When it comes to the classroom, it's not unusual for teachers to have assistants. But those helpers aren't always people. At one school, students are learning in a completely new way.We all know it can be fun to play with a dog. But by helping Buster get through an obstacle course, Buster's also helping elementary school student Mason Gentry in ways he hadn't planned."Definitely with focus," Gentry said. "Because sometimes I just have a hard time focusing."But how?"Because I have to help focus on what Buster is doing in order to do what I need to do with him," Gentry said.Buster is teaching schoolmates Ashton Huffman and Grant Meurer, something else."Patience," Huffman said.And it goes beyond getting Buster through the course."It teaches us that if you were to ask for something you can't just go now now I want it now," Meurer said.Once a week dogs like Buster and Mojo, come to Van Arsdale Elementary School in Colorado to work with students.They lead them through courses they've planned out using commands, which helps them develop their communication and confidence."They will get more confident each week," said Vivan Mulhern, coordinator at HABIC Denver. "They will say it louder and then you just see their skills improving and wanting to learn more so then they can connect science together and they can do things like that."Teacher Denise Gillette started the program after seeing how it impacted a student with autism."Were you surprised after that initial student had such a positive reaction from working with the dog?" Kumasi Aaron, a national reporter with The E.W. Scripps Co., asked."Yeah, I think I was surprised," Gillette said. "It was just so beneficial, just such growth."Now more students are seeing that growth, learning a variety of skills that can be challenging to teach, like patience, confidence and focus."They can work on something through the dog that you wouldn't really want to address directly with them," Gillette said. "Like I think if you put the spotlight on them and say you need to have impulse control then you get a resistance but when it's over we need to teach the dog this and then they see, 'Oh that's a valuable thing.'"Gillette writes personalized books to complement her student's work with the dogs, weaving in the lessons each one is trying to learn."Nobody wants to be told you need this you need that," Gillette said. "But when you're helping the dog get it's like, 'Oh okay now you're the helper and you're not always the student who has a problem.'"So while Coen Stevenson has taught Mojo some pretty cool tricks, Mojo's made it easier for him to learn."It makes me feel better to like do more stuff in class and like work better," Stevenson said.A change in curriculum, adding man's best friend, and much more. 2810

With Halloween less than two weeks away, many parents are trying to make plans to celebrate now. But with COVID-19 still a concern, families all over the United States are wondering if it's safe to go trick-or-treating this year.WFTS took those concerns to medical experts with Baycare Health, who say with some added safety precautions, your family can still take part in trick-or-treating, handing out candy and other Halloween festivities.If you plan to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, instead of handing out candy at your door, consider arranging individual treat bags on a table in your driveway or near the front door for a contact-less hand-off."Instead of having it all in a bucket, where everyone is putting their hands in, lay out a row so that when they come up, they can just grab one and go," said Michelle Sterling, the children's wellness and safety specialist with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. "Then, you can refill that row after the little trick-or-treaters leave your house."When it comes to going home-to-home for trick-or-treating, Sterling said be sure to wear a mask when around people who are not part of your household.Also, doctors say Halloween costume masks are not a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of fabric and fits snugly around your mouth and nose.Additionally, medical experts say wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth mask can make it difficult to breathe. Instead, they say to consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.Doctors also recommend keeping a physical distance of at least six feet from people who are not in your immediate household, using hand sanitizer often, and waiting to eat candy until you are at home and can wash your hands with soap and water.Keep in mind though, updated safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages families from taking part in traditional trick-or-treating.Sterling is also offering the following tricks for keeping Halloween a treat for your family during the pandemic:Go all out with the Halloween decorations. Keep it budget-friendly by having your kids help create decorations to hang from windows, trees, mailbox, etc. You could even turn one of your bedrooms into a kid-friendly haunted house.Decorate doors inside your house and let your little ones go trick-or-treating indoors. Get the whole family involved with mom or dad behind one door, an older sibling behind another and grandparents behind yet another door.Set up a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt in and around your house. Provide clues and leave treats along the route.Turn up your spooky Halloween music and have a dance party with your children. With immigration restrictions in place and limits on foreign workers, programs like the J-1 visa teacher program have been put on hold. This has impacted both foreign teachers in the US and those who were scheduled to teach here.Melvin Inojosa and Stella Indiongco are both from the Philippines, working in the U.S. as part of the J-1 Visa teacher program. The program gives foreign educators the opportunity to teach in the U.S.“We have teachers in about 15 states right now” James Bell, the chief operating officer at Alliance Abroad, said.Alliance Abroad is one of many cultural exchange organizations connecting foreign teachers to U.S. schools and sponsoring them.“COVID has significantly impacted everything relating to J-1 teachers,” Bell said. “The president's proclamation on immigration essentially suspended J-1 teachers into coming into the country. And I have upwards of 100 that should be here by now.”President Donald Trump announced an extension to a temporary ban on foreign workers back in June. Based on immigration service data, the number of people affected was estimated at 500,000 people. The exact number of teachers impacted is unclear.The restrictions only apply to new workers coming to the U.S. For current workers, it means something else.“My close friend...is supposed to go back home because it's the end of her fifth year,” Indiongco said. “But because of the pandemic and shortage of teachers and freeze hiring, her district actually let her stay and extend another year.”Some teachers with expiring contracts were asked to stay. Indiongco herself had already planned to be in the U.S. for two more years, but her summer plans were impacted.“I wasn't able to see my family at all this year,” she said. The same happened for Inojosa.“My hair is already long because I only get my haircut in the Philippines. Every summer...we go back to the Philippines,” Inojosa said.The purpose of the decades-old cultural exchange program is to introduce American students to other cultures -- something that has also been hindered due to COVID-19.“I use food to share my culture,” Inojosa said. “They said it’s kind of a bad timing to gather and eat together, so right now we are limited to our actions regarding sharing our culture.”“I wasn't able to do any cultural exchange activity at all,” Indiongco said.J-1 teachers are navigating a new challenge. A new way of teaching, away from their home country. Inojosa and Indiongco are both pivoting to online learning.Inojosa’s typically full classroom with projects decorating the walls and shelves, will look a little more empty this year. The future of teaching and the J-1 program remains largely unknown.“The immigration ban will be in play through the end of December,” Bell said. That date could change. Current teachers fear this could make the program less desirable moving forward.“Since all the J-1 visas are not processed at all, they're stuck because they have no work there. They have no work here because they cannot come anyway,” Indiongco said.“Some of my friends waited for a very long time to grab this opportunity to enjoy the J-1 program,” Inojosa said.“J-1 visa is like a bridge to our dreams, coming from a third world country. I hate to say it, but coming from a third world country, everything is kind of slow,” Indiongco said.Even with the changing climate, Indiongco and Inojosa are gearing up to teach their students in whatever form necessary.“If I'm called to do my job, I will definitely do it,” Inojosa said. 3516
