Before last week, membership in the National Rifle Association meant gaining access to a broad range of discounts. From special rates on auto insurance policies to cheaper flights when you booked through its website, the NRA's discount program offered a lot of perks. But in the wake of a massacre at a Florida high school on February 14, activists flooded social media with calls to end corporate partnerships with America's most powerful gun lobby.Since Thursday, more than a dozen brands severed ties with the organization. In a statement, the National Rifle Association called the decisions "a shameful display of political and civic cowardice.""In time, these brands will be replaced by others who recognize that patriotism and determined commitment to Constitutional freedoms are characteristics of a marketplace they very much want to serve," the statement said.NRA members still have access to other perks, such as a free gun-owner insurance plan and options to save on travel costs. But the listings on the organization's "Member Benefits" page have dwindled. Here's how it all went down.Thursday, February 22The First National Bank of Omaha said it will stop issuing an NRA-branded Visa card. BEIJING — For more than two months, the 11 million residents of Wuhan endured a strict lockdown as coronavirus raced around the city in central China. Now, some are letting loose en masse at rocking nighttime pool parties at a popular amusement park chain. The Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park reopened in late June, and the crowds have picked up this month.Wuhan was the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in China and saw the most deaths. The region was completely locked down between late January and early April — people were restricted from leaving or entering the city, and those in town were restricted from leaving their homes. The spread of the disease has been all but eradicated in China, though isolated outbreaks pop up sporadically. 749

BERLIN (AP) — German pharma giant Bayer says it’s paying up to .9 billion to settle a lawsuit over subsidiary Monsanto’s weedkiller Roundup.Monsanto has faced numerous lawsuits over claims it causes cancer. In a statement Wednesday, Bayer said it was also paying up .22 billion to settle two further cases, one involving PCB in water. The Leverkusen, Germany-based company said the Roundup settlement would “bring closure to approximately 75%” of the current 125,000 filed and unfiled claims. The company said the settlement also puts a mechanism in place to resolve potential future claims efficiently. It said the agreement is subject to approval by Judge Vince Chhabria of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.“First and foremost, the Roundup settlement is the right action at the right time for Bayer to bring a long period of uncertainty to an end,” said Werner Baumann, Chief Executive Officer of Bayer. “It resolves most current claims and puts in place a clear mechanism to manage risks of potential future litigation. It is financially reasonable when viewed against the significant financial risks of continued, multi-year litigation and the related impacts to our reputation and to our business. The decision to resolve the Roundup litigation enables us to focus fully on the critical supply of healthcare and food. It will also return the conversation about the safety and utility of glyphosate-based herbicides to the scientific and regulatory arena and to the full body of science.” 1532
