DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- "When difficult things happen, artists really feel the need to give a voice to what's going on," described mother of two, Deana Lederman. Lederman always turned to paintbrushes and a canvas when things got tough. "I have been drawing and writing since I was really little."She turned her passion into profit when she became a published cartoonist, but she always had an eye for writing and books."I've always written stories and I've always wanted to get it out there, and this is kind of an interesting time to get this out there because there are a lot of families who are having a really hard time," Lederman described.She pivoted from human to something more serious and recently published a series of children's books about COVID-19."I have a friend who has two little boys in Brooklyn, New York and she shared photos of the rainbows in the windows. That seemed like a logical storyline for the silver lining and sense of connection we have during the fact we're all isolated." It inspired her first book titled 'Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story'. After that, came 'Masks'."It's about a mom who sews masks for essential workers and I think everyone's been thinking about that and seeing all the work everyone's been doing," Lederman said.Her book was recently published by TBR, a non-profit organization that supported multilingual children's books. DEL MAR (KGTV) - Beachgoers are asked to stay away from a section of shoreline near 8th Street in Del Mar because of a sewage spill Sunday.Del Mar city officials said a leak was reported around 11:30 this morning. Sewage was flowing out of a manhole near 8th Street, they said. A blockage in the sewer line caused about 4,200 gallons of sewage to seep out of the manhole and flow onto the beach. The blockage was fixed around 1 p.m., city officials said. People are asked to stay out of the water between 7th Street and 9th Street for the next 72 hours because of impacts to water quality. City officials will continue to test the water. 670

DEL MAR, CA (KGTV) -- From the starting line to the finish line, opening day to the final race of the season, the Del Mar racetrack prides itself on injury-free races. And with the Summer 2020 season having just wrapped up, the track was ranked as the safest racetrack in the country for the third straight year."It didn't come easily," says Del Mar Thoroughbred Club President Joe Harper. "A few years ago we just woke up to the fact that these horse injuries were climbing, and we had to figure out what was going on."So four years ago, they decided to make some changes. All in the hopes of making the sport safer for the horses, and the jockeys. And it all started with dissecting the track."We found the best guy in the world, the best dirt guy there is, and it was Dennis Moore. He took the track completely apart and told us there were a few problems. We knew it would cost a lot of money, but I said spend all you want."Joe says they also stepped up the evaluations on every racehorse. And for a summer racing season, that means close to 2,000."We go back through our databases, and find what this horses have been doing, where they have been, and how they have been training."The track has also increased the number of veterinarians at the track."In the morning during workouts we've hired more vets to come in and watch the horses. We also have veterinarians go in and look at the horses in the stalls, and the receiving barns. There are vets everywhere."This past season, they had to euthanize one horse injured in a race, as well as two other horses injured while training. "What we're really looking for is zero but compared to where we were, and compared to other tracks, for the last three years we've been the safest track in North America." 1767

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after someone vandalized a park in Del Mar. According to authorities, someone drove onto the grass at Shores Park and did donuts overnight Sunday. Due in part to recent rain, authorities say the incident left extensive damage. The park is used by students of The Winston School and by pet owners as an off-leash park. The City of Del Mar is working to fix the damage but it’s unclear how much the repairs will cost at this time. 522
