NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- A Noblesville, Indiana woman says a trip to the spa with her daughters ended with a serious infection and a long stay at the hospital.Jennifer White said she got the pedicure nearly two weeks ago at “Nails and Lounge” in Noblesville.Over the next two days, White said she noticed her foot start swelling and turning purple and decided to go to the emergency room.She was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday with a severe infection and she’s been there for nearly a week.“I was worried I could possibly lose my toe. I could lose my foot,” said White. “I’m out of work … all for that 35 minutes of getting a pedicure.”White says the doctors tell her that the scrapings on her foot probably caused a small incision which allowed an infection to enter her foot.“I’m still here and they’re saying it’s due to the fact that I went to the nail salon… unclean, unsanitary and it’s made the infection settle in my foot,” said White.According to the Indiana Administrative Code, the use of razor devices to shave, reduce or remove calluses or corns is prohibited at spas in the state.Nails and Lounge’s manager says they did not use any prohibited devices and that they sanitize and dispose of all tools according to state law. She says they also bleach the pedicure tubs after each use, but have ordered plastic liners for each tub because of this experience.The spa manager denies that their pedicure caused the infection but says they are open to working with White to pay for her medical bills.  1525

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – A man in Massachusetts is taking extreme measures to ensure his Trump campaign sign isn’t tampered with.John Oliveria of New Bedford says his sign started disappearing from his yard and after going through six, the Navy veteran was fed up.Oliveria, a member of the New Bedford School Committee, has now put electric wire around the sign in his front yard and he tells WJAR it has certainly sent a message to thieves.After two weeks with the fence, the Republican says the sign has stood its ground.Oliveria says Americans have to be able to respect each other, despite political differences. Otherwise, he argues nothing will get accomplished.Oliveria believes the sign supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid was specifically singled out, because he also has another sign encouraging people to vote, but that one was never touched.For those wondering if putting electric fencing in residential areas is legal in the state, WJAR reports that it depends on the laws and regulations in each community. NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. EMS responded and pronounced the mother dead at the scene.Later Wednesday, police announced Aponte's adult son was arrested in connection with her death.Police believe Steven Castro, 40, struck his mother in the head with an object during a "jealous rage."It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sparked the man's rage.Castro is now facing charges including murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom at WPIX. 949

New spikes in COVID-19 cases have reinforced the importance of basic disinfecting and cleaning our homes to stop the novel coronavirus spread.But how do we know that the cleaners we have are effective in killing COVID-19 and other viruses?"One of the things that's important to know: Is there is a lot of good evidence that the coronavirus is one of the easiest types to kill?" said Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Patrick Larkin.Yes, he said. He believes most household cleaners will destroy the virus.He said the best chemicals to use for disinfecting are, bleach, ammonia, and alcohol. However, he does warn that precautions be taken with alcohol concentrations."For example with isopropyl alcohol, you need at least a 50 percent solution; and ethanol [or ethyl] alcohol, you want at least 60 percent," he said.But, take note -- there also are guidelines for how you should clean, so it can be the most effective."CDC guidelines say you should clean the surface with soap and water first, and then apply your sanitizing or disinfectant solution," said retired Certified Industrial Hygienist Tom Samson. "Leave it on for at least one minute, and then you can rinse it off."Samson said not all household cleaners are the same, and do not have the same contact-surface time that is required. He recommends reading the labels of the cleaner you intend to use.Larkin and Samson said it is easy to make your own cleaners at home. However, be cautious about mixing chemicals, and be aware what you are cleaning with."The chemistry of mixing a chlorine-based cleaner with an ammonia-based cleaner can be deadly to those in the immediate area," said Samson. "The reaction of these two cleaners is to release chlorine products into the surrounding environment, in some cases, enough to cause severe injury or death.
