CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s appearance on a website list of applicants seeking to reopen schools was determined to be a mistake, the district told ABC 10News.CVESD never applied for a waiver, stating on their Facebook page on Thursday night:“We are aware of a ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ fraudulently being listed as an applicant for a school reopening waiver. Our District has NOT applied for a waiver to reopen our schools. As a part of the waiver process, we would consult with labor units, parents and community organizations first. Our District is working with investigative authorities to determine how documents were submitted purporting ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ is a waiver applicant with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.”District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin Aug. 31 with distance learning. On Friday, a district spokesperson told ABC 10News that the listing was the result of an error made by an independent charter school that selected the Chula Vista district name on the San Diego County Health and Human Services website. The spokesperson said the HHSA informed the district of the mistake and the website has since been corrected.Meanwhile, at least 27 schools in San Diego County have already been given the green light to begin in-person learning, with dozens of other schools still waiting for approval. Those schools that have been approved have several things in common, including the ability to maximize outdoor space. The Rancho Santa Fe School District is on the list of those that can bring students back to campus, and Superintendent Donna Tripi said preparing for this was not an easy task."We had to work on the class groupings, we had to do training for staff, training for parents, we had to write up all the protocols and really think out every move that everyone makes on campus,” Tripi said.San Diego County was removed for California's virus monitoring list on Aug. 18, beginning the 14-day countdown the county needs to stay off the list in order to reopen K-12 schools in-person.On-campus classes could resume as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the school district. 2188

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Popular South Bay brewery Novo Brazil is expanding its footprint in Chula Vista this month.Novo Brazil Brewery will hold a grand opening for its new brewpub on Dec. 11 in Otay Ranch Town Center. The 12,000-square-foot spot can host more than 950 guests and features a 300-seat restaurant, full bar, indoor and outdoor beer garden, two 14-foot-by-10-foot televisions, shuffleboard tables, and a kid's area with ping-pong tables, video games, and other activities.RELATED: Ballast Point purchased by Chicago-based brewerOn the production side, the brewpub boasts 60 taps with about 40 of those dispensing beer and the rest a combination of Novo's kombucha and hard seltzer creations. Canned cocktails are also in the works for the brewery. In addition to the restaurant and bar, the location will also house a five-barrel brewing system and fermentation tanks.“Our goal is to shift the axis of brewing tourism to southern San Diego attracting downtown and northern San Diego residents and tourists to experience our work and our community. With other local breweries we can put Chula Vista on the map as an official destination of the beer and gastronomic map,” said Tiago Carneiro, founder of Novo Brazil Brewery.Carneiro says they intend to brew more than 100 different beers using the massive system in their first year alone. The new brewery will allow Novo to brew specialty beers and test new recipes. RELATED: San Diego craft beer study shows craft brewery, economic impact growthA small retail section inside to brewpub will also offer Brazilian products, like coffee, to buy.To capture Brazil's colorful flair, Novo's owners hired Brazilian architect, Gustavo Penna, to help develop the brewpub's design. The result is a black and white wave pattern across the building — inside and out— representative of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. The bar, which owners say is the longest in the South Bay, curls around the facility and guests can kick back in furniture made from Brazilian wood around unique murals from Brazilian artists.“Our story began in Brazil, where we learned the art of brewing and created the most awarded brewery in South America," Carneiro said. "We believe our difference is our Brazilian way of showing the colorful culture and happiness of four homelands. We were fortunate to find a sister city in South Bay, named after our hometown of Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), where we were warmly welcomed by the entire community."RELATED: Craft beer scene brewing in Chula VistaCarneiro says that Brazilian style of brewing is what earned his family the most awarded beers in Brazil and 17 international beer awards just three years after opening their first South Bay spot.Novo's original location also continues to serve fans on Lane Avenue in Chula Vista. 2825

China has announced plans to put tariffs of 25 percent on US products worth billion, the latest move in an escalating trade war.The Chinese government said in a statement Wednesday that the taxes would be imposed on August 23.The US products in line for tariffs include chemical items and diesel fuel. The world's top two economies have repeatedly sparred over trade in recent months, in what experts warn may become a devastating cycle of retaliation. On Tuesday, the Trump administration unveiled its own list of roughly billion worth of imports from China that will be hit with 25 percent tariffs. 624

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — An upset truck owner is making a plea for tips after a man was recorded dousing his Toyota Tacoma with a destructive substance. On Falcon Peak Street in Otay Ranch, Marc Galvez stumbled upon a very odd sight when he went to his truck Monday night: A liquid he thought was a milkshake. "When I hosed it down, I could see the paint coming down. I knew it wasn't a milkshake. I got angry and pissed off," said Galvez.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodA check of his Ring camera footage revealed the culprit. Just before 10 p.m., a man with "USA" written on the back of his shirt was recorded walking in the driveway, before walking away.
