A genetic analysis of COVID-19 patients suggests that blood type might influence whether someone develops severe disease.Scientists who compared the genes of thousands of patients in Europe found that those who had Type A blood were more likely to have severe disease while those with Type O were less likely.Wednesday’s report in the New England Journal of Medicine does not prove a blood type connection, but it does confirm a previous report from China of such a link.“Most of us discounted it because it was a very crude study,” Dr. Parameswar Hari, a blood specialist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said of the report from China. With the new work, “now I believe it,” he said. “It could be very important.”Other scientists urged caution. The evidence of a role for blood type is “tentative ... it isn’t enough of a signal to be sure,” said Dr. Eric Topol, head of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in San Diego. The study, involving scientists in Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany and other countries, compared about 2,000 patients with severe COVID-19 to several thousand other people who were healthy or who had only mild or no symptoms. Researchers tied variations in six genes to the likelihood of severe disease, including some that could have a role in how vulnerable people are to the virus. They also tied blood groups to possible risk. Most genetic studies like this are much larger, so it would be important to see if other scientists can look at other groups of patients to see if they find the same links, Topol said. Many researchers have been hunting for clues as to why some people infected with the coronavirus get very ill and others, less so. Being older or male seems to increase risk, and scientists have been looking at genes as another possible “host factor” that influences disease severity. There are four main blood types — A, B, AB and O — and “it’s determined by proteins on the surface of your red blood cells,” said Dr. Mary Horowitz, scientific chief at the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.People with Type O are better able to recognize certain proteins as foreign, and that may extend to proteins on virus surfaces, Hari explained.During the SARS outbreak, which was caused by a genetic cousin of the coronavirus causing the current pandemic, “it was noted that people with O blood type were less likely to get severe disease,” he said.Blood type also has been tied to susceptibility to some other infectious diseases, including cholera, recurrent urinary tract infections from E. coli, and a bug called H. pylori that can cause ulcers and stomach cancer, said Dr. David Valle, director of the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.Bottom line: “It’s a provocative study. It’s in my view well worth publishing and getting out there,” but it needs verification in more patients, Valle said.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. A Dallas police officer died Wednesday morning, a day after he and a colleague were shot at a Home Depot, police said.Officer Rogelio Santander, a three-year police veteran, passed away at 8:11 a.m. of his injuries."We ask that you please continue to pray for Officer Santander's family and our department as we all try to cope with this tragic loss," police said on the department blog.Officer Crystal Almeida and loss prevention officer Scott Painter also were shot in the Tuesday incident. They remain in critical condition, but are improving."Prayers for their recovery are still appreciated," police said. "Thank you to our community and everyone at Presbyterian Hospital for your love and support during this time."The suspect, Armando Juarez, 29, was captured after a car chase that started in southeastern Dallas and ended in the northeastern area of the city.Mayor Mike Rawlings thanked police officers from Dallas and other agencies for their efforts in searching for the gunman."Incredible police work," he said on Twitter. "It sobers us to realize what our officers walk into day in and day out and how quickly they can become victims."Police said Juarez was to be charged with at least two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant and two previous felony theft warrants. Additional charges may be added, police said.Bond for Juarez has been set at million, according to jail records. The incident began Tuesday afternoon after an off-duty officer at the Home Depot called to request backup officers for an arrest. It's unclear how the shooting unfolded but authorities began looking for the gunman after he fled in a white pickup truck, police said. The officers who responded to the call were wounded, police said.Nearly two years ago, five Dallas officers were killed and seven others wounded when a military veteran who had served in Afghanistan fired on them. That shooter, Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite, Texas, was killed after a lengthy standoff with police.  2006

A letter that's being circulated on Capitol Hill reveals multiple incoming freshmen -- who were largely noncommittal on the House speaker race during their campaigns --- will in fact support Nancy Pelosi. The letter, obtained by CNN, is still being circulated and so far includes 61 signatures from women incumbents and members-elect. It comes as Pelosi is shoring up support from the progressive base this week with endorsements from large and powerful groups, as well as prominent progressives in Congress — a move that will put pressure on wayward Democrats to back her bid.MoveOn, Indivisible and Tax March were among the progressive groups that threw their support behind Pelosi on Thursday and Friday, soon after she met with the Congressional Progressive Caucus. All told, 34 outside groups have backed the California Democrat. Also this week, a group of 100 LGBTQ advocates and leaders endorsed Pelosi in a letter.Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a co-chair of the progressive caucus along with Rep. Mark Pocan, earlier this week would not say whom she's supporting, but she is listed on the women's letter in support of Pelosi. Also on the letter are members-elect like Angie Craig of Minnesota, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Dr. Kim Schrier of Washington state, Lori Trahan of Massachusetts, and Jennifer Wexton of Virginia.Below are all the freshmen on the list: 1388

A drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and designed to lower glucose levels is being recalled because the manufacturer found it contained high levels of a cancer-causing agent.Marksans Pharma Limited is recalling metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets because levels of NDMA were higher than the acceptable daily intake limit, according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration. The release says the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall at this time.NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen, a substance that could cause cancer, based on results from laboratory tests. It’s a known environmental contaminant “found in water and foods, including meats, dairy products and vegetables,” according to the FDA.”These tablets are used in addition to diet and exercise to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The pills were distributed nationally to wholesalers and pharmacies.Customers with questions about the recall or have recalled medications, return to the place of purchase. The company says patients should talk to their doctors before they stop taking metformin and should continue taking it while they get a replacement.Head to the FDA’s website for a complete list of recalled lot numbers. 1302
