A recent study appears to show a person’s blood type might indicate whether they will develop severe respiratory failure if they contract COVID-19.The study sequenced genomes of 1,600 COVID-19 patients in Spain and Italy who had been hospitalized with severe respiratory failure and compared the results to DNA sequences of 2,205 healthy subjects.Results appear to show that people with type A blood had a higher chance of developing severe respiratory failure as compared to people with O blood type. The study claims there may be a “protective effect” for blood group O. However this study has not been peer-reviewed yet and the exact kind or extent of “protective effect” is not known.In early June, the site 23andme.com released results from information gathered from 750,000 participants who identified they had COVID-19. The genealogy company said their research suggests a similar effect in people with O blood type. “Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said.They said while there was a significant difference in those with O blood type, there “appeared to be little differences in susceptibility among the other blood types.”However, some are questioning this idea that people with type O blood are protected. Laura Cooling is the director of immunohematology at the University of Michigan. She noted that the idea that having type O blood is protective doesn’t match with current COVID-19 infection rates.Type O blood is usually more prevalent among African Americans, according to the American Red Cross, yet new information from the CDC and states indicate African Americans have experienced disproportionately high COVID-19 infection rates. A new study has found that those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who didn’t, reports the Chicago Tribune.The research was led by University of California neurologist Claudia Kawas who tracked 1,700 nonagenarians enrolled in the 90+ study, which began in 2003.According to researchers, those who drank roughly two glasses of beer or wine a day were 18 percent less likely to experience premature death.The findings mean that, according to the research, drinking alcohol increased longevity more than exercise.The study found that participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day cut their risk of early death by 11 percent.And good news for coffee lovers. Participants who drank two cups of coffee a day also increased longevity by 10 percent.The study also found that people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people. 904

A ten-year-old girl who was the subject of an AMBER Alert Monday has been found dead near her home. Kodie B. Dutcher was reported missing Monday afternoon, and a search of her home in Baraboo, Wisconsin found evidence that the girl threatened self-harm. The AMBER Alert message said Dutcher was suspected of taking "an unknown amount of pills and may be suicidal." The girl left behind her shoes and cell phone.Community members gathered to look for her Monday night and again Tuesday morning. No word at this time who found her body. Lt. A software flaw is being blamed for showing a positive COVID-19 test result incorrectly for more than two dozen tests. University of Kentucky laboratory scientists say they were inspecting and reviewing raw data from a testing platform when they became concerned about discrepancies in the data. They believe the testing platform, Thermo Fisher, which was authorized for emergency use by the FDA, had a software flaw that might result in false positives.After re-testing the samples using another platform, scientists confirmed that the tests initially reported as positive for COVID-19 were negative. The flaw was only found in one of the four testing platforms that UK's clinical laboratory uses.Every patient who received incorrect results is being notified about the issue. No negative results changed. UK HealthCare also has notified Thermo Fisher Scientific and the FDA."For anyone tested at UK HealthCare, it is important to know that the vast majority of results have not changed," said UK Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Mark Newman. "Since these very astute employees discovered this issue, we have taken extensive measures to validate each test in question and worked diligently to contact all parties – the vendor, the FDA -- and most importantly, our patients and providers."UK HealthCare says they are working with local health departments and the Kentucky Department of Public Health to correct all data."UK's clinical laboratory has performed more than 30,000 COVID-19 tests since March and only a very small percentage of tests have been affected by this software defect," Newman said. A massive fire broke out in Queens, New York on Thursday morning — a blaze that has injured at least 12 people, including seven firefighters.NBC New York reports that 25 fire departments responded to the fire, which started in the Sunnyside neighborhood in Queens. Six businesses were damaged by the fire.None of the injuries are minor injuries and not expected to be life-threatening.One of the buildings affected by the fire experienced a collapse during the incident, according to fire officials.
