After living in California’s Bay Area for eight years, Andrew Sanchez moved his family to Hawaii’s countryside“There are those obstacles,” he said of living in a metropolitan area. “There’s incredible amounts of traffic, pollution, crime. His company recently finished a 196-unit development called Lakehouse area outside of downtown Denver.He says a third of buyers are from out of the of area.“What we are finding, just because the cost of living or maybe new job opportunities or even just the lifestyle -- getting out of the city and getting to a place where you can work and play, it just seems like it’s attracting a lot of people,” Levitt said.That attraction of living away from a big city, however, does come at a cost.“It really required me to check my entitlements,” Sanchez said.Back in Hawaii, Sanchez said his family did have to give up several amenities when moving out of a big city.In the end, however, it was well worth it.“My kids are safe,” Sanchez said. “And you can’t put a price tag on that.” 2501

Access to city and county beaches will be limited for the Fourth of July weekend because of the statewide and local spike in COVID-19 cases.An order banning vehicular access to Nueces County bay and gulf beaches goes into effect Friday morning at 6 a.m. and ends at 6 a.m. July 7.The restrictions also include golf carts and all-terrain vehicles.What the order does not address is where the thousands of beach visitors expected this holiday weekend will be able to park.With beaches limited to pedestrians only, parking places will be at a premium because once they’re gone, you’re going to have to walk.Just a few weeks ago, local officials expected thousands of tourists flocking to Padre Island and packed beaches, similar to what we saw Memorial Day weekend.“You could have driven that beach and you weren’t going to find a space to get in on the beach,” said Director of Coastal Parks Scott Cross.Nueces County tried a similar plan over Easter weekend, with mixed results.“Easter weekend when we closed it down, it proved to us that the honor system is not going to work with these cables and barricades,” said Cross.This weekend, the county will keep vehicles out by blocking access roads with giant sand berms. While public parking near the beach is limited, local leaders aren’t worried.“We don’t expect traffic volumes to be where we thought they would be about two weeks ago,” said Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni.Even though Corpus Christi is a tourist destination, Zanoni believes now is not the time for out-of-town visitors.“We have a crisis going on here in our county; we’re one of the fastest-growing areas in terms of new COVID cases every day,” said Zanoni.City and county leaders worked closely to get beach orders out as early as possible to give potential visitors plenty of notice.“Hopefully people will hear the warnings, hear the advice,” said Zanoni. “If they do make it here it’s going to be a tough walk from anywhere on the island to the beach, I’m not sure that will be in their best interests.”“It’s really important that we do this for the safety of the people living here and the safety of people visiting here,” added Cross.KRIS' Greg Chandler first reported this story. 2221

  

According to a study published by UCLA's Anderson School of Management, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the U.S. economy into a "depression" and projects that the country's GDP won't return to pre-pandemic levels until early 2023.The study was published by David Shulman of UCLA's Anderson Forecast — a research firm at the school that publishes a quarterly outlook on the U.S. economy."Make no mistake, the public health crisis of the pandemic morphed into a depression-like crisis in the economy," Schulman wrote. "To call this crisis a recession is a misnomer."The report says that despite a drastic response from both the Trump Administration and the Federal Resevre, it will take years for both employment levels and GDP to return to were it was before COVID-19 reached America."Simply put, despite the Paycheck Protection Program too many small businesses will fail and millions of jobs in restaurants and personal service firms will disappear in the short-run," the report reads. "We believe that even with the availability of a vaccine it will take time for consumers to return to normal. (It took more than two years after 9/11 for air travel to return to its prior peak.) With businesses taking on a huge amount of debt, repayment of that debt will take a priority over new capital spending. And do not forget that state and local budgets suffered a revenue collapse that even with federal assistance it will take years to recover from."The U.S. lost 22 million non-farming jobs in the early months of the pandemic, the report says. The report does offer at least one bright spot: the housing market. The report mentions that despite high unemployment rates, "consumer demand remains strong" and that markets will return to pre-pandemic levels fairly soon.Finally, the report projects that the pandemic will accelerate some trends that were already in motion, particularly the growth of online retail, telecommuting and rising tensions between the U.S. and China. 1980

Arizona, California, Florida and Texas have seen massive spikes in recent weeks before dropping in recent days — likely due to lack of reporting over the Fourth of July holiday.Hospitalizations linked to the virus across the county have risen slightly in recent weeks and have spiked in states where the virus appears to be spreading quickly.Several states have either paused or rolled back steps to reopen businesses following lockdown-related restrictions in response to rising case numbers. A number of states and cities have also introduced ordinances requiring masks in public places.The U.S. also continues to be among the world leaders in cases per 100,000 people. Only Chile and Peru rank higher, according to Johns Hopkins. U.S. cases account for more than a quarter of all worldwide cases. Around the world, nearly 12 million people have contracted the virus and about 540,000 have died.The U.S.'s total number of cases is almost double that of Brazil — the country with the second-most confirmed cases of the virus. 1634
