SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry. I'm at work and here's someone in my home taking the things I'm working for," said Meduna. If you have any information on the cases, call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1809

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local marijuana testing lab is releasing vape test results that are alarming. Almost 80% of the cannabis vape cartridges were tested and deemed "unfit for consumption."Tucked away in a quiet San Diego business park, Platinum Vape manufacturing company produces high-potency, pesticide-free cannabis products that go through rigorous testing. Co-founder George Sadler is on a mission to spread awareness about the serious potential health risks of using products from unlicensed vape makers and sellers."It's horrible," he tells 10News, adding, "It's doing so much harm to people, versus walking into a licensed store."Platinum Vape recently teamed up with nearby licensed cannabis dispensary Mankind to buy back cartridges that ranged from home-made concentrates to counterfeits of popular legal brands. In exchange, customers got discounted Platinum Vape cartridges that are tested and regulated.Mankind Chief Operating Officer Vera Levitt tells 10News, "We wanted to encourage them to replace something that could make them sick with something that was safe."The cartridges were sent to Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, or InfiniteCAL. It's a local cannabis testing lab that then analyzed the cartridges for potency, pesticides, and heavy metals. The lab found that 79% of the cartridges were deemed "unfit for consumption". Additionally, 62% of them failed for pesticides. Almost 40% of the cartridges failed for lead."[Were there] toxic levels of lead?" 10News asks InfiniteCAL co-founder David Marelius. "One of the vape pens had almost a hundred times the legal limit," he explains. The lab also discovered that half of the products had less than 50% THC in them. Some of the cartridges were cut with excessive levels of vitamin E acetate; the additive may be linked to numerous vape-related deaths and illnesses. Marelius adds, "20% of them had a significant amount.""It's sad for me. Public safety is a really important part of what we do and what we believe in," says Levitt.Levitt says that the only way to ensure that customers are getting safe products is if they buy them from licensed dispensaries that have purchased products from distributors that are regulated by the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, like Platinum Vape."I think the exposure needs to be there for people to really understand what's happening," adds Sadler.Visit the link below to check out any marijuana dispensary's licensing status.https://online.bcc.ca.gov/bcc/customization/bcc/cap/licenseSearch.aspx 2520

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A number of San Diegans who were abroad in Peru are now stranded there amid the coronavirus outbreak. On March 15, as the disease spread, the Peruvian government declared a 15-day national quarantine, eliminating travel out of the country. The U.S. government has taken the first 600 American tourists out of Peru, but the San Diegans who are still there say they still don't have concrete information on when it will be their turn. RELATED: San Diegan living in Italy urges others to stay inside amid coronavirus crisisThey say the during the quarantine's first week their calls went largely unanswered, although it appears things are picking up. "It's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster but right now it's seeming that there's light at the end of the tunnel knowing that the State Department is working on repatriation flights, so I'm feeling hopeful right now," said Dr. Rupa Prasad, an anesthesiology resident at U.C. San Diego health.Prasad has been in Peru since March 8 for a capacity building medical mission with Dr. Reema Sanghvi, a U.C. San Diego anesthesiologist on the faculty. Sanghvi says the Peruvian citizens have treated them with a lot of respect and hospitality, but they want to get home to help their colleagues at a critical time. RELATED: FDA approves San Diego company's new coronavirus test-kit"Many of them are suffering with their children home, and so they are unable to come to work, and the ones who are able to come to work are exhausted," Sanghvi said. Andrew Palm, 25, has been living in Lima since December, where he enrolled in a Spanish language immersion program. He says the restrictions are tight, and that military officers will question people on the street who aren't wearing a mask or carrying grocery bags, the only acceptable ways to go outside. "The reason I want to come back home is because I don't know how bad this is going to get," said Palm, whose family lives in Rancho Bernardo. RELATED: Nurses plead for help during coronavirus pandemicA spokesman for the State Department says the department is working around the clock to assist American citizens overseas. He said those abroad should enroll in its smart traveler program for important updates, at step.state.gov. A State Department update on Monday said the Peruvian government has limited repatriation flights to the U.S. to those only arranged by the U.S. government and that citizens should beware of scams. 2453

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who is accused of falling asleep drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a Rancho Bernardo fire that killed his two children in 2017, has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.Henry Lopez was convicted last September of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and recklessly starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos.Wednesday, victim impact statements were read aloud — including a statement by Lopez — before the judge sentenced Lopez to 12 years and eight months behind bars.“[The] defendant has completely and utterly failed to accept the consequences of his actions. These horrible deaths were completely avoidable. The defendants actions caused a lot of pain. Christo’s and Isabella should both be with us today," the judge said during sentencing.RELATED: Rancho Bernardo mom opens up about children killed in fireThe fire sparked on Oct. 28, 2017 at the North County condominium. Prosecutors say Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette that likely made contact with a defective cell phone, sparking the blaze. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from the smoke, fire investigators said. His two children died in the blaze. Investigators say Cristos was burned to death and Isabella passed out from smoke inhalation and never woke up.Throughout the sentencing hearing Wednesday, heated moments erupted from Lopez's ex-wife and even one of the jurors."I told you if you continued on this path of reckless behavior something bad was going to happen. And guess what, it did," Nikia Lopez said. "Those kids are gone. You took my children." 1651
