Experts and policy makers from both sides of the border shared their thoughts on what the new presidency will mean to the future of the relationship between the United States and Mexico."So much of what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico and so much of what happens in the United States happens along the U.S-Mexico border," said USD Professor David Shirk, who helped organize Thursday's forum.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will become the first person to lead Mexico from the political left in several decades after a landslide victory in July elections. Nobody wants a repeat of the kind of incident that you had a few days ago at the border," Wayne said, referring to the clashes between Central American migrants and Border Patrol agents near the San Ysidro border crossing Sunday.Wayne and Shirk share some optimism that Mexico's new administration will be able to find common ground with President Trump, despite their differences on policy. Wayne points out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be traveling to Mexico the day after Lopez Obrador's inauguration. Shirk says the two presidents have already formed a bond based on similar styles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There’s now a bombshell update about the standoff from earlier this summer at a condo complex near SDSU.Two officers were shot and dozens of neighbors were terrorized. 10News Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner has confirmed that officers wanted to search the suspect’s home for weapons days before the shooting.However, the Office of the San Diego County District Attorney did not attempt to get a search warrant. It was a horrifying night that ended with one person dead and two San Diego Police officers wounded by gunfire. Suspect Joseph Darwish died in the massive standoff.He had numerous hand guns and rifles, according to police. In the days after the shooting, 10News was tipped off by a law enforcement source that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had wanted to search Darwish's home because they thought he had a weapon and was buying parts to make more weapons.Darwish wasn't supposed to own any weapons because of his criminal history. Our source says the FBI asked the District Attorney's Office to sign off on having a judge issue a search warrant, but the DA’s Office did not do so.For the past 7 weeks, 10News has been trying to confirm this with the DA’s Office.After our 10News attorneys got involved, the DA’s Office sent us a letter reading in part, “On June 13, 2018, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office received a request by law enforcement to review a draft of an affidavit in support of a search warrant to conduct a search of Mr. Darwish's person, property and residence. The District Attorney's Office determined that the warrant was legally deficient and so advised law enforcement.”June 13th was 10 days before the big shooting. 10News asked law enforcement expert and former police officer Kevin LaChapelle what "legally deficient" means. “It means that the District Attorney's Office felt that there was insufficient evidence or insufficient information that a judge would not grant a search warrant,” he explained.10News asked the DA’s Office why it turned down the FBI’s request to do a search warrant, but the DA’s Office will not answer that question, stating it's "exempt from disclosure".LaChapelle said this may have been a lesson learned the hard way, for the DA’s Office. He explained that the DA’s Office may reevaluate when it’s appropriate to seek a warrant. “It may help them start saying [a warrant] didn't meet [certain] criteria but it met this.It didn't meet a [level] 10 but it was at like a 7 and gosh, maybe [the DA’s Office needs] to start looking at this more so we can prevent these kinds of things,” he added. The FBI declined to comment about Monday’s story. San Diego Police have taken the lead on investigating the shootout. The two-story home and store addition was added in 1857 by Thomas Whaley. It was the first two-story brick edifice in San Diego and built using bricks made in Whaley's brickyard.The house operated as one of the first stores in the Old Town area and at one time was Whaley's home, a courtroom, a general store, and a theater simultaneously.While the store served the community in multiple ways during the 1800s, it seems its residents of one of the most haunted homes in America have stayed behind to watch over the grounds.During tours, museum guides will explore the stories of Whaley; his wife, Anna; their children, Violet and Tommie; and "Yankee" Jim Robinson — all of whom are believed to still be at the home in some form."Yankee Jim" was hanged on the grounds in 1852. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service unveiled its newest forever stamp Wednesday, honoring pioneering astronaut and UC San Diego professor Sally Ride.The ceremony, held at the UCSD campus, featured several of Ride's family and friends, including her life and business parter, Tam O'Shaughnessy, astronaut and Director of the Johnson Space Center Ellen Ochoa, and tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King.RELATED: First American woman in space to be honored with the Sally Ride Forever Stamp"It's amazing the impact and the long-lasting impact that Sally Ride's going to have," King told 10News. "And the stamp, this forever stamp, will be a big help."O'Shaughnessy revealed to 10News that Ride was a stamp collector, herself. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo welcomed a rare bear cub to the mix last week.Zoo officials say an Andean bear cub was born to mom Alba and dad (or, sire) Turbo on Jan. 8 in the early morning hours. “We are overjoyed about the birth of Alba’s first cub,” said Chris Hamlin, animal care manager at San Diego Zoo. “Alba is showing all the appropriate behaviors of a good mother, being very attentive to her newborn. Giving the bears their space is critically important, as Andean bear cubs have an extremely high mortality rate in their first month, so care takers are being watchful but cautiously optimistic.
