BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao inspected the southern province of Hainan before attending the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) opening on Saturday.     The forum, April 11-13, is a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world. Boao has been the permanent venue of the annual regional economic forum since 2001.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, discussed reform and development issues with local officials and visited with a public made up of various ethnic groups during the inspection tour that started on Monday.     The island province marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Hainan special economic zone (SEZ) later this month. Hu visited an exhibition marking the anniversary at the provincial museum.     "Over the past two decades, Hainan's economic and social development has made a remarkable progress. The appearance of cities and villages has undergone profound changes. Practice shows the policy of setting up SEZ in Hainan is completely correct," said the president. The others are Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Xiamen, all in southern China.     Hu showed his respect for the island's model workers, farmers, teachers and police who had made great contribution to Hainan's development. "You have done extraordinarily at ordinary positions," Hu told them.     The president also revisited the state-level Yangpu Economic Zone in the northwest of the island. Twelve years before, he had been to the zone.     Hu was very happy to learn that last year Yangpu's economy increased by 60 percent and its import and export value was up by 213 percent.     The president said he hoped Hainan to deepen reform, further implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and play a leading role in reform and opening up.     He later inspected a Sinopec oil refining company in Hainan and visited a 300,000-ton crude oil dock.     Leaving the oil-handling terminal, Hu went to the Yangpu Harbor, which boasted the best natural conditions among all deep water ports of the island. The throughput of the harbor, launched in 1990, reached 4.27 million tons in 2007.     Hu encouraged officials and workers to seize the regional economic cooperation opportunity. SANAA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that China and Yemen share a big potential and many favorable conditions for expanding the scale of investment and cooperation.     Xi made the remarks in a speech at the opening ceremony of the China-Yemen Bilateral Investment Seminar, which attracted some 300 Chinese and Yemeni officials and entrepreneurs, including Yemeni Prime Minister Ali Muhammad al-Mujawar.     Xi said it is the natural requisite of economic development for the two countries to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and create common prosperity.     Noting that Yemen has geographical advantages and rich reserves of natural resources, he expressed the hope that companies of the two countries could proceed from traditional friendship to mutual understanding and cooperation.     Xi said the companies of the two countries should stick to mutually beneficial and win-win practices so as to promote common development. LHASA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed in a strong earthquake that jolted a county near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday, the rescue headquarters confirmed early Tuesday morning.     The previous "at least 30" death toll was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources and needs further check.     Rescuers arrived at Yangyi Village, the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County, late Monday night after repairing the road once paralyzed in the 6.6-magnitude tremor.     At least 147 houses in Yangyi and villages in a neighboring county collapsed. Rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, and 11 people were seriously injured while eight others received light injuries, Hao Peng, deputy chairman of the autonomous regional government and head of the rescue command, told Xinhua.     More than 600 soldiers, police officers, firefighters, traffic, medical and geological experts were rushing to the quake zone.     Food, drinking water, tents and other materials had been transported to the area. Rescue operation was underway. The injured were being sent to local hospitals.     An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung,82 km from Lhasa, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The epicenter was at 29.8 degrees north and 90.3 degrees east.     Tremors were felt in Lhasa, but no major damages were found in buildings or historical sites there, including the famed Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple.     "We examined every palace and building right after the quake and no damages were found," said Jamba Gesang, head of the management department of the Potala Palace. Then everything returned to normal," Xinhua reporter Xue Wenxian said.     Classes ended early in some schools in Lhasa.     The national seismological network recorded another earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale in the county at 8:10 p.m. Monday. The regional earthquake monitoring network said it had observed 15 aftershocks.     An emergency response scheme was launched across the region soon after the quake broke out. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles.
