percentage point from Wednesday to help increase lending, said a statement posted on the website of the central bank.It would also reduce its rediscount rate for local Rural Credit Cooperatives by 1 percentage point to ease their financial burden.The rediscount rate is the interest rate charged to banks and deposit institutions when they borrow money from the central bank.The return of loans extended before the earthquake was not imperative until June 30, 2011. Residents and companies would be exempted from bad credit records if they could return their loans before the deadline, the central bank said.The statement urged local banks to resume business as soon as possible to meet rising demand for financial services.They should set up temporary outlets in tents, extend office hours and take measures to ensure adequate cash supplies so that residents could deposit and withdraw money conveniently.The measures were jointly introduced by the People's Bank of China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the China Insurance Regulatory Commission and the China Securities Regulatory Commission.The 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on April 14, leaving 2,183 people dead, 84 missing, and 12,135 injured as of Wednesday.
