SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Symphony canceled the remainder of its 2020 season today as COVID-19-related closures drag on, with some performances canceled through May 2021.All Jacobs Masterworks concerts at Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center have been canceled through Dec. 31. In addition, all special concerts and all concerts in the Broadway at the Jacobs, Jazz at the Jacobs, Fox Film and Family concert series have been canceled through May 2021.As a result of the cancellations and to simplify the ticketing process, the company will automatically move any 2020/21 subscription into the 2021/22 season. Symphony staff plans to share details of the 2021/22 season programming in April 2021.``While our venues -- Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center, and The Shell -- remain closed, we continue to connect with our audiences and each other through a variety of digital programs and the sharing of socially distanced performances by our musicians on social media,'' a statement on the symphony's social media read.``Thank you for the incredible loyalty and support you have shown to the symphony during this challenging time. We will get through this challenge and emerge a stronger organization and orchestra thanks to you.''The symphony has been closed since mid-March due to the pandemic, along with most other entertainment venues. A scheduled opening of ``The Shell,'' the symphony's new million outdoor home along the San Diego Bay, was scheduled for July 10, but Martha Gilmer, the symphony's CEO, canceled the opening in May and decided to push it to summer 2021. 1606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A controversial retirement center proposed by Skyline Church is moving ahead following a San Diego Planning Commission vote Friday.Officials voted five to one in favor of advancing to the development to the next step.Church officials are looking to build the retirement center in the Valle De Oro neighborhood. It would be located on almost nine acres next to Skyline Church. The 232 units would be made up of independent and assistant living spaces. The facility would also have a walking trail, offices, a pool, and clinics. Those who are in support of this plan say it’s needed because of the growing aging community in the San Diego County. "This application is more than just a request. It’s asking the County’s permission to serve our community, by seeking your permission for this retirement center," said Pastor Dan Grant of Skyline Church.Opponents say this will cause traffic problems in an already congested location along I-94 just East of Via Mercado. They add, this would be a huge environmental impact on the area. Now that the Planning Commission has agreed to move forward, they will bring this recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. 1180

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Carlsbad animal rescue is holding a very special baby shower in preparation of an influx of baby animals this spring. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Rancho Coastal Humane Society's San Diego Wildlife Center (SDWC) will collect donations for cottontail rabbits, squirrels, hawks, raccoons, owls, and other wildlife.“Wildlife babies are really difficult for humans to raise. Baby rabbits are extremely hard to raise away from their mother. Mothers leave the nest alone all day and only come to feed at dawn and dusk," Trish Jackman, SDWC's director, said. "Well-intentioned people sometimes ‘rescue’ baby wildlife that doesn’t need their help, and would possibly be better off left alone."There’s a list of items we’re going to need as more and more babies arrive in the coming days, weeks, and months ... A heated blanket or bag of bird food can save lives.”SDWC is looking for common animal care items, including:Bird seedBaby food- Beef onlyTimothy HayMillet seed sticksCat kibble – Science Diet – Optimal CarePaper towelsKleenexDish soapLaundry soapBleachAA-AAA-C batteriesDish towelsNylon gloves – no powder Sizes M/L<Frontline/AdvantageTo make donations online, visit SDWC's website here. 1226
