A derecho, wildfires, and two hurricanes combined to cause massive economic losses throughout the US.According to Aon, the storms and West Coast wildfires caused billion in economic damage at a minimum.Hurricane Laura, which struck Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, caused the most damage at least billion in losses. Another tropical system, Hurricane Isaias, caused at least billion in economic losses.Last month’s major derecho that struck the Midwest, especially Iowa, was responsible for billion in damages.Wildfires in the west began to spread in August, causing at least billion in damages during the month. Those figures are expected to jump as the fires have grown in the first 11 days of September.“North America and Asia endured another impactful month of weather disasters in August,” Steve Bowen, director and meteorologist on the Impact Forecasting team at Aon, said. “Tropical cyclones, severe convective storms, and wildfires all left numerous financial and humanitarian challenges in their wake as the globe continues to deal with implications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus for re/insurers went beyond just tropical cyclone activity, however, as a historic derecho in the United States left a multi-billion-dollar insurance pay-out to property and agribusiness owners, and early season wildfires destroyed thousands of structures across California.” 1410

A Glendale, Arizona mother is speaking out after her daughter’s class was subject to an odd punishment. Brittany Trofy says her 7-year-old daughter and classmates were forced to walk in a circle on the Luke Elementary School playground last week as punishment. It was around noon that day and temperatures were likely in the high 90’s or even warmer.Trofy claims the march lasted anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. She says her daughter told her about the punishment when she came home that day.According to Trofy’s daughter, several kids complained of headaches and cramps. "The school stripped me of my right to nurture my child when she didn't feel good by not letting me know she didn't feel good,” Trofy said. The Dysart Unified School District confirmed to KNXV that they are reviewing the teacher’s actions that day. We’re told that the practice is not “district approved.” However, a spokesperson says it only lasted around five minutes. Students were checked by a school nurse and none displayed any signs of heat exhaustion. The Dysart Unified School District would not elaborate if the teacher would be facing punishment or has a history of questionable decision making. A spokesperson told us they cannot discuss personnel matters. "My daughter is right now scared to go back to school for fear of seeing the teacher that got frustrated with them,” Trofy said. A police officer was informed of the incident. A Georgia high school teacher is under investigation after he was filmed telling a student he "might" shoot the kid in the head.Paul Hagan, a white physics teacher at Rockdale Career Academy, was filmed ranting against an unidentified black student, according to Atlanta's WSB-TV."Don't smile at me, man," Hagan is heard telling the student. "That's how people like you get shot."In the video, which WSB shared on Facebook, Hagan goes on to say, "I gotta bet by the time you're 21 somebody's gonna put a bullet right through your head. OK? And it might be me the one who does it."The video was apparently shot by another student.Officials at Rockdale Career Academy are investigating the incident. A body found in Costa Rica has been identified as a Florida woman who went missing while she was on vacation, according to her family. The father and brother of Carla Stefaniak identified the body as the 36-year-old Tuesday night.During an exclusive interview with ABC Action News, Stefaniak's father, Carlos, said his heart shattered when he saw her body.Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) said an autopsy performed on her body showed that she had stab wounds around the neck and extremities and blunt-force trauma to the head.Family friend, Greg Zwolinsky, who is with them in Costa Rica, said he wants everyone to remember Stefaniak based on the radiance of her personality that is portrayed in pictures of her smiling.On Monday, a spokesperson for the OIJ confirmed that remains were found. The body was found in a wooded area as investigators combed through the region, roughly 1,000 feet away from where Miami resident and Tampa native, Carla Stefaniak, spent what was supposed to be her final night in Costa Rica last week, Judicial Investigator Director Walter Espinoza said in a press conference. On Monday night around 11 p.m., OIJ officials detained a security guard at the apartment complex, 32-year-old Bismarck Espinoza Martínez. Martínez has been in Costa Rica since June 2018.After Stefaniak was reported missing, agents began to investigate where she was last seen. Officials say that Martínez had the time and space to commit this crime and became a suspect because of the investigation. Specifically, his statements did not match video surveillance in and around the area at that time.In addition, fluids found in the apartment where Stefaniak was staying have the consistency of blood, OIJ officials said.Stefaniak traveled to Costa Rica to celebrate her 36th birthday, according to the family. She left for Costa Rica on Thanksgiving Day but had not been heard from since Tuesday, her brother, Carlos Caicedo, told ABC Action News.Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the complex that houses the Airbnb told ABC Action News they were "deeply saddened and devastated by the tragic events that occurred last week" and said that the owners were cooperating with authorities. He said the rental had been temporarily closed while officials conduct the investigation. The lawyer released the following statement:"Since 2013, Villa Le Mas has operated a small vacation rental facility located at San Antonio, Escazu, Costa Rica. We have received over a thousand guests with wonderful reviews about the property and our service.We are deeply saddened and devastated by the tragic events that occurred last week. The owners are fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation and we hope that once the facts are determined, the perpetrator is brought to justice.Our deepest sympathies are with the family of the victim of this horrible crime.While the investigation is ongoing, and since the focus of the owners is the comfort of our guests, the facility has been temporarily closed."Now that Stefaniak has been identified by her family, they say they will continue to press Costa Rican officials for more information on who killed her.  3301
