(CNS) - An inmate was hospitalized with severe injuries after being found unresponsive in his cell at the South Bay Detention Facility in Chula Vista, authorities said Thursday.Around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, deputies assigned to South Bay Detention Facility, 500 Third Ave., found the man inside his cell "with obvious signs of trauma," San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said.The man, whose age and name were not immediately available, was taken to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Seiver said, adding that the victim was not expected to survive.The Sheriff's homicide unit responded and were investigating the circumstances leading up to the man's injuries. 716

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified the law enforcement officers involved in a deadly South Bay shooting in early October.Authorities say Sgt. John Holm, and officers Pakko Mendez, Javier Mendoza, and Lauren Chi with the California Highway Patrol were all involved.Sgt. Chobani is the latest company this year to raise its minimum wage to an hour.In a press release, Chobani's CEO and Founder Hamdi Ulukaya announced on Monday that the change would happen during the first quarter of 2021."This moment of uncertainty is a call for us to join together to strengthen communities and support those working tirelessly to make the food on the tables of families across America," said Ulukaya in the news release. "Businesses should serve the people and communities in which they operate. Raising our base starting salary is the right thing to do, and we hope other businesses, particularly food manufacturers, feel the same as we all work toward rebuilding our country."The hourly rate increase now results in the yogurt brand's average hourly pay at its manufacturing plants in South Edmeston, New York, and Twin Falls, Idaho, at approximately an hour.The current federal minimum wage is .25 an hour, according to the US Department of Labor.The company said about 70 percent of its employees are paid hourly.Other companies that have raised its minimum wage this year are Target and Hobby Lobby. 1139

(KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies.The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years.The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development.The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had more than 7,800 signatures.“It's quite the injustice, it's quite unfair, and it's plain out wrong,” said Barrera.Peralta has not spoken publicly about her demotion.On Monday August 10th, an in-car protest will take place at the district office with her supporters, including educators, families, and leaders of the local Filipino community.
