ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida: home to green palms, sunny skies and long lines for early voting.“We're seeing a lot of people who were actively engaged,” said Dr. Larry Walker, a professor with the Department of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at the University of Central Florida, who specializes in race and voting rights.Dr. Walker said, looking at state data, he expects a higher Black voter turnout this year in Florida, a state where they account for 14% of eligible voters.“I think we're going to see increasingly more Black voters that didn't vote in 2016, weren't ready to vote, to vote in this election,” Dr. Walker said.But will they in other battleground states? Some Black voters wonder.“I think our culture doesn't vote enough,” said Wisconsin voter Raven Ewing.“To be honest, I don’t know,” said Florida voter Joanna Joseph. “I really don’t know.”American University decided to find out. Researchers there surveyed 1,200 Black voters in the battleground states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Nurses are a critical group to get on board with taking and recommending COVID-19 vaccines.They're already the number one trusted worker by Americans, according to a new Gallup poll. And they’re seen to have the highest honesty and ethics values.“What I am advocating or stressing is that nurses need to know exactly how the mRNA vaccines work,” said Dr. Ernest Grant, President of the American Nurses Association (ANA). “You know, because they're going to be needed to help persuade the public that they need to take the vaccine as well.”Grant isn't just asking nurses to be vaccine advocates. He’s one himself. He took part in the modern vaccine trial.Grant says he believes he got the vaccine, not the placebo, because of the fatigue he felt after the second shot.He says vaccines come at a time that will not only save lives, but also keep more nurses from leaving the profession due to burnout and stress.“It’s tough to go to work to work 12 hours or 16 hour shifts a day and have, you know, maybe a death every other hour or so,” said Grant.Nurses are also losing their lives. About 400 in the U.S. have died as a result of providing care for COVID-19 patients, according to the ANA. 1197

On Wednesday, Facebook announced that it launched a million grant program to support Black-owned businesses.Back in June, the social media giant committed a 0 million investment that was aimed at helping U.S. Black-owned businesses, creators, and nonprofits.On Wednesday, the company began accepting applications for the grants.To apply for a grant, the company must be a majority Black-owned for-profit business, have less than 50 employees, been in business for over a year, and experienced challenges from COVID-19, Facebook said.The grants comprise of ,500 in cash and ,500 in optional advertising credits to use on Facebook.
