NEW YORK -- Lori Gaeta gets a cup of coffee every day at a cafe on Lexington Avenue in New York City.Last week, she got a cup coffee and started a conversation with a homeless man that changed both of their lives.Gaeta says she met the homeless man, named William, on 61st Street. It was a conservation she couldn't get out of her mind.“He was paralyzed in a broken down wheelchair. I just felt he could use a blessing,” said Gaeta. All she knew about him is he is 61 years old and his name is William, he became paralyzed and is now homeless. She noticed his wheelchair was being held together with duct tape and was falling apart. She asked him if it was alright for her to get him a new chair.Gaeta sprung into action and started an online quest asking for help posting on a site called Nextdoor. Generous New Yorkers immediately came forward offering used chairs. Then a total stranger, named Elizabeth Menegan, offered to buy William a new chair, spending over 0.“You know that saying it takes a village to raise a child? Well, this took an entire neighborhood to bless this man. He has no idea he had a brand new chair coming to him,” said Gaeta.William says he is grateful for the generosity of so many strangers.“I don’t know her but I give her respect,” said William.Gaeta says this story is more than getting William a wheelchair, she hopes that she can help William find a home. This story was originally published by Monica Morales at WPIX. 1459

NOGALES, Mexico — Eighteen-year-old Joshua escaped violence in Guatemala with his father two months ago and has ended up just steps away from the U.S.-Mexico border.Saying that gangs control almost all of Guatemala, he says they will likely request asylum in the United States. The Kino Border Initiative, headquartered in Nogales, Arizona, helps provide for those fleeing danger who end up like Joshua: far from home and uncertain about the future."A lot of people are fleeing violence in the northern part of Central America and parts of southern Mexico," said Fr. Sean Carroll. "That reality is not changing."Immigration figures show that before 2013, only one in 100 asylum seekers was able to convince authorities they faced a credible fear of violence in their home country, a crucial step toward qualifying for asylum. Now, one out of every ten applicants is able to meet that standard. The asylum process has been under intense political scrutiny as thousands of people have organized into large groups and moved to seek a better life in the United States. The caravans have drawn increasing criticism from President Trump and others in the White House, who have looked for ways to thwart the migrants' ability to enter the U.S. or request asylum. For Joshua, he says he has one request for immigration officials: do him the favor of saving his life. 1386

NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Griffin is stepping down after 12 years as MSNBC president, the first major post-election change in the news industry.NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde says Rashida Jones will replace Griffin.Jones, who is currently the head of breaking news at NBC and recently directed the network's coverage of the 2020 election, has been with NBC News for the past seven years. She is the first Black executive to lead a cable news network, and Conde has said increasing diversity is one of his top goals."Rashida is the right person to lead MSNBC forward into a new era," said Conde in a press release. "She's an exceptional leader with an outstanding track record, laser-like focus, and grace under pressure."According to the press release, Jones will take over on Feb. 1.Conde says Griffin has left MSNBC in the best shape it has ever been."Six straight record years. Each one is better than the last. An extraordinary roster of anchors, journalists, producers, contributors, and many more who each day create smart, in-depth news, analysis, and perspective and do it in a way that is distinctive in the cable news environment – with humanity that pops through the screen," Conde said in the news release.News networks are now wondering if they can keep up the same public interest level without President Donald Trump. 1349

New video appears to show workers for Caltrans handing out campaign materials defending the state's recent gas tax increase while on the job. The video, shot Tuesday, was released by the Yes on 6 campaign, which is pushing to repeal the recent 12-cent-per-gallon hike on the November ballot. The video shows Yes on 6 campaign manager Matt Stockton in the drivers seat of a car. He is apparently stopped at a Caltrans contractor's site along the 78 near Ramona. The video shows a man in a hard hat approaching the window, handing Stockton what appears to be a No on 6 campaign flier defending the gas-tax increase.Stockton in the video asks the man if he is with Caltrans, and the man answers that yes, his crew is working with Caltrans. Other images released by the campaign appear to show the workers were with Pico Rivera-based Manhole Adjusting Inc., and that a Caltrans supervisor was on site. "The misuse, the abuse of taxpayer funds being used in a political campaign, it is shameful, it is outrageous, and it needs to stop right now," said Carl DeMaio, who is chair of the Yes on 6 campaign. Caltrans, a state agency, said in a statement that it is looking into the matter, and has contacted its contractors to say it does not condone political advocacy on project sites. The No on 6 campaign, fighting to keep the gas tax increase, says it was unaware of the incident and that it denounces any inappropriate use of public resources or venues for campaign purposes."The No on 6 campaign very carefully follows all rules prohibiting the use of public resources for campaigning and often reinforces those rules to anyone involved with the campaign," the campaign said in a statement. Calls to the on-site Caltrans supervisor and Manhole Adjusting Inc were not immediately returned."If this is happening on more than one occasion, it's egregious," said Seth Kaplowitz, a finance lecturer at San Diego State University. "It's egregious because they know they're not supposed to be doing it."Last year, Gov. Jerry Brown and the state legislature raised the gas tax by 12 cents-per-gallon with future increases planned. Already, the state says more than 0 million have poured into San Diego to fix county roads and highways. The measure to repeal the tax increase will be on the November ballot.  2378

NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation's largest beauty chain has a deal to place shops in more than 100 Target stores by mid-2021.Ulta Beauty and Target said Tuesday that the shops will be located next to Target's existing beauty sections. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The partnership comes as the coronavirus pandemic has upended shopping habits. Customers are increasingly focused on one-stop shopping experiences as a way to minimize exposure to COVID-19.But the deal could hurt department stores like Macy's, which had already seen their share of their beauty business eroded even before the pandemic. 620
