A Kentucky high school teacher on Tuesday ousted an incumbent state lawmaker who had a role in passing a controversial pension bill this year that sparked outrage from teachers across the state.Republican voters chose Travis Brenda, a high school math teacher, over House Majority Floor Leader Jonathan Shell, who was first elected in 2012.Brenda bested Shell by a narrow margin of 123 votes In Tuesday's Republican primary for House District 71st, according to unofficial results posted to the Kentucky State Board of Elections.This past spring, Kentucky teachers held rallies at the state Capitol for more funding and to oppose a controversial pension bill, Senate Bill 151, which, among other initiatives, prevents changes to annual cost-of-living adjustments and limits the number of sick days teachers can put toward their retirement.Shell had helped turn SB 151, which had been about sewage services, into a pension overhaul and voted in support of the bill. The bill was quickly passed in the House and the Senate without allowing the public to read it, and then sent to GOP Gov. Matt Bevin to sign the bill on April 11.During the campaign, Brenda used his experience as a teacher to make the point that he's not a politician and he understands the importance of funding education. A dispute is brewing between city officials in Denton, Texas and the parents of a 10-year-old boy with autism after body cam footage was released last week from an incident in April showing a school resource officer body slamming the boy, WFAA-TV reported.According to an account of events given to WFAA, the boy, Thomas Brown, poked other students and was ignoring his teachers when a school resource officer was called to the special needs classroom. The boy then backed into a cubby as school staff and the officer closed in. Video of the incident shows the officer picking up the boy as the boy began kicking and screaming. Moments later, the boy was brought to the ground, and placed in handcuffs. Thomas' parents said the use of force was "excessive.""I see a little boy hiding," mother Emily Brown told WFAA. "Not doing anything that's an imminent serious harm to someone else."Brown said she realized just how serious the incident was after she got home and noticed bruises on her son's body. Both the Denton school district and city of Denton both disagreed with Thomas' parents."The safety of all of our students is a top priority and we have protocols in place to ensure this," the Denton Independent School District said in a statement. "In this instance, protocol was followed, with the school resource officer making the determination, after all other efforts to deescalate the situation proved ineffective, that the student was a detriment to his own safety and that of the other students and staff."In the city's statement to WFAA, it claimed that Thomas "was posing a serious threat of injury to himself or others."According to ABC News, the Browns plan on suing the school district and city over the incident.  1791

A city in China is warning consumers after a sample of frozen chicken wings from Brazil has tested positive for the coronavirus.A statement from the city of Shenzhen says a “surface sample of frozen chicken wings” tested positive. Coronavirus testing was done on anyone who may have had contact with the product, and so far tests have come back negative, according to city officials.Authorities are tracing related products from the same brand that have already been sold, and have disinfected the area where the contaminated chicken wings were stored, according to CNN.The city warns people about buying imported frozen meat and aquatic products and to take steps to reduce the risk of contracting the coronavirus.The CDC and WHO say the chances of catching the coronavirus from food is low.“Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that handling food or consuming food is associated with COVID-19,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states on their website.However, they continue by stating it is possible a person could touch a surface that has the virus on it and then touch their mouth or nose, potentially spreading the virus.The CDC recommends safe food practices like washing hands after touching food packaging and food products, and cooking meat thoroughly. 1290

A key forecasting model that’s been cited by the White House and state officials now predicts the COVID-19 death toll in the United States will surpass 410,000 by January 1.The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington released its latest forecast Friday, saying the U.S. and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere should prepare for a seasonal rise in COVID-19 cases.COVID-19 has already killed at least 186,800 people in the U.S., according to an ongoing tally from Johns Hopkins University.“I would call the surge in the winter that we’re forecasting a second wave,” said IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray in a call with reporters Friday.The IHME says COVID-19 has followed seasonal patterns similar to pneumonia and if that correlation continues to hold, northern countries can anticipate more cases in the late fall and winter months.“The worst is yet to come,” warned Murray. “I don’t think perhaps that’s a surprise, although I think there’s a natural tendency as we’re a little bit in the Northern Hemisphere summer, to think maybe the epidemic is going away.”The IHME’s prediction of 410,000 U.S. deaths by Jan. 1 is its most likely scenario, but it also provided a worst-case scenario. If mask usage stays the same and states continue to relax social distancing requirements, the IHME model predicts over 620,000 Americans could die from the virus by the new year.The IHME’s best-case scenario, where mask usage is universal and governments impose social distancing requirements, shows more than 286,000 people dying across the nation by the end of the year.“We are facing the prospect of a deadly December, especially in Europe, Central Asia, and the United States,” said Murray in a statement. “But the science is clear and the evidence irrefutable: mask-wearing, social distancing, and limits to social gatherings are vital to helping prevent transmission of the virus.”Globally, the IHME predicts that nearly 770,000 lives could be saved between now and Jan. 1 through proven measures such as mask-wearing and social distancing.Across the world, deaths expected by Jan. 1 total 2.8 million, about 1.9 million more from now until the end of the year, the IHME says.
