They're slobbery. They have funny fur. They don't look like standard pups. But boy, are they cute for being so ugly — and that's the point. The 2019 World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California, took place Friday night with 19 good boys and girls up for the title. The annual contest recruits pooches from across the nation to compete for cash, a trophy and, of course, the crowning achievement of being the world's ugliest dog.The contest isn't about shaming dogs for their looks though. It's meant to promote pet adoption from shelters, and to show people that all dogs are deserving of love — no matter how they look. This year's winner hailed from Santa Rosa, California. Scamp the Tramp took home ,500 in cash, another ,500 to donate to an animal shelter and a shiny trophy. He and his human, Yvonne Morones, also won an appearance on the "Today" show.“He’s Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp,” Morones 937

There’s a place called Friendship Park between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California. It is the only place along the Southern California border where families can legally reunite on both sides of the fence. Friendship Park, or El Parque de la Amistad, is a historic meeting place on the US-Mexico border that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. On most days in San Diego, the park is lonely. But on weekends, it is overwhelmed with Americans hoping to see their relatives on the other side of the border. People come from hours away just to have a brief encounter with their families. In Tijuana, during the weekdays is a different story. The beach has numerous people there enjoying themselves. Most have nothing but good things to say about the opportunity the park provides on the weekends for those seeking to see their families on the other side. “I have lived her for 20 years and I got involved in the border stuff in the early 2000s,” said Dan Watman, a member of the organization Friends of Friendship Park. “When families reunite with each other here, they can’t kiss each other or hug each other. They can only touch the pinky-tips of their fingers through a little square through the fence.”Robert Vivar, also a member of Friends of Friendship Park, has used the park to see his grandkids since he’s been deported. “My son has come here a couple of times and I’ve seen my granddaughters as well,” Vivar said. “One occasion, I was fortunate enough that the security gate was opened, and I was able to give my son and grandchildren a hug.”Vivar said the park is a symbol of the bridge two countries can build instead of walls. The park is open on weekends between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for families to see each other on both sides of the fence. 1760

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recovered more guns at airports across the country in 2019 than ever before in the agency's history.According to TSA, 4,432 firearms were discovered in carry-on bags or on passengers at checkpoints across the country. Of those, TSA says 87% were loaded."The continued increase in the number of firearms that travelers bring to airport checkpoints is deeply troubling," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said. "There is a proper way to travel safely with a firearm. First and foremost, it should be unloaded. Then it should be packed in a hard-sided locked case, taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared, and checked."TSA recovered the most guns at these 10 airports:Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International — 323 firearms recoveredDallas/Fort Worth International — 217 firearms recoveredDenver International — 140 firearms recoveredGeorge Bush Intercontinental — 138 firearms recoveredPhoenix Sky Harbor International — 132 firearms recoveredDallas Love Field — 103 firearms recoveredFort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport — 100 firearms recoveredNashville International Airport — 97 firearms recoveredOrlando International Airport — 96 firearms recoveredTampa International — 87 firearms recoveredTravelers who bring firearms to checkpoints could face criminal charges and federal civil penalties of up to ,000. TSA says a typical first offense for carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is ,100. 1481
