(KGTV) - The holiday blockbuster season is upon us and Warner Bros' is hoping their long-awaited "Justice League" movie knocks out the competition. But judging by the reception so far, DC Comics' favorite heroes may face an uphill battle with critics. As the movie's release near theaters across the country, reviews have started to pour in ranging from excitement to tempered satisfaction to complete disgust.RELATED: 'Wonder Woman 2' will be released six weeks ahead of scheduleWhat's is about?"Justice League" sees heroes of the DC Comics world team up to take on a world-ending threat from Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons - who are hunting for three "Mother Boxes" hidden across the globe. In the wake of Superman's death, Bruce Wayne (Batman) sees this threat on the horizon. Alongside Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), the pair seeks to enlist the help of three other superhumans to put an end to Steppenwolf's ambitions.Critics' response..The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy was one of those who found themselves letdown - completely.McCarthy called the movie a "chore," adding, "the virtually humor-free script by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon (who was brought on to complete directing duties after Zack Snyder had to leave for family reasons) less resembles deft narrative scene-setting than it does the work of a bored casino dealer rotely distributing cards around a table."The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw echoed that same distaste, calling out the film's post-credit scenes (of which there are two) and saying, "the great revelation is very laborious and solemn and the tiresome post-credits sting is a microcosm of the film’s disappointment."RELATED: Fans cheer for Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot at Justice League San Diego Comic-Con appearanceBut not everyone was completely disappointed after the credits rolled. From Polygon writer Julia Alexander: "Justice League is a rare, anomalous jewel that pops up every few years in cinema: It can’t be described as a good movie, but it’s enjoyable at times to sit through."Though most reviews tried to establish the thoughts likely to run through movie-goers' heads: Is it better than the other DCU movies?"It’s not good, per se, and it’s definitely not 'Wonder Woman.' That said, it’s better than you may expect, a mostly tolerable movie made occasionally enjoyable by a few lively performances, one good fight sequence, and a solid punchline or two," Consequence of Sound's?Allison Shoemaker writes. However, one review that has been making the rounds may sum up the majority of responses to the DC's latest superhero adventure. The Atlantic's David Sims offers a slight silver-lining but straight-forward take, writing, "By the end of the film, some of his harsher edges have been sanded off; the same should go for the DC Comics universe moving forward." But he goes on to call "Justice League" a "pilot episode—it’s half-formed, overstuffed, and narratively a chore." 2972

(KGTV) -- SeaWorld continues to feel the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting a dramatic loss in revenue on Monday.SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. revealed troubling earnings numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year. When it comes to attendance, SeaWorld parks saw only 300,000 guests during the second quarter of this year -- a drop of 6.2 million from Q2 in 2019.According to the earnings report, SeaWorld had 6 million in cash/cash equivalents as of June 30. The company had 0 million on April 30.The pandemic forced the closure of the company’s parks, including SeaWorld San Diego, for several months, leading to a decline of 7.2 million guests from the first six months of 2019, the company stated.Following the park closures earlier this year, SeaWorld was forced to furlough 90 percent of its staff.A phased reopening of some parks began in early June, and overall, a total of seven parks were open for 98 operating days compared with all 12 parks open for 861 days during the second quarter of 2019. The reopened parks operated at limited capacity, limited hours and/or limited days.As for SeaWorld San Diego park, an opening date has not been set. SeaWorld said it is "in regular contact with state and local authorities and sincerely looks forward to opening in San Diego and welcoming back its guests as soon as it's safe and permitted to do so."The company said it also does not plan on opening the Aquatica waterpark in Chula Vista this year.SeaWorld Entertainment’s interim CEO Marc Swanson said in the earnings report: "I am extremely proud of our team's performance during this unprecedented and challenging time. Together, we have taken significant actions to reduce our costs, carefully manage our cash flows, fortify our balance sheet and liquidity position, implement enhanced health and safety protocols for our employees, guests and animals and successfully re-open and welcome guests back to nine of our twelve parks."Not all the news for SeaWorld was bad in the second quarter, as the company “helped rescue over 430 animals and surpassed 37,200 total rescues over its history.”City News Service contributed to this report 2263

(KGTV) -- Rios Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District is one of only a few districts that took advantage of the state waiver program to reopen for in-person learning this fall and is the largest in the state to qualify for one.More than 200 students attend Rios in-person, five days a week.Principal Liz Loether says despite low case numbers, they're seeing the effects of Covid, and they're trying their best to help students cope as they get back to school, but still face the challenges presented by the pandemic.Loether says those symptoms are showing up as social-emotional difficulties, reactions to frustration, levels of patience, and learning loss.At Rios they've leveraged the resource of extra space to spread out their more than two hundred kids. They have teachers rotate instead of kids to minimize contact outside cohorts.Another resource is technology. Rios was the first computer science elementary school in the country, and several years ago, the superintendent made it a priority for each of the 17-thousand students in CVUSD to have a Chromebook computer. It proved to be crucial foresight when the pandemic left many other districts scrambling to get tablets and computers into students' hands. It also meant none of the money schools got from the government was needed to buy computers."It did give Cajon Valley an advantage," says Board of Trustees Vice-President Jim Miller. Miller also says to qualify for the waiver to reopen, significant planning and coordination were required, with parents and with the teachers' union. Both Miller and the superintendent, Dr. David Miyashira, talked about trust and a sense of the community "buying-in" to the push to go back to school in person this fall.In CVUSD schools, two out of three students qualify for free or reduced-cost meals, and many of the parents are frontline or essential workers. Many Cajon Valley schools are open in a hybrid model, but there are several like Rios which are open five days. Some of the schools are providing full-day free daycare as well for frontline workers and for school staff.Roughly 20% of families have opted to do online learning full-time, but overall, the feedback they've received, he says, has been very positive. He adds that they've heard from districts across the country who have asked for advice on how to replicate their model successfully."I'm personally very proud of Cajon Valley," says Miller. 2441
