Uber has agreed to pay 56 current and former employees about ,900 each, or .9 million, to settle their claims of gender discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment.On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs filed paperwork in a Northern California district court that outlined how a million settlement announced in April would be divvied up. In addition to the .9 million, another .1 million will be divided among more than 480 workers, including the 56 who are receiving the other payouts.The lawsuit was filed against Uber in October 2017 by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues. The women claimed Uber used a discriminatory "stack ranking" system, alleging "female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued ... because [they] receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance."Those stack rankings were then used, in part, to determine promotions, according to the lawsuit. Uber also set employee pay based on their past compensation, which inherently disadvantages women.Fifty-six workers came forward to describe their experiences with discrimination and harassment at Uber. They are a subset of a broader class that includes about 480 women and underrepresented minorities who worked in certain software engineering jobs. (KGTV) - All Tribes Charter School in Valley Center has found a solution to the problem of kids paying too much attention to their cell phones in class.They've started using Yondr pouches to lock up phones at the beginning of the school day."These things are more distracting than hormones for teenage kids," says All Tribes Charter School Administrator Michelle Parada. "Attention to the cell phone is not attention to school."READ: Study: Separation from cellphone causes anxiety for someAccording to a Pew Research Survey in 2018, 95% of teenagers say they have a cell phone, and 45% of them say they're online "almost constantly." Fifteen percent say they've experienced cyber-bullying.Parada says that addiction has led to poor attention in class, declining grades and cyber-bullying.All that changed when the school deployed 120 Yondr pouches last spring.Every day, the kids turn off and lock their phones in a pouch when they arrive at school. They keep the locked pouch with them all day long. The pouches get unlocked by administrators at the end of the day.Predictably, the kids don't like it."I like having my phone, having easy access," says Senior Melani Maxcy. "And with this thing, I can't do it.""This school didn't need it really," says Willow Robinson. "Yeah, we'd post every once in a while in class, but that's when we were just sitting around and talking."Parada says it was also tricky getting parents to adjust, many of whom like to keep in touch with their students throughout the day."They're probably the biggest perpetrators of calling their kids during the day. Constantly," says Parada. "They're constantly calling, messaging or texting their kids."Parada tells parents if there is an emergency and they need to reach their student, they can still call the school office. She says administrators are usually able to reach a student within a couple of minutes.Despite the push-back, Parada says the new policy is helping. Grades and attention are up, and cyber-bullying has gone down."All of the picture taking, video taking, SnapChat, Instagram has stopped," says Parada, noting that the kids can't post if they don't have a phone. "Kids are compelled to take pictures, to take videos and start shooting them out to other people."She adds it has also cut down on disruptions in class and food deliveries to the school.A spokesperson for Yonder tells 10News that demand for the product has grown in Southern California through the last year. In San Diego, there are now four schools using the pouches: All Tribes Charter School, Caliber Beta Academy, Mark Twain High School and the San Diego County ROP.The schools pay a fee to lease the pouches and the unlocking tool. Two people have been killed in an explosion at a Veteran's Affair hospital in Connecticut, according to WTNH-TV and The New Haven Register.A VA spokesperson told WTNH that the explosion at the West Haven hospital was caused by a steam valve. The explosion occurred in a building that was not housing patients. Those who were killed were not patients at the hospital.According to The Associated Press, state and federal investigators are responding to the incident. (KGTV) - As the dual-threat of wildfires and climate change grows, one company says an old method of home building could be the answer to both problems.Rebecca Tasker is the CEO of Simple Construct. Her company builds homes out of straw bales.And, yes, she's heard all of the jokes."I've heard every single 'Three Little Pigs' joke you can think of," Tasker says. "Some good ones, some not so good ones."But the idea of straw bale homes is serious to Tasker."These homes, once they're plastered, are more fire-resistant than conventional homes," she says.The secret is in the construction. Tasker uses high-grade straw bales that are packed solid. She says that makes them like phone books, so they smolder instead of igniting in flames. Also, the plaster her company uses to cover the walls is made from dirt, clay, and more straw. The mixture gives the homes a 1-2 hour fire-resistance rating. Most homes only get a 30-minute rating."The oxygen can't get in to burn," Tasker says.In addition to the fire resistance, Tasker says the homes are environmentally friendly. The thick bales provide a two-foot layer of natural insulation. That blocks sound to 50 decibels. It also keeps the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer."We're actually sequestering carbon in the walls," she says of the process. "We're helping to reverse climate change with these buildings. And as people start to put those two things together, we're getting a lot of business."Tasker says straw homes have been around for more than 100 years and came to California in 1996. Now, she estimates more than 60 are in use in San Diego County.She says the size of the bales can be a drawback, as it takes up valuable square footage on smaller lots. She also doesn't recommend building any higher than two stories.As for bugs or rodents, Tasker says they can't get into the walls because of how densely packed the bales are.Even the interior walls, which are typically made from traditional wood and studs, are packed with the straw/clay mixture.The construction price is comparable to conventional homes with similar insulation and efficiency ratings. Tasker thinks the idea will catch on as more people become more aware of the way these homes can help the planet.As for the little pigs jokes, she wrote a book called "The Story of the Fourth Little Pig." She uses it when she makes presentations to schools and children's' groups to help explain the concept. 2482
