DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Ind. — More than 30 states have laws or local ordinances that prevent drivers from warming up their car without being inside of it, but it’s legal in Indiana – and every year, Hoosier drivers pay the price.“My husband started my car up for me to take my son to school and I came back out and my car was gone,” said Stacy Smith.Smith said her van had only been sitting in the driveway of her Indiana home and running for about 15 minutes. But that’s all it took for a thief to jump inside and drive away.Car thefts are all too common in Indianapolis. Over the past week, police have taken reports for at least 139 different incidents. Of those, at least 10 were listed as either warming up or running at the time they were stolen.Smith, who works for the Department of Corrections, says she’s been starting her car and letting it idle in the driveway for years, but it only took one time for her to learn an expensive lesson.The thieves didn’t just get away with her van.“They took my duty belt – it has my handcuffs, my OC (pepper spray), had all my kid's car seats,” said Smith.Police are asking drivers to think twice about starting their vehicles to warm them, and if you want it warmed before you leave to make sure you’re inside of it when it’s on.The other option police suggest is using a remote start with a kill switch, in case something happens. DEL MAR (KGTV) — For the first time, researchers set up receivers along San Diego coast with the ability to record when sharks are near. California State University Long Beach spent Wednesday working with Del Mar lifeguards as they dropped three receivers along the coast and tried tagging sharks nearby. Unfortunately, no sharks were tagged.Chris Lowe, with Shark Lab, tells 10News, “we just got money from the state to expand it throughout all of California.” They have receivers from Avila to the Mexico border but none located between Oceanside and La Jolla."This is a big gap for us,” Lowe says.Each receiver collects data from any tagged shark within 500 yards of the device. The receiver logs the time, date and is able to identify the exact shark based on the scanned tag. For a decade, CSU Long Beach has been studying the patterns of sharks and working to collect enough data to eventually predict where sharks will be at certain times of the year. 967

DENVER – Psychologists and social workers from Denver Public Schools were on-hand at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School Monday morning after a fourth-grade student died as a result of suicide late last week.The Denver County Coroner’s Office on Monday confirmed the boy, 9-year-old Jamel Myles, died as a result of hanging shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.On Friday, Shoemaker Elementary School Principal Christine Fleming sent a letter home to families at the school that Jamal had died. Fleming did not discuss the manner by which the boy had died, but shared a guide showing signs of stress that students might be showing in the wake of the boy’s death.“Our thoughts are with the student’s family at this time,” Fleming wrote. “We will continue to process this sad news as a school community, and again, please feel free to reach out as needed for ongoing support.”Jamal's mother Leia Pierce told the Denver Post that the suicide was a result of being bullied after the boy came out as gay. “My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,” Pierce told The Denver Post on Monday. “He didn’t deserve this. He wanted to make everybody happy even when he wasn’t. I want him back so bad.”Pierce went on to say, “He was scared because he is a boy and it’s harder on boys when they come out. Data shows the number of prison inmates testing positive for the coronavirus soared well past the 50,000 mark this week. The increase is a sign that recent outbreaks are threatening to undo control measures put in place earlier in the pandemic. At the end of June, the total number of coronavirus cases among prisoners had reached at least 52,649, an increase of 8% from the week before. That's according to data compiled by the Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization focusing on criminal justice, and The Associated Press. (KGTV) - Holiday travelers hit a snag getting home from San Diego when all trains from Downtown to Oceanside were canceled Saturday while crews worked to reinforce a Del Mar cliff-side after it collapsed Friday.Sky10 flew over the affected area Friday, capturing a portion of cliff-side hollowed out feet away from train tracks near 13th Street.Amtrak posted a bus bridge was used from 6 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday due to "unscheduled track work."This left travelers stressed out and frustrated. 10News saw one woman crying in the Santa Fe Depot, concerned about getting home. Two men were so desperate Saturday afternoon they ordered a Lyft to get to Los Angeles.Crews put in metal plates and back-filled with a concrete slurry, reinforcing the cliff and tracks on top. They were confident it would be a long-time fix."It doesn’t seem like a safe thing, it seems like it should be moved, someone said you can’t stop Mother Nature," passenger Justice Drake said. He was in town from Oceanside, visiting his mother in El Cajon for Thanksgiving."People are frustrated, but I feel like don’t get frustrated with the people at the desk because it’s not their fault," passenger Lauren Cono said at the depot.
