SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a brush fire broke out near Scripps Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon. According to fire crews, the fire broke near northbound SR-163 and Washington Street. At this time it's unclear what caused the fire. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the area as passersby drove on the roadway.  381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Five people who witnessed a potentially deadly situation were honored by the California Highway Patrol Friday to taking action that helped save a man's life.Dennis McNea is a driver for the Freeway Service Patrol. His job is to help stranded motorists. But Nov. 13, 2019, he was driving on State Route 94 when he suffered a medical emergency. "Almost hit me," said witness Gina de la Torre, a Navy sailor who was on her way home at the time. "And as I saw him, he was hitting the highway barrier and I noticed that he was slumped over in his car."RELATED: Community helps man devoted to keeping park cleanAnother witness, Alberto Robles, used his own truck to make contact with McNea's, slowing them both down to a stop. The other four, including de la Torre, stopped to help. "They just kind of stopped and looked at me like, 'What do we do?'" she told 10News. "So that's when I was like, okay, keep calm and just do whatever you have to do."They performed CPR until medics arrived. "I don't remember what happened to me at all," McNea said. "I woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. "A million thanks is not enough. They gave me a lottery ticket. They gave me life. You can have a billion dollars, but you can't buy life, and they gave me life," McNea said.McNea has since returned to work. He says he plans to take CPR training so he can provide the same life-saving support he received to others in need. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, the coronavirus has made an already stressful time even more troubling."Absolutely," says Christie Kinghorn. Her daughter, Lexi, is getting treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome at Rady Children's Hospital. They're living at the Ronald McDonald House for about a month."I know the coronavirus has been hard on everyone," she explains. "But to deal with significant medical issues and be seeking treatment out of state during a pandemic was very difficult."To help keep their guests safe, the Ronald McDonald House put in new protocols throughout the facility."We used to have a very busy facility with people coming in and out throughout the daytime," says President Chuck Day. "Now, we've focused on our two critical services - overnight stays for families who need us and meals."Day says the facility has fewer guests now, as fewer people are going to Rady's for treatment or elective procedures. Typically, the Ronald McDonald House has 56 families staying in it, with another 30 on a waiting list. Right now, they only have 25 families on the campus."The main thing was to make sure we knew about the family staying at the house, are they safe, have they had any instance of exposure to COVID anytime," says Day.Before anyone checks in, they have to have a negative result on a coronavirus test. Visitors and staff also get temperature checks and health screenings to look for symptoms every time they enter the building.Social distancing and mask-wearing are also strictly enforced.As for meal service, Day says the cafeteria is now offering grab-and-go meals to families staying on campus. No one is allowed to eat in the large communal dining area.For people who come by to get meals while they spend time at the hospital, the Ronald McDonald House has set up a cooler outside with bagged meals.But all the extra precaution takes extra funding. As part of National Nonprofit Day on August 17, the Ronald McDonald House will match donations, up to 5,000. They also have a wish list of supplies set up on Amazon and their website."We went out and asked people who love us, 'Would you help us?' And they said, 'Yes.' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348
