SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans played the role of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday as they delivered some holiday cheer to seniors in need downtown.Volunteers from the non-profits Serving Seniors and Friends of Downtown teamed up to deliver bags filled with essentials to seniors. Bags were filled with items including food, blankets, fresh towels, and other care products.Organizers of the event say that the seniors they serve don't have families or anyone to visit them and, in some cases, this is the only present they receive during the holidays."Serving seniors sent us pictures last year and we got to see seniors receiving them and it brought tears to your eyes," Lori Carpenter, with Friends of Downtown, said.More than 200 bags were handed out during Saturday's event. 786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents of San Diego County are still disposing of more waste than the average Californian, according to a report by the research group Equinox Project at the Center for Sustainable Energy.According to the report, San Diego continues to dispose of more waste per capita than any of the other major urban counties throughout the state.The latest numbers, which came out in 2016, show that each San Diegan tossed out an average of 5.5 pounds of trash per day in 2016.Within San Diego County, residents in Del Mar disposed of the most trash at 16.5 pounds per capita.Residents of Imperial Beach, however, disposed of the least trash at 3.3 pounds per person followed by Chula Vista at 3.7 pounds per capita.The numbers show that three jurisdictions, Solana Beach, Lemon Grove and Coronado, decreased their waste disposal in 2016.Residents of within the city of San Diego disposed of 5.9 pounds of waste per person per day.The numbers below show how much trash per capita jurisdictions around the county disposed of: 1052

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restitution payments were sent this week to the victim of an investor who stole .5 million, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said Friday in a news release. Shawn Heffernan of the Heffernan Group took the investments of 15 people “who were susceptible to fraud due to inattention or advanced age,” the DA’s office said. Heffernan spent the money on personal items, including a lavish wedding and a Maserati. In 2018, Heffernan pleaded guilty to 29 criminal counts including elder fraud, grand theft, forgery, and making a fraudulent tax return. He sentenced to nine years in prison. The judge ordered Heffernan to repay the victims, 0,000 of which has been secured, the DA’s office reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Results of an audit show the City of San Diego has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in liability claims.From 2010 to 2018, the city had 20,000 liability claims, which has resulted in 0 million in public liability costs. That translates to about million per year to settle or resolve these claims.At the top of that list, as far as the number of cases, involves city vehicle accidents with 2,075 claims, where the city paid .7 million. Also included in this list are trips and falls, with 931 claims and the city paid .7 million towards those liability costs.The City Auditor’s Office also made recommendations to reduce the number of claims. When it comes to trips and falls, they suggested the city focus on fixing the sidewalks in high pedestrian areas. Their data has found people are four times as likely to trip and fall in those areas of the damage to the sidewalk.When it comes to accidents involving city drivers, they believe there needs to be more training for them.The report will now be forwarded over to the City Council for review. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County is taking another jab at tackling the housing crisis. In a press conference Wednesday, Supervisor Dianne Jacob revealed a set of pre-approved plans to build granny flats throughout the county. Homeowners can choose between plans for a 600 or 1,200 square foot designs. The program can help homeowners save up to ,000 in design and permit fees. Tom Tanner recently built a granny flat on his home in Lakeside. "I was looking for that additional income to offset the cost of everything," said Tanner. "If it’s doable, yea, do it it all comes down to the numbers, how much they can afford what they’re going to get back."The county is currently working on developing four other designs for homeowners to choose from.
