SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. She said if they could, they would take even more than the planned 160 people next year to make up for the two lost trips in 2020, but that would be dependent on funding, which isn’t possible right now. 3487

Now, financial experts are saying it won't last forever and advising clients to prepare for a downturn."You have to expect at some point, we're due," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "I think everybody's almost forgotten, look at earlier in the year, how sharp the markets broke back in February. So it wouldn't be unusual to see any of those declines coming up later this year or early next year."Brewster says he doesn't expect anything as drastic as 2008, but he still says investors should take a few steps to safeguard their earnings and even make the downturn work in your favor.A lot of it, he says, depends on how close you are to retirement."When you look at the year to year returns, they're all over the board. When you look at the 20-30 year returns they're very close," says Brewster. "If you're younger and have 20-30 year horizons, the day to day gyrations are almost noise to you. But if you're getting closer to retirement or in retirement, then you have to be more careful."'Brewster looked up numbers from the S&P 500 for the last 20 years. He says someone who invested ,000 in 1998 would have lost about ,300 after the crash in 2008. But if they kept their money in until 2018, that same ,000 investment would now be worth more than ,000.He says older investors should be more conservative with their portfolios. Younger investors should increase how much they invest if the market falls, to take advantage of lower prices.As for when the correction could come, Brewster says it's too tough to predict. But he says to watch out for "triggering" events that could rattle the market, some of which may already be happening. (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Del Cerro say an intersection near their homes is a hot spot for accidents and speeding, with the latest incident occurring Monday night.The streets and intersection in question are Madra Avenue and Del Cerro Boulevard. Denisse Newell took cell phone video during the aftermath of Monday’s accident. Newell says she’s reached out to City of San Diego officials to ask that something be done to make drivers slow down.Another neighbor, Emily Broadwater, says she was involved in an accident at the intersection in 2018 after a man didn’t stop at the stop sign. Her minivan was totaled.Newell says her dog was also hit by a speeding car and survived the accident. Her husband has stopped walking their children to school after multiple close calls. Neighbors worry that the next time it’ll be a person. The women say they’d like the city to implement like speed bumps, a stoplight or roundabouts to get drivers to slow down.ABC 10News reached out to San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman’s office, who represents the district. SAN DIEGO (KTGV)— A homeless man and convicted rapist accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an East Village bar in November faced his accuser in San Diego Superior Court. Gary Cushinberry, who's accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and attempted rape, pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered all media to conceal the victim’s identity, and to refer to her as Jane Doe. Jane Doe took the stand and recalled what happened on the evening of November 5th. She said she was at Amplified Kitchen and Beer Garden in East Village, celebrating with some colleagues.After having a few drinks, she headed to her car. She admitted she was drunk at the time, and her memory was hazy. But she did remember the moment her bottom touch the ground.“He was touching underneath the blanket, and I just remember being shocked. Uh, next he further proceeded to put his hand in my pants,” Doe said. While he attacked her on the ground underneath a dirty blanket, he tried to drug her with what she thought was a meth pipe, Doe continued. Detective Carlos Munoz of the San Diego Police Department also spoke in open court. After the case was assigned to him, he monitored surveillance cameras in the area. The detective found footage of a homeless man fitting Gary Cushinberry’s description, pulling Jane Doe into a bush next to her car. The two were not in frame for the next 25 minutes, until video captured Jane Doe speeding away from the parking lot, back into Amplified, where she later reported the assault.“It’s like you imagine a fight or flight. And I didn’t really fight and I didn’t flight. I just froze,” Doe said. Cushinberry, who is already a convicted rapist in Indiana, returned to the frame, just two minutes later. “When he walks up toward the intersection, or the corner, he is adjusting his belt, he is adjusting his waist,” Detective Munoz said. The next day, Jane Doe provided information for a suspect sketch.Officers also took her to Palomar Hospital to run a rape kit. DNA Criminalist Adam Dutra of the San Diego Police Department Crime Lab tested the DNA swab taken from the front button and zipper of Jane Doe’s shorts.“There was strong support for the inclusion of Mr. Cushinberry as the 98% contributor,” Dutra said. Cushinberry’s past convictions include rape in 1995, sexual battery in 1997, and recently, felony robbery in San Diego.His next court appearance is on December 19th. 2407

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As of today, it is illegal to live in your car in the city of San Diego. This controversial law took effect right after yesterday night's City Council vote. Homeowners in many San Diego neighborhoods said it is about some regulation is enforced. But homeless advocates called it a human rights violation. 10News met with two "van-lifers," as they called themselves. One of them was 39-year-old Jason Thorwegen. He said he is a Southern California native, who has been homeless since childhood."I started being homeless at the age of 8 years old," Thorwegen said. He admitted, it has not been easy, and that he is not perfect. But he never thought he would be in trouble, while trying to stay out of trouble, inside his van. Tuesday night, San Diego City Council approved the updated the Vehicle Habitation Ordinance, after residents complained about health and safety. "People who live in my neighborhood are defecating and urinating on the street, I see it. and I live it," one lady said at the Council meeting Tuesday.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes restrictions on living in vehiclesStarting Wednesday, living in a vehicle is illegal on city streets between 9 pm and 6 am unless parked in a designated Safe Parking Zone. "It's kind of disheartening, to be honest, to see that it's not as comprehensive as it could have should have been," Teresa Smith said. Smith runs the non-profit organization, "Dreams For Change," which provides 60 safe parking spaces throughout the city. The city currently has 120 spaces, with plans to offer more this year. "Even though as much as they try to say it was not around criminalization, I do not see how it is not," Smith said.10News also spoke to "van-lifer," Maria Ennis. She plans to get the ACLU on her side, to fight that the untimely law, is a human rights violation. "If they are making more parking lots, why don't they make the parking lots first? And then try to make that law?" Ennis asked.Thorwegen said the new lots would not change his lifestyle."I have anxieties that prevent me from living inside," Thorwegen said. He said he has non-combat-related PTSD and other illnesses. That is why started "Van for a Plan."The Go-Fund-me campaign asks people to donate old vans. He then converts them to be provided to clean, homeless veterans. "We want them to do the work, and that way, they can earn the vans," Thrrwegen said. He is working on his second van now. But now with this new ordinance, he is worried his efforts will become mute."What didn't help was when people made it illegal for me to be. You know, illegal for me, to be," Thorwegen said.The city said officers would first have to be trained about the new ordinance before issuing tickets. But Smith anticipated people would likely find other ways to avoid the consequences."So one of the issues we suspect is going to start, is people will start moving right outside the city limits. So the surrounding communities will start seeing the impact of the city ordinance," Smith said. 3028
