CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic. It is unlikely they will be able to attend the Aztecs' three other games in 2020 at the 27,000-seat stadium, best known in the San Diego area as the home to the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-19.The game marks the start of Brady Hoke's second stint as San Diego State's coach. He succeeds Rocky Long, who retired on Jan. 8, then on Jan. 27 was hired as New Mexico's defensive coordinator on his 70th birthday.Hoke coached San Diego State to a 13-12 record in 2009 and 2010, including a 35-14 victory over Navy in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl, the Aztecs' first bowl game since 1998.Hoke then coached Michigan from 2011-14, getting fired in 2014 after the Wolverines were 7-6 and 5-7 in his final two seasons. They were 11-2 and 8- 5 in his first two.Hoke returned to San Diego State in 2019 as the defensive line coach. The Aztecs return seven starters on offense and eight on defense from a team that went 10-3 in 2019, including a 48-11 victory over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl.Redshirt sophomore quarterback Carson Baker is set to make his second career start for the Aztecs. CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Lee County mom kept her son home from school on Monday because she felt it was inappropriate for the school to allow children to have a water gun fight in the wake of recent school shootings.The mother, who did not want to be identified because she didn't want to identify her son, said during a time when students are put through active shooter training, encouraging students to shoot what she calls water guns at each other is inappropriate.The Lee County School District is calling them "squirt toys," and says they're not water guns."What is this? Put the fun back in the gun? I don't understand it. It completely contradicts everything they stand for," the mom said.She said her son came home from Mariner Middle School recently and told her he would need money for a water gun fight on field day."This is completely asinine. I don't understand. They're telling us it's necessary to teach them there's no tolerance for guns. You enter the property, it's a gun free zone. Yet they're saying here's a gun, point it at me, point it at your fellow student and pull the trigger," she said.She said she understands they're meant for fun.  "But who knows what's going on inside these kids heads now-a-days. How do you know they're not fantasizing about the adrenaline rush of what if this is real?" she said.She said given the timing of the Santa Fe school shooting and increased sensitivity in Florida after the Parkland shooting, this activity isn't appropriate."Any other day of the year, according to the Lee County School District code of conduct policy, there's no fake weaponry even allowed on school," she said. The Lee County School District spokesperson said they're not water guns, they're squirt toys or pool toys. He also said: "Field days are meant to be a reward for the students hard work during the school year. We encourage any parent who has concerns with certain school activities to contact their child's principal." Can you imagine a pile of trash twice the size of Texas? That's what's floating in the Pacific Ocean right now.A group started an ambitious project to clean it up.Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, has waited five years to see his idea put into action. That idea consists of a 2,000-foot long barrier, with a 10-foot skirt below that’ll help get plastic out of the ocean.“2,000 feet is a pretty big clean up system, and just imagining that the future one will probably be you know maybe twice as large,” says Slat.It's work starts at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch--an area between California and Hawaii--with a pile of trash three times the size of France.  “You go out there, it's all blue. The thing is you're all miles away from any human activity and you start to see like objects that you can see in your kitchen,” says Laurent Lebreton, lead oceanographer. “So, it's just very striking like you wouldn't expect.”The system will corral the plastic floating on the surface, so fish and other ocean life can swim underneath. Then, smaller boats take the plastic back to shore for recycling. The Ocean Cleanup says it can extract 50 percent of the plastic in the patch every five years.  “That's a huge goal,” says Dr. Mikki McColb-Kobza, with Ocean First Institute. “If they are able to do that, I think that is a really big dent into the problem.”Dr. McColb-Kobza says the system is meeting an unaddressed need.  “There really haven't been a lot of other projects trying to go out and bring trash bag to try and figure out a way to bring it back,” he says.  Still, some say the system creates a false sense of security, and more focus should be placed on keeping plastic out of the ocean to begin with.  But Dr. McColb-Kobza says the project is a great way to get that conversation started.  “Really the key is not only to clean up what is there, but it's to think about why you know do we live in this plastic throw a way society.”   1990
