BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines Co., Ltd. said Saturday here that its current combined debt surpassed 752 million yuan (110.1 million U.S. dollars).     Zhao Changbing, spokesperson of the company, said the announcement was made to counter rumors about the status quo of the company's assets and debt     Zhao said total assets of the company stood at 1.01 billion yuan.     Established in 2005 in central Hubei Province, East Star Airlines operated more than 20 routes. HONG KONG, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China will definitely be able to meet the target of achieving eight percent economic growth in 2009, a senior official of the country's top economic planning body said here Monday.     "Judging from the indicators of the first four months, I do believe it is highly possible to achieve an eight percent growth for the full year. In fact, I believe the target will definitely be met," said Xulin, head of the Department of Fiscal and Financial Affairs of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Speaking at a briefing in Hong Kong, Xu said the basic assessment was that there has been consolidation in the recovery momentum and that the minor slowdown in April, normal as it has been when considering the past experiences, did not necessarily signal a second bottom in the ongoing economic downturn.     Economic planners have been monitoring the economy closely and are prepared to put in place additional measures in the coming months if it is necessary, Xu said.     Post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan province was being carried out quicker than previously planned. Small and medium enterprises were receiving financing aid from guarantee programs, Xu told local as well as foreign reporters.     The National Development and Reform Commission will approve 600 billion yuan (88 billion U.S. dollars) of corporate bonds this year as the IPO market remained cool, compared with 236 billion (35 billion U.S. dollars) for 2008, Xu said.     The debt of the Chinese government was about 20 percent of gross domestic product, compared with over 190 percent for Japan, close to 100 percent for the United States and 60 percent on average for the European economies.     The Chinese government has planned a budget deficit of 950 billion yuan (139 billion U.S. dollars) for 2009, which represented about 2.8 percent of gross domestic product.     Xu said the ample resources could sustain heavy government investment to stimulate the economy for several years although "it was not necessary. URUMQI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top leadership has vowed to punish those responsible for Sunday's riot in the northwestern Xinjiang region in accordance with the law and to educate those taking part in it after being deceived by separatists. Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour of the autonomous region on Friday that all available efforts should be mobilized to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."     The Party's top official in charge of law enforcement stressed that efforts should be made to "resolutely implement" the spirit of the Political Bureau meeting on Wednesday night, and use "tough measures" to ensure stability.     President Hu Jintao on Wednesday night convened a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the deadly Xinjiang riot. "Those taking part in the riot due to provocation and deceit by separatists, should be given education."     Hu's stance in handling the riot was echoed by Zhou, one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, who arrived in the region Thursday afternoon.     Zhou said Thursday that the government and the Party would crack down hard on violence, severely punish the outlaws in accordance with the law, so as to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, safeguard ethnic unity and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible.     The country's top police officer Meng Jianzhu was the first senior official from the central government to arrive in the Xinjiang region.     When visiting residents injured by the rioters and family members of those victims in Urumqi on Wednesday, the state councilor and public security minister urged "no leniency in the punishment of thugs who took part in the Urumqi riot".     Meng said leading rioters should be punished "with the utmost severity" and those taking part in the riot, who were provoked and cheated by separatists, should be given persuasion and education.     "All the thugs in the riot should be severely punished in accordance with law, otherwise we will let the victims and their relatives down," Meng repeated his comment on Thursday while visiting residents in Urumqi and a funeral parlor to mourn the Armed Police and other victims of the riot.     Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang also stressed social harmony and stability on Wednesday.     He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a two-day visit to Gansu Province, which neighbors Xinjiang.     "The recent violence in Urumqi... has again alerted us to the importance of social stability. BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China has called for the EU to recognize its market economy status soon, said Yao Jian, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) here Friday.     China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming will attend the 11th China-EU Summit in Prague in the Czech Republic next week, Yao said.     The summit will address China's desire to be recognized as full market economy by the EU soon, the limitation on high-tech exports to China from the EU and bilateral economic cooperation, Yao said.     China need not be recognized by any country in terms of market economy as a concept, but market economy status is a technicality that will help China receive fair treatment in anti-dumping investigations, Yao said.
