MOSCOW (AP) — Russia is boasting that it’s about to be the first country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine, with mass vaccinations planned as early as October using shots that are yet to complete clinical trials. But scientists worldwide are sounding the alarm that the headlong rush could backfire and point to ethical issues that undermine confidence in the Russian studies. Moscow sees a Sputnik-like propaganda victory, recalling the Soviet Union’s launch of the world’s first satellite in 1957. But the experimental COVID-19 shots began first-in-human testing on a few dozen people less than two months ago, and there’s no published scientific evidence yet backing Russia’s late entry to the global vaccine race, much less explaining why it should be considered a front-runner.“I’m worried that Russia is cutting corners so that the vaccine that will come out may be not just ineffective, but also unsafe,” said Lawrence Gostin, a global public health law expert at Georgetown University. “It doesn’t work that way. ... Trials come first. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — A National City crematorium owner denied Friday that human remains were released into the air during a furnace emergency at the facility.National City firefighters responded to a call Thursday afternoon at the Cortez Family Crematorium, located about 10 minutes south of San Diego.A furnace door was open while the system was operating, triggering the building’s heat detectors. A plume of smoke rose from the building and drifted east.A National City Fire captain and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District indicated human remains were released into the air along with chemicals, the crematorium owner disputes the information.Angela Cortez of the Cortez Family Crematorium says the human remains were covered with a cardboard box at the time of the emergency. The box caught fire due to ambient heat in the furnace and the remains were not burned, she said. Firefighters reset the system, which shut the door and the cremation resumed.The San Diego Air Pollution Control District said there was no public health risk from the smoke.The California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau says it is investigating the situation.Cortez Family Crematorium has been operating since 2014 and has no record of violations, state officials said.  1290

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A Wisconsin man is accused of driving across Milwaukee with the body of a man who had fatally overdosed in the passenger seat for 13 hours straight.The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it has arrested the 34-year-old man in connection to the death of the victim, whose lifeless body was later found in the Allenton Marsh.The sheriff’s office says the suspect, whom they did not name, was last seen with the victim, 30-year-old Stephen Lombard, in the Village of Jackson on July 27.A missing persons investigation was launched with the assistance of the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigations.A several-month-long investigation eventually concluded that on the night of July 27, Lombard and the suspect were in Milwaukee using illegal narcotics.Investigators believe that at some time, Lombard stopped breathing while inside the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect did not seek medical aid, authorities say, and Lombard died from a probable drug overdose.The suspect then drove around Milwaukee with Lombard's body still in the passenger seat for the next 13 hours. During that time, the suspect used the victim's debit card at several locations, authorities say.Investigators believe the suspect then discarded Lombard’s body on July 28 in the Allenton Marsh, off CTH W, north of CTH S in the Town of Addison.That's where authorities found a body they believe to be Lombard's.DNA analysis will be required for positive identification. An autopsy was completed and the results are pending, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office says.“It is unconscionable to think that someone would have such wanton disregard for human life to not seek medical attention for someone in need," said Washington County Sheriff Martin Schulteis in a statement."It shocks the conscience to think that they would then drive around with the body for thirteen hours while emptying the victim’s bank account and eventually discarding the body like a piece of trash," he said. 1995

NAPLES, Fla. - Two people were killed after falling 70 feet when an elevator collapsed in Naples, Florida on Wednesday. Two construction workers were standing on a lift at Club Brittany of Park Shore, the Naples Fire Department said. They working on an outside elevator when the lift the construction workers were on collapsed and dropped 70 feet, they said. It has been confirmed both workers are dead. The elevator is attached to the side of the building and is typically used during renovations."This would be used after the building is completed, probably windows, railings, repairs and stucco," said David Mola, a contractor who lives near the accident.Mola says accidents involving these elevators are extremely rare.  Construction on condominiums along Gulfshore Boulevard have ramped up since season has ended."They're usually restricted, they usually have 6 months from now to late October to finish," said Mola.Officials from OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration arrived at the scene to investigate.The identity of the victims have not been released. 1107
