BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will pay a state visit to the United States from Jan. 18 to 21 at the invitation of U.S. President Barack Obama, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei announced Friday.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed Monday that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government will wage the fight against corruption with greater determination and more forceful measures as the situation remains "grave".Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-graft body, Hu said all work should be done with the fundamental interests of the majority of the people as the core concern.Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said problems that seriously violated the public interest and sparked the most public complaints should be addressed to ensure social justice.He said efforts were needed to strengthen ties between the Party and the people and to enable the people to play a more active role in fighting corruption.Hu pledged to "combat graft strictly and punish corrupt officials severely" so as to win trust from the people.Hu admitted that prominent problems remained in the fight against corruption and efforts to build a clean government, and warned of a "grave situation and arduous tasks."He called for enhanced supervision and monitoring of the implementation of major central government and Party policies and measures and the promotion of a corruption-free work style among officials.He called for reinforced efforts to build a system to prevent and punish corruption."More efforts should be made to investigate graft in key industries and key posts," he said, stressing the supervision of procedures concerning the promotion of local officials to prevent abuse of power or other corrupt conduct.Figures from the CCDI show 146,517 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations last year, including 5,098 leaders at the county head level or above and 804 officials who were referred for prosecution.Discipline inspection bodies received almost 1.43 million petitions and tip-offs last year and recovered 8.97 billion yuan (1.35 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses for the state."All comrades in the Party must serve the people with all their hearts and use their power to seek benefits for them. Only by doing so can our work earn the most comprehensive and solid foundation among the people and stand the tests of storms and risks," Hu said.Hu said people-oriented education was needed to guide officials to "willingly stand beside the people, be emotionally close to the people and reply on the people in carrying out their duties."Hu called for the building of a scientific, democratic and lawful decision-making system that would take the people's benefits and ideas fully into account.Hu called for unsparing efforts to promote an efficient and legal work style and solve obvious problems concerning people's lives in order to ensure their economic, political, cultural and social rights.While urging grassroots officials to expand their knowledge and expertise through intensified education, Hu encouraged their superiors to fully understand the difficulties of grassroots work and to take good care of grassroots officials.Hu called on officials from discipline inspection departments at all levels to set an example and to initiate the people-oriented spirit in their work and fulfil their responsibilities to a higher standard.He called for improvements in the anti-corruption system in accordance with an amended anti-corruption regulation released last month.One of the latest CPC moves to battle corruption, the amended regulation adds articles detailing punishments for corrupt officials and sets out penalties for corrupt Party officials who have left their posts or retired.Along with 118 CCDI members, senior Chinese leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Zhou Yongkang, attended the meeting, which was presided over by He Guoqiang, head of the CPC's anti-graft agency.

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. He hopes the ministers can play an active role in promoting the progress of the conference.A 70-strong-member delegation of the Chinese government, headed by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, is cooperating with other parties to seek a solution to global warming in Cancun.The Cancun talks, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, are aimed at finding solutions to global climate change. GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- It is time for the Doha Development Round to begin to center around the Chair-led multilateral process and to come up with a revised text, Sun Zhenyu, the Chinese ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), said on Tuesday at a WTO Trade Negotiation Committee meeting."Time is not with us," Sun said, stressing the need to "plan wisely" in the year ahead to seize the window of opportunity in 2011, which is recognized by both G20 and APEC leaders in early November.Sun commended progress generated from the "Cocktail Approach," which is made up of small-group informal discussions and brainstorming among the ambassadors, carried out throughout the last few months.The brainstorming "paves way for possible progress in quite a few areas such as development, rules and dispute settlement," the Chinese ambassador said."But after all, the brainstorming is not and could not replace negotiating sessions," he added, calling for intensified engagements to deliver the revised texts at the earliest time."One of the major achievements of the G20 Summit in Seoul is that leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to the DDA and directed us as negotiators to engage in across-the-board negotiations to promptly bring the Doha Development Round to a conclusion," the Chinese ambassador said."Across-the-board trade-offs could have a better chance when we have the texts on the table," Sun noted.He also reiterated the stance on honoring the leaders' instructions through "respecting the mandate" and "building on the progress already achieved," in order to achieve a balanced and ambitious outcome.In his speech, Sun gave priority to development as the top outcome of the Doha Round."Above everything, it has to be development-oriented," he said, giving a clear message that China is in favor of addressing the concerns of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Vulnerable Economies (SVEs) as a priority.

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- On the last trading day of 2010, the Chinese currency, the yuan, strengthened to a record high for a second consecutive day, at 6.6227 per U.S. dollar, after 11 consecutive days of gains.The central parity rate of the currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set two basis points stronger than Thursday's 6.6229, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading system.China's central bank announced on June 19 it would further reform the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility.
