SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved comic book is making a comeback, 13 years after disappearing off the shelves.San Diego artist Dennis Caco created Max Boost! in 1998, the original Import Tuner racing comic. "I just love creation. Creation has always been my thing. I love being very creative, making things from something to nothing," said Caco. RELATED: 'Gramma in a Box' using technology to connect generationsThe story line was rooted in Caco's own experience with 90s tuner culture when young guys tuned import cars like Hondas. "We were ridiculed and made fun of, but the performance was there!" says Caco. Little did he know in 1998, the something he created then, would touch thousands of people."Max Boost! started off as a little comic strip inside Import Tuner magazine, and eventually ballooned to about one million readers per month in its heyday," said Caco.RELATED: Vietnam veteran's legacy showcased in new Carlsbad art exhibitMax Boost is the story's hero. "Max Boost, just like everyone in life, we're always the underdog, our dreams are big and menacing, and Max Boost is inspiring that story of overcoming all odds."Caco explains that Max Boost was on its way to becoming a Saturday cartoon show, but the deal fell through. "We worked really hard to get the deal resurrected, and we couldn't, and that was really depressing."RELATED: Act of kindness creates unlikely friendship between San Diego boy and lowrider ownerHe put his pencil down for 13 years, leaving fans in the dark, until now.Through an online fundraiser campaign, Caco is releasing collector's editions of the series. His original goal of ,320 is now over ,000."We really don't know the effect we make, but now I see and know I don't want to quit!" said Caco. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group called "Pillars of the Community" is working to make sure people inside San Diego county jails are registered and able to vote. The non-profit based out of southeast San Diego hires inmates to work from the inside. Their efforts were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year but they're still hiring and trying to gather information to support their request to have polling places put inside the jails. 443

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request. The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. On the show, she took and passed a polygraph test.RELATED: 40-year-old San Diego cold case solved with help of genealogical databaseThis week, an emotional scene unfolded for her and other family as Salisbury police announced the case was solved. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. Police say he was working at a Frito Lay plant near the home and had no connection to the family.RELATED: Suspect in 1986 Escondido cold case homicide arrested“Thirty-five years is a long time and we’re just as happy as we could possibly be," Laird said. “I know that we’ll never get all of the answers that we want, but at least we have the answers that we need.”10news uncovered some answers about his criminal resume during his time in San Diego. Records show he moved to the area two years after the murder. The 43-year-old was arrested and charged in 1986, accused of robbing two men, one at knife point. According to court documents, he pleaded guilty and received a 3-year sentence. 1779
