For 22 years, Derick Waller protected and served in New York City as a member of the New York City Police Department. He joined the NYPD in 1995, starting out as a street cop, but he eventually became a detective.“I absolutely loved being a police officer,” said Waller. “I loved helping with their problems, and I was fortunate to work in the communities of color, which I thought I could serve best.”While Waller enjoyed the comradery with other officers, serving in his hometown communities and helping people in need, there were things about the job he didn’t love and didn’t agree with.“The police department is basically a business, like you work at Macy’s you have to sell. Once you become a police officer, you have to bring in bodies,” said Waller.Bodies, he explained, is a term many officers use to describe when an officer makes an arrest and brings someone in to be booked and processed.“Let’s say you have the company commander of your precinct, he basically gets promoted based on how many arrests he gets,” Waller added. On the surface, that may not seem concerning, but what Waller witnessed was some officers over-policing, especially in communities of color, for the purpose of promotions, higher pay, or because of pressure to fill unofficial quotas.“There are so many amazing officers that just want to do right, but with that pressure on them, how can they?” asked Waller.Toward the end of Waller’s career, he began speaking up about arrest and citation quotas. He made his concerns public on what they were doing to officers’ mentality and the community. He believes what happened to him is a prime example of why so many officers around the country are concerned to speak up when they see another officer potentially doing something wrong or the department implementing questionable policing practices.“A lot of officers want to speak out, but they are so afraid of the retaliation that the police department is going to come after them,” said Waller. After Waller spoke out, he went from being named Officer of the Month to being written up and ridiculed.“I would come back after my days off my locker would be flipped over; they put a big rat poster on your desk, all kinds of stuff,” Waller recalled.Breaking through, the often referred to “blue wall of silence” made the last few years of his career tough, but he left the job still hopeful that improvements with policing could come.“There are many officers who love the job and there are good officers, more than not,” said Waller. “Right now, the definition of a good officer is the one who brings in those arrests. If we can change the definition, then maybe we can change the mentality of the police department.”Waller’s definition of a good officer is one who is respected but not feared in their community. 2796

Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who served as sheriff of Arizona's Maricopa County’s from 1993 to 2017, filed a libel lawsuit against The New York Times and a member of its editorial board Tuesday evening. Court documents obtained by show Arpaio is suing The Times and Michelle Cottle for the publication of Cottle’s August 2018 op-ed titled, “Well, at Least Sheriff Joe Isn’t Going to Congress - Arpaio’s loss in Arizona’s Senate Republican primary is a fitting end to the public life of a truly sadistic man.” In the opinion piece, Cottle calls Arpaio’s “24-year reign of terror” “medieval in its brutality,” and makes reference to the former Sheriff’s controversial practices, which include the creation of Tent City, the implementation of chain gangs, and forcing prisoners to wear pink underwear. The Times published Cottle’s op-ed after Arpaio was defeated by Martha McSally in the primary race for Jeff Flake's Senate seat. In the complaint, filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Arpaio’s team noted,  “While the Defamatory Article is strategically titled as an opinion piece, it contains several false, defamatory factual assertions concerning Plaintiff Arpaio.”A complaint within the lawsuit states Arpaio plans to run for Senate in 2020. The publication of Cottle's op-ed may prevent a successful run for Arpaio, according to court documents. "Plaintiff Arpaio’s chances and prospects of election to the U.S. Senate in 2020 have been severely harmed by the publication of false and fraudulent facts in the Defamatory Article," the lawsuit notes. "This also harms Plaintiff financially, as his chances of obtaining funding from the Republican establishment and donors for the 2020 election have been damaged by the publication of false and fraudulent representations in the Defamatory Article."Arpaio is seeking 7,500,000 in damages, as well as attorneys’ fees and costs. He is being represented by Larry Klayman, the chairman and general counsel for Freedom Watch, a conservative watchdog group.  2088

First lady Melania Trump's spokeswoman went after rapper T.I. Tuesday, whose most recent music video features a Trump lookalike dancing without clothes in a fake Oval Office."Like it or not, she is the first lady and this is the White House," Stephanie Grisham, Trump's communications director, told CNN in a statement. "It's disrespectful and disgusting to portray her this way simply because of politics. These kinds of vulgar attacks only further the divisiveness and bias in our country -- it needs to stop." 520

For the first time since March, one of the five major team sports leagues in the US welcomed fans into the stands.FC Dallas welcomed nearly 3,000 fans to its 20,000-seat venue on Wednesday. Before the start of the game, the national anthem was played. During the anthem, both Dallas’ and Nashville’s starting lineups knelt as a smattering of fans booed. The teams knelt in support of Black Lives Matter, and in opposition to racial inequality. The on-field protests are akin to the demonstrations by former NFL quarterback Colin Kapernick in 2016.While kneeling during the anthem has become common place in the NBA, the MLS did not have the national anthem performed during its mid-summer tournament in Orlando because no fans were in attendance. The MLS has said that the national anthem will only be performed if there are fans in attendance. As the MLS shifts from playing its games in a “bubble” in Orlando to teams’ home stadiums, some clubs will begin allowing a number of fans inside. One FC Dallas player spoke out, frustrated by the response from fans.“You can’t even have support from your own fans in your own stadium. It’s baffling to me,” FC Dallas’ Reggie Cannon told reporters. “As a team we try to give the best possible product on the field and these last six months have been absolute hell for us. Absolute hell.”But Cannon’s club said it supports the opinions of those who disagree.“FC Dallas supports our players and fans in their right to express themselves in a peaceful manner,” the club said in a statement. “The National Anthem was played before last night's match while the players were on the field which Major League Soccer requires when fans are in attendance. While we understand the decision to stand or kneel for the National Anthem is a polarizing issue, we hope that FC Dallas can be a leader in helping our community accept diverse viewpoints in a respectful way as we all work together in the ongoing fight for racial equality.” 1968

For more than 3 decades he wondered what happened to his mom. He knew that in 1987, when he was only 13-years-old, she left home to head to the store then never returned.
