There’s a new warning out by the American Psychological Association (APA) that says traditional masculine ideology has been shown to have a negative impact on men and boys.As a father and mentor, Dr. Ryan E. Ross knows expressing emotions is not traditionally what most men consider masculine. “Young men who I work with, when I see them I shake their hand and I give them a hug and I tell them that I’m proud of them and that I love them, so that they know that it's OK, and that's the kinds of things that they should be hearing,” says Dr. Ross. And he's right. According to new findings out from the American Psychological Association, traditional masculinity ideology--which also includes achievement, anti-femininity, and not appearing weak-- can negatively influence mental health and physical health. “You're taught to be tough; you're taught not to cry,” he says. “You know, you're taught certain things are cool you know certain ways certain attitudes.” That's why for the first time in its 127-year history, the APA has released guidelines to help psychologists specifically address the issues of men and boys. They include: encouraging psychologists to recognize that masculinities are constructed based on social, cultural, and contextual norms; understand the impact of power, privilege, and sexism on the development of boys and men and on their relationships with others; and reduce the high rates of problems boys and men face and act out in their lives such as aggression, violence, substance abuse, and suicide. Some people disagree with the APA’s report. In the Washington Observer, Nicole Russell wrote in part, "the APA gets it wrong from the beginning by asserting traditional masculinity holds only these traits, which are not even all negative, as negative."The study's authors say the intention is to educate and raise awareness on the unique issues facing men and boys. 1907

The ousted Grammys CEO is firing back at the Recording Academy, alleging she was removed after complaining about sexual harassment and pay disparities. Deborah Dugan also says she called out conflicts of interest in the nominations for music's biggest awards. Dugan was placed on administrative leave last week. Her lawyers filed a discrimination case Tuesday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In the sexual harassment and gender discrimination complaint filed Tuesday, Dugan alleges the voting process for the Grammy Awards is "illustrative of the boys' club mentality that exists at the Academy and amongst its Board members."Dugan also alleges that the nominations process is shrouded in secrecy, and that people who have professional or personal relationships with artists sit on the committees that finalize the nominees for the Grammy Awards."To make matters worse, the Board is permitted to simply add in artists for nominations who did not even make the initial 20-artist list. Naturally, the members of the 12 Board and the secret committees chose artists with whom they have personal or business relationships," the complaint states. The United States Department of Agriculture says grocery store prices will rise 1 to 2 percent this year. However, there are ways to still save. For starters, begin with the meat. "We have to pay close attention to those sale prices specifically," says Erin Chase, who is known as the Dollar Dinner Mom. Chase says to pay attention to the store’s sale cycles. "Start following the sales and the sale cycles, and you will start to notice, hey about every six weeks, chicken breast is on sale at my grocery store,” she says. “And maybe every eight to 10 weeks, ground beef is on sale at my grocery store." Chase recommends buying only meat for or less per pound. When it comes to seafood, it's rarely found in a circular, so ask your grocery store when it goes on sale. "Because it's reduced for a quick sale, you need to do something with it fairly quickly,” Chase says. Besides saving big on protein, Chase says items in the center isles can be a great place to save. "Those items are usually the most couponable," she says. Chase says some of her favorite things to save on include toiletries and cleaning supplies.
