A woman is in custody and a toddler is missing from Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, after the child's father said a rideshare driver abducted his daughter on Saturday evening, according to police documents and a news release.Paul Johnson said he was riding in a car with Lyft and Uber stickers with his daughter and a friend, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Allegheny County police.Johnson said that when he got out of the car and went to get his daughter out of the car seat, the driver drove away with the toddler, the complaint said. The complaint didn't identify the child, but a police news release said she is named Nalani.Johnson told detectives he tried calling the driver's cellphone multiple times but she never picked up, so he called 911 around 5 p.m. ET.Police arrested driver Sharena Nancy, 25, in the vehicle during a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. ET, but did not find the child inside, the complaint said.According to the complaint, Nancy told detectives that Johnson sold the child to an individual for ,000 and asked her to complete the dropoff.Nancy said he showed her a photo of a black woman she was supposed to meet and asked her to drive the toddler "20 minutes" from a gas station in Monroeville along US Route 22 to meet the woman, the complaint says.Nancy said she was told the woman would then "flag" her down and Nancy was to turn over the toddler, the complaint says.Nancy told detectives she encountered a silver SUV with out-of-state plates parked on the side of the road and did as she had been instructed -- passing the toddler and the carseat over to a woman standing next to the car and then driving off. Nancy told police she also saw a second woman inside the SUV.Nancy said she then drove around, smoked cigarettes and talked on the phone with her husband, the complaint said.Nancy, who is being held without bail at the Allegheny County jail, was arraigned on Monday after being charged with kidnapping of a minor, interference with custody of children and concealment of whereabouts of a child. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 16.CNN was unable to identify or reach an attorney for Nancy.Nalani's grandmother, Taji Walsh, told 2210
Actor Tom Hanks provided an update and shared a picture (seen above) on Thursday evening, one day after he announced that he and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, both tested positive for coronavirus while in Australia. "Rita Wilson and I want to thank everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us," Hanks said. "We have COVID-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else. There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. "We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are thing we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourseleves and each other, no? Hanks finished his update with a joke, which references his role in the hit movie "A League of Their Own.""Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball."On Wednesday, Hanks said, "We felt a bit tired, like we had colds and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too."Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University shows that Australia has 128 confirmed cases of coronavirus. 1084
Alan Turing, a crack code-breaker and visionary mathematician who was convicted under Victorian-era homophobic laws, will be the face of Britain's new £50 note.Bank of England Governor Mark Carney announced Monday that Turing, who killed himself in 1954 after he was subjected to chemical castration, will appear on the new polymer note by the end of 2021.In a statement, Carney lauded the Englishman as an "outstanding mathematician" and "a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand.""As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as war hero, Alan Turing's contributions were far ranging and path breaking," the central banker said.Turing is best known for his work at Bletchley Park, where UK cryptologists sought to decipher messages sent by the Nazis. His efforts to crack Germany's Enigma code were the subject of the 2014 film "The Imitation Game."He also played a pivotal role in developing computers, and early thinking about artificial intelligence. In 1937, he published a paper introducing an idea that came to be known as the Turing machine, which is considered to have formed the basis of modern computing. This was a hypothetical device that could come up with a solution to any problem that is computable. The note's design reflects Turing's work. It features a ticker tape of binary code that spells out his birthday (June 23, 1912), and depicts the "British Bombe" machine that helped break the Enigma code.It also includes a quote Turing gave to The Times newspaper in 1949: "This is only a foretaste of what is to come, and only the shadow of what is going to be."Supporters have long campaigned for Turing to receive greater recognition for his work and official acknowledgment that his conviction for homosexual activity was wrong. Two years after choosing castration to avoid a custodial sentence, he ended his life at the age of 41 by eating an apple laced with cyanide.Sex between men over the age of 21 was decriminalized in England and Wales in 1967. However the law was not changed in Scotland until 1980 and in Northern Ireland until 1982.British Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized for Turing's treatment by the justice system in the 1950s after thousands of people signed a petition in 2009.He received a royal pardon in 2014. 2295
America's fertility rate and the number of births nationwide are continuing to decline. The number of births for the United States last year dropped to its lowest in about three decades, according to provisional data in a new report from the National Center for Health Statistics at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."Even though the number of births we've seen in 2018 is the lowest that we've seen in 32 years, the total fertility rate is at a record low," said Brady Hamilton, a 509
An AK-47 style rifle legally purchased in Nevada and used to attack people at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in northern California couldn't have been purchased legally in California, state Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Monday.Becerra said it's also illegal to transport the assault-style weapon into the state."That weapon could not be sold in California. That weapon cannot be imported into the state of California," Becerra said in response to a question about the assault-style rifle used in the shooting.Becerra added: "There is a very strong likelihood as we develop the evidence that the perpetrator in this particular case violated California law on top of the crimes of homicide and so forth, the crimes that we have that are meant to prevent individuals from carrying out this type of activity."Santino William Legan, 19, killed three people and injured at least 12 others at festival on Sunday with the rifle he bought July 9 in neighboring Nevada, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee told reporters Monday. Three officers who responded within a minute of the gunfire fatally shot Legan, he said.Legan apparently entered the annual festival, which attracts about 100,000 people every year, by using a tool to cut through a back fence and then 1266
