SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some beach cities throughout San Diego County Monday closed beaches as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to worsen. Following Gov. Gavin Newsom's stay at home order for California, several beach-side cities saw beachgoers enjoying the outdoors without the required six-foot social distancing.Monday, County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said the county will issue an amendment to the public heath order limiting social gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. It looks like people are not able to do that," Wooten said. "We will be issuing an amendment to our health office's order that if jurisdictions are not able to enforce social gatherings then we will close beaches," Wooten said. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher added that people are encouraged to get exercise, but "what we don't want is the mass congregating of multiple social units."San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, however, didn't wait to see how that warning will play out around the county. "I have directed the [city] to move forward with closing all City-owned parks, beaches and trails. There were far too many ignoring physical distancing rules this weekend. The actions of a few can cost the lives of many. "Due to the number of people continuing to gather at city parks, trails and beaches, the City of Carlsbad announced it will temporarily close these public areas starting March 23 to help slow the spread of the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease," a city release stated.Carlsbad Police will enforce the closure using an "education-first" approach before issuing citations, the city said. Also late Monday night, the City of Encinitas announced it would be closing beaches. "The City of Encinitas is closing all City beaches, access points to beaches, and parking lots adjacent to beaches until further notice," city officials said in a news release.Imperial Beach followed suit, saying it would close its beaches "due to the inability to enforce social distancing," beginning Tuesday at 12 p.m.Sunday, San Diego Police officers shut down beach parking lots and discouraged large crowds from gathering. Officers began closing off parking lots, and even Fiesta Island, after dense crowds were seen at local beaches."The intention is to decrease the transmission of COVID-19," Wooten told reporters. "When we start to see our numbers come down, that's when we will reevaluate.""All these strategies are being done to flatten the curve."Also Monday, the State of California said it was closing state parks to vehicular traffic at some park units to reduce the density of visitors. "State Park Peace Officers, in cooperation with allied law enforcement entities, will continue patrolling all state park units and enforcing all regulations," the state said in a news release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several protesters were arrested in downtown San Diego Friday night as demonstrators gathered following a grand jury announcement in the Breonna Taylor case.San Diego Police tweeted just before 11 p.m. that three protesters were arrested at B Street and Columbia Street.One of the demonstrators was arrested for robbery of a cell phone while two others were arrested for interfering with an arrest. Police said a cell phone was stolen from a victim while they were recording the protesters.Police said earlier that roughly 40 to 50 protesters gathered in the downtown area.“We are again with the group to ensure they remain safe and the community remains safe. Traffic may be temporarily interrupted,” the department tweeted. 753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, San Diego's crown jewel, Balboa Park, turns 150 years old.San Diego will celebrate the founding of the iconic park on May 26 during the second annual Fiesta Botanica. The historic day will be marked with a parade, kids activities, park tours, butterfly and ladybug releases, and much more.Live performances are also planned at the park's Botanical Garden and Spreckels Organ Pavilion.In 1868, the City of San Diego moved to set aside 1,400 acres of land for the area then known as "City Park."
