BALTIMORE — The University of Maryland, Baltimore has suspended an experiment they were conducting after reports indicate they were denying pain relief to animals they were operating on.  The university confessed they were forced to stop their experiment because they failed to comply with multiple federal regulations, according to the national watchdog group SAEN, or Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!, which monitors U.S. research facilities for illegal activity and animal abuse.While the details about the experiment are still limited, documents from UMB reveal the project was suspended because animals were repeatedly denied pain relief after surgeries, they were not given proper time to recover after surgeries, the staff did not euthanize them after they reached their endpoints and the staff did not properly keep records. In a letter to the University of Maryland Board of Regents, SAEN said animals were not given any pain relief during a procedure involving cardiac arrest, and instead of giving the animals a three- to seven-day recovery period, they were given up to 24 hours. It also said animals were inspected by veterinarians and one animal required euthanasia, but was kept alive. All of this was discovered during multiple separate lab inspections done by UMB research administration. The letter also says during those inspections, the lab was notified of the serious consequences of not providing pain relief to the animals, but still did not get the necessary medications by the time another inspection took place, even though a surgery was going on at the time of the second inspection. After another unannounced inspection, changes were still not made, so the experiment was suspended on October 25. Now, SAEN is urging for UMB to do further research of abuse, terminate the project and refund all of the project support, .9 million, to the federal government. "This failed experiment must be terminated immediately,” said Michael A. Budkie, a co-founder and executive director of SAEN.  "The idea that a principal investigator repeatedly violated their own protocol and denied pain relief to animals indicates a total disregard for proper scientific procedures and total contempt for the authority of UMB Research Administration." SAEN is also calling for the results of the research to not be published because protocol was not followed.  2477

BLACK FOREST, Colo. — A young buck gored a Black Forest woman Friday and now Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers have cited a neighbor for her illegal contact with the animal.CPW cited Tynette Housley, 73, with illegal possession of wildlife and illegally feeding wildlife after she told officers she took a days-old fawn into her home more than a year ago and raised it. They also issued a warning for possession of live wildlife without a license for keeping the animal in her home, garage, and property.CPW said the victim was walking her dog along a wooden path Friday morning when the 1.5-year-old buck attacked her. The victim told CPW she thought the deer wanted to be "snuggled" when it approached her. When she extended her hand to the deer, it lowered its antlers and jabbed her abdomen.The victim then grabbed the deer's antlers and they fell to the ground. It continued to gore her until she got to her feet, tried to run to a neighbor's home, and, eventually, her own garage. The deer continued to attack her until she ran between two cars in the garage to getaway.She was hospitalized for serious lacerations to the top of her head, left cheek and legs, but is expected to recover.A young buck approached an investigating CPW officer near the victim's home with blood on its antlers acting aggressively and the officer euthanized the deer.“This buck showed no fear of the woman and her dog. And when our officer responded to the scene, it approached within a few feet," said Frank McGee, area wildlife manager for the Pikes Peak region. "This tells me the deer was very comfortable around people. Dangerously comfortable. It viewed humans as a source of food.”According to CPW, human conflict with wildlife is increasing throughout Colorado, particularly in Front Range communities where human populations are expanding. McGee is concerned similar attacks will happen if people don't take state laws forbidding feeding wildlife seriously.“We had a young boy attacked in Colorado Springs in June. And we had a 72-year-old woman attacked and seriously injured in Black Forest in 2017. All three are lucky the results weren’t much worse,” McGee said.Housley could face up to ,098.50 in fines and surcharges from the two misdemeanors.The deer was taken to a lab to test it for rabies and other diseases. Its stomach contents confirmed humans were feeding the deer. The incident remains under investigation.“We can’t say it enough: Wild animals are not pets,” McGee said. “Feeding deer habituates them to humans. They lose their fear of humans and that leads to these outcomes that are tragic for both wildlife and people. BOSTON (AP) — A California marketing executive and author was sentenced Wednesday to three weeks in prison for paying ,000 to cheat on her son's college entrance exam.Jane Buckingham, 51, was sentenced in Boston's federal court after pleading guilty in May to a single count of fraud and conspiracy. She is the 11th parent to be sentenced in a college admissions bribery scheme that ensnared dozens of wealthy parents.The Los Angeles resident admitted to paying ,000 to a sham charity operated by admissions consultant William "Rick" Singer , who then bribed a test proctor to take the ACT exam on behalf of her son at a Houston, Texas, testing site in 2018. Singer has pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme.Buckingham gave her son a practice test at home and led him to believe he was taking the real test on his own, authorities said. Her lawyers said the measure was intended to protect him from learning about the scheme.It landed her son a 35 out of 36 on the ACT, placing him in the 99th percentile nationally. Buckingham aimed to get her son into the University of Southern California, prosecutors said. It's unclear whether he enrolled at the school.Prosecutors recommended six months in prison and a ,000 fine, saying Buckingham was "more deeply engaged in the mechanics of the fraud than many of the other parents" in the case.
