SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County law enforcement officials say overdose deaths from fentanyl have sharply increased since last year.The San Diego County District Attorney Office said in the first six months of 2020, there have been 203 fentanyl-related deaths: 119 have been confirmed and 84 are pending confirmation. The victims range in age from 17 to 66 years old.In all of 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the county."This alarming uptick demonstrates that dealers continue cutting various illegal drugs with fentanyl and now more than ever it’s a recipe for death," said District Attorney Summer Stephan. "The public needs to be aware of the danger of using any controlled substance even if packaged like a harmless medicinal pill. Higher overdose numbers tell us there’s likely more product on the street in San Diego that may be laced with deadly fentanyl. I’m urging you to share this potentially life-saving message with your loved ones today."The DA's office says it is prosecuting several cases, including: In January, a 28-year-old smoked a powdery substance given to him by a friend. His mother found him unresponsive in the living room of her home. He was pronounced dead from a fentanyl overdose.In February, a 20-year-old suffering from anxiety, consumed a counterfeit oxycodone pill before going to bed. His roommates found him dead in the morning from a fentanyl overdose.In May, a 19-year-old purchased two Percocets from a friend. He consumed both pills and subsequently died from an overdose. He had fentanyl in his system at the time of his deathFentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and up to 50 times more potent than heroin, according to officials. Even in doses as little as two milligrams, the drug is lethal for most people. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least six employees with the VA San Diego Healthcare System counseling center have tested positive for the coronavirus.On Thursday, 10News spoke with several people who work at the location. The employees we spoke with said when people started having symptoms, they asked to work from home but were told to keep showing up.Too afraid to use their names or participate in any type of recorded interview for fear of retaliation from officials at the VA, the employees detailed their concerns over the phone. RELATED: Six San Diego VA employees test positive for coronavirusOne person told 10News, “We were begging for about two weeks to do telework.”Another employee said, “We were reporting cases of potential COVID (COVID-19) and asking for telework to quarantine and keep safe, and the answers we got back were, ‘We'll look into that.’” The employees tell 10News they work with homeless veterans and veterans with histories of chronic homelessness. Employees point to one sent last week where the director wrote, “You may have seen news reports about increased telework opportunities for federal employees. While this has been widely publicized, requests for the approval of new telework agreements will be very limited due to the limited bandwidth of telework systems and the need to have staff onsite to ensure the continuation of operations. Although some of you may have duties that could be performed remotely and would like to telework, at this time we need all employees who can work, to be present at their worksite.”At Wednesday's press conference with the County of San Diego, 10News asked county leaders if they aware of the cases at the VA office."The cases that are at that location are known to us and we are under an active investigation with the staff at that site," officials said. Per CDC guidance and VA protocols, individuals known to be at risk for a COVID-19 infection are immediately isolated to prevent potential spread to others.”Team 10 reached out to the VA spokesperson Thursday afternoon with additional questions regarding the allegations from employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime?
