So much has changed from just one week before the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown hit New York City.Though a lot has changed, the NYPD’s “Options” program still persists.“Options” bridges relationships between police and some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods.With a rise in shootings and violence, it is needed now more than ever.Just a few weeks before a worldwide pandemic and months before nationwide unrest over racial injustice and police brutality, there was NYC youth engaging in candid conversations with members of the NYPD.The program has been two years running and bridges the gap between the police and the city’s dynamic youth.“This is the new era of neighborhood policing, and we see that NYC has to open up a lot more and really start listening to the youth of tomorrow,” Det. Jason Anazagasty said.A virtual reality program was also created, scripted and voiced by “Options” teens.It includes real-life scenarios that play out through a virtual reality headset.Their choices on how to handle cyberbullying, violence on the streets and so much are on full display — as are the consequences of those choices.Det. Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson called the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia store last week "reprehensible" and promised to take action so that it doesn't happen again.A store manager called the police because the two men were sitting in the store without placing an order. They were arrested for trespassing. The customers said they were waiting for another man to arrive. That person arrived at the store as they were being arrested.A Starbucks spokesperson says the manager in the store who called police is no longer working in that store, although she would not comment if she is working at another location.Johnson said there would be more training for staff on the issue of "unconscious bias.""I've been very focused on understanding what guidelines and what training ever let this happen," he said. "What happened was wrong and we will fix it."Johnson had already posted apologies on the company's website. He said the company wanted to "express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right." He said he hoped to meet with the two men in person to make a face-to-face apology. He was in Philadelphia on Monday when he conducted the interview on Good Morning America."Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling," he said on the blog post.Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney issued his own statement calling the incident "appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018." He added that the apology from Starbucks "is not enough" and that he would ask the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to examine the firm's policies and procedures and whether there should be bias training for its employees. SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A fire of undetermined origin engulfed a mobile home at an East County trailer park Monday, displacing a family of six.The non-injury blaze in the 2500 block of Sweetwater Road in Spring Valley was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to San Miguel Fire & Rescue.It took firefighters about 20 minutes to subdue the flames, the agency reported.The American Red Cross was called in to help the three adults and three children who lived in the gutted residence arrange for alternate lodging.
