Have you heard of the "Dirty Dozen" list? Every year, it lists the 12 fruits and veggies that have the most pesticides. Now, one group of researchers says the list may be scaring people unnecessarily.Laura Molina works to make sure her customers at her community market, Growhaus, pick the best fruits and veggies.“We try to bring everything organic and local,” Molina said.It ends up being a mix. So, when customers ask her how to pick between organic and conventional, she often gives them advice she takes herself.“Everything that I can peel, I can buy, like, not organic,” Molina explains. “But like lettuce, mushrooms, apples, I try to buy them organic.”But is there a set rule for choosing? Every year, a nonprofit called the Environmental Working Group puts out the "Dirty Dozen," a list of the 12 fruits and veggies most contaminated by pesticide residue.This year, apples, celery and tomatoes made the list.However, a group of scientists say these foods may not be as dirty as some once thought, and the way the EWG analyzed the data is flawed.“The benefit of fruits and vegetables far outweighs the potential concern of this pesticide residue,” registered dietitian Jessica Crandall said.Crandall says consumers would have to eat a lot of a certain fruit or vegetable to be affected by any pesticides.“You would have to be eating so many cups,” Crandall said. “Like 400-plus cups of strawberries per day in order for that residue to be a potential concern if you're an adult. And if your kid, needs to be around 200 cups per day of strawberries.”Those concerned about pesticides in produce can visit safefruitsandveggies.com to check pesticide levels in any produce item.Ultimately, the decision shouldn't be based on a list.“I believe it is a personal choice,” Crandall said. “And so if you like the way that it tastes, better then to go ahead and consume. Google desperately wanted to copy Facebook's success on social media. Instead it may be left with a version of one of Facebook's biggest failures.In 2011, as Facebook was rapidly approaching the one-billion-active-user milestone, Google made a last-ditch effort to beat back its online rival with the launch of a rival social network called Google+. The service unmistakably resembled Facebook, though with some novel additions, including more customized sharing options and group video chats.Seven years later, Google+ — the also-ran social network that Google was never willing to let die — is finally being moved to the company's trash folder, joining previously abandoned social products like Google Reader, Wave, Buzz and Orkut.But it appears Google Plus may have lasted just long enough to land Google in hot water.Google said Monday that it is shutting down Google Plus for consumer use after discovering a security bug that exposed the personal information of as many as 500,000 accounts on the social network. Worse still: Google waited more than six months to publicly disclose the security issue.The Wall Street Journal, which was first to report the bug, said Google's legal and policy team warned senior executives at the company that disclosing the security flaw could lead to "immediate regulatory interest." Google discovered the security bug in March, the same month that Facebook's Cambridge Analytica data scandal came to light, prompting a global privacy backlash.Google, for its part, says it found "no evidence" that any data was actually misused. To decide whether to notify the public, Google says its Privacy & Data Protection Office reviewed "the type of data involved, whether we could accurately identify the users to inform, whether there was any evidence of misuse, and whether there were any actions a developer or user could take in response. None of these thresholds were met in this instance."The security issue, and the company's delayed disclosure of it, risks exposing Google to the same regulatory scrutiny that has plagued Facebook — and all because of a product that was intended to help Google better compete with Facebook.The Irish Data Protection Commission said it wants to get more information from Google. Officials in Germany are also looking into the situation. Vera Jourova, Europe's top justice official, called the Google news "another reminder" of why the European Union "was right to go ahead with modern data protection rules," namely the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)."It seems that some of the big tech players are not eager to play fair without 'regulatory interest,'" Jourova wrote on Twitter.It wouldn't be the first time that chasing Facebook led Google into a regulatory rabbit hole. Shortly before Google+ launched, the company reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over charges that it violated its own privacy promises when launching Google Buzz, another social network.The FTC alleged at the time that some of Google's Gmail users were enrolled in certain Buzz features even if they had opted not to be. The commission also charged that users "were not adequately informed that the identity of individuals they emailed most frequently would be made public by default."Ashkan Soltani, a former FTC technologist who worked at the agency when it pursued investigations into Google and Facebook in 2011, told CNN Business the Google+ security issue could once again cause the FTC to investigate Google. But he said it will "depend on political pressure," because there are "much larger breaches to contend with."While Google's security bug is said to have impacted upward of half a million accounts, Cambridge Analytica — a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign — accessed information from as many as 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge. And last month, Facebook disclosed that attackers exposed information on nearly 50 million users."Google's breach is far smaller than Facebook's in terms of the number of accounts affected," said Mike Chapple, who teaches business analytics and cybersecurity courses at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business.Call it an odd twist of fate that the saving grace for Google right now may be that one of its products failed to take off with users. There are tools that can help make that decision though, like state-specific modeling data.Courtney Noffsinger of Hendersonville, Tennessee, is among the many parents grappling with this kind of anxiety.The mother of two has spent most of the blistering hot summer social distancing from other family members and friends. She and her husband even recently purchased an RV to go on camping trips, so they wouldn't run the risk of catching COVID-19 from crowded vacation destinations.For Noffsinger, the idea of sending her kids back to school where they’ll be surrounded by hundreds of other students and potentially exposed to the virus is daunting to say the least.“Parenting is already hard, parenting in the middle of a pandemic has been extremely difficult,” Noffsinger said as she watched her daughter scroll through TikTok.Noffsinger’s two kids haven't been to school since March and are both anxious to get back into the classroom. Her 14-year-old son Keagan is entering high school and her 11-year-old daughter Presley is entering middle school. While both children have asked their parents to return to in-person learning, Noffsinger is nervous about sending her kids back to school, especially given her daughter’s underlying asthma.“As their parents, we want to give them what they want, but we’re fearful, especially when the data keeps changing,” she said.As coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country, school districts are being faced with the reality of trying to provide education to the nation’s young people in the midst of the pandemic. While some of the country's largest districts have decided the entire fall semester will be virtual, many other districts are turning to hybrid models where students will attend school at least one or two days of school a week.COVID-19 has created a complex paradox for both parents and educators. They’re weighing the health and safety of students against the prospect of losing valuable learning and social interactions that can't be replicated online.But both parents and teachers are fearful that sending kids back into school environments will give the virus exactly want it wants, crowds of people to spread across.“Parents don’t like to hear me say it, but we will be undertaking a whole series of experiments across this country and we will have to see how those experiments turn out and be prepared to change what we’re doing to keep up with the virus,” said Doctor Williams Schaffner, who serves as a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.As COVID-19 cases continue to spike across a large swath of the country, Schaffner says parents need to be vigilant at home when it comes to instilling proper protections like wearing a mask and washing their hands. The more normalized those behaviors are at home, he says, the more likely they’ll be emulated in the classroom. And the less likely it is that the virus will spread.“Model the importance of wearing a mask, practice social distancing. If you do that in your family already, it’ll be easier for your child to understand what’s happening in school,” he said.So, where can parents turn for guidance about whether to send their kids back to school?The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created the COVID-19 Projection Machine, which gives parents an interactive map to work with. As you scroll over each state, you can see current case numbers, hospitalization rates and most importantly, the positivity rate for your state. Health experts say once a state’s positivity rate crosses 5%, parents and school districts should take note.Since the virus is not under control in the United States, Schaffner says parents, students and educators who are returning to in-person learning will need to be flexible as the year progresses.“If there’s an increase in your community and an increase related to the school itself, that school system will have to figure out if there’s a trigger point there, where they call a time out and everyone stays home and the learning becomes virtual,” Schaffner said.As for Noffsinger, she has decided to let both of her children return to school on a hybrid schedule. It’s a decision she’s told them comes with a great deal of responsibility on their part as well.“We’re fearful for their health, but also understand the importance of their education,” she said. 4518
